Spring Cleaning & Organization Tips

spring cleaning and organization tips, Spring Cleaning, Spring Cleaning Tips, A Guide to Spring Cleaning

I usually give our apartment a pretty good cleaning to prepare for the Lunar New Year but it's when Spring rolls around that I really get to the deep cleaning and organizing. With this also comes the purging which I find so liberating and so necessary. We have decently sized closets and our apartment isn't actually cramped but somehow clutter still manages to build up. I've always been good about having a place for everything but now I'm also trying to be more mindful of what I bring in and have routines for regularly disposing of things. So far I've tackled the pantry, refrigerator, linen closet and my beauty stash. I'm in the process of cleaning my closet now and this always feels like a real process even though I do it twice a year. As I was cleaning my computer I found a number of helpful links to cleaning/organizing tips I had bookmarked and thought I'd share them here.

Do you Spring clean? How do you conquer clutter?

Looking at my room, I definitely need to clean. However, it's sometimes difficult to get rid of clutter at home because my mom will bring everything back into the house that I'm trying to donate. I've gotten around it by doing it when she's not home, though ^^

Wow, you are soo busy and thorough. We need to take a few tips from you - when we moved house, we had so much crap that had just built up over the years we were completely overwhelmed and had to take multiple trips to the rubbish dump.

You are so right about Lost. I watched the whole series too and was so disappointed by the ending. Like, they were all just dead to begin with? It absolutely made no sense and I wasn't surprised because they had dragged it out so long. I'm sure the writers didn't even know what they were writing about. Gossip Girl was another let down. It was trashy, as you say (though not like some British TV shows I know), and teensy, but the first few seasons were gripping and interesting. That one went down the pan and had probably an even more disappointing ending than Lost. Seriously, Dan? It just made no sense and you could tell the writers had just had to pick someone out of the air and somehow try and make it work to round off the show. I watch White Collar too! I can't believe I've found another White Collar fan! Rosemary x

Cleaning is such a never ending and overwhelming task. Beginning of this year I started in the study room and threw out a bunch of stuff. I think it is important to have storage spaces/boxes/shelves or something for your stuff or else they are all over the place. I love clear storage because it is easier to locate and see where everything is (I use that in the pantry too). And most importantly but very difficult to do, trying to keep up/maintain and not wait too long for clutter to form again. I hate filing most.

Oh wow! Thanks for this list, Rowena. I must admit our house needs organizing and decluttering badly, so I'll try to do some cleaning, at least before the summer....sigh....

i just went through my closet again a few weeks ago. i think we're good with the rest of the house but did a cleaning routine and it felt so good to get down on my knees and get the dust out at certain nooks and crannies around the apartment!

Christina @ Happy or Else said...

I am a HUGE believer in this statement! LOVE IT! I get rid of things ALL the time. We are quickly accumulating a lot of baby gifts and I'm starting to get overwhelmed by them! I'm open to borrowing things from people and sharing what I have with others all the time. I give so much of my stuff away to friends or Goodwill too. When I have something kind of expensive, I sell it on eBay! I clicked on the clean your computer list b/c I thought it might be a methodical way to keep your computer files organized (it was for actual cleaning LOL-which I could use too). I totally need to do that! My computer gets cluttered too!

Great quote and this is certainly something I am trying to achieve. Like you we have been having a clear out, reorganising and we are now having rooms redecorated. With an empty room it's a good opportunity to think carefully about what to put back! I shall have a look at some of those links which sound helpful.

Great list of links! I try to do a good, thorough cleaning of my closets at least twice a year (once when I switch out my cold weather clothes, and then again when I switch out my warm weather clothes). For me, my closet and drawers can easily become clutter because of all of the clothes that I keep even though I don't wear them anymore, or the things I keep saying I will get rid of but never actually do.

downsizing and purging are always good but it seems to come more natural in spring when everything is off to a fresh start...

Dear Rowena, I live by that quote! Otherwise I would literally sink among gibberish (my lovely daughter collects everything, I mean pieces of paper and shiny cristals coming out of my shirts!!). Now going to cuddle her to sleep :-)

You're my hero Rowena! I do major cleaning twice a year: Spring and Autumn. Each year, it gets better and better. I don't like a lot of stuff. I don't like to see a lot of stuff. I keep things to a minimum. I already purged my closet. I was selling a couple of things and whatever doesn't sell is going to Salvation Army. I need to give my kitchen a really good cleaning and do some dusting (ceiling fans kind of dusting). You're doing a great job.

I just had a credit on a Groupon, so I used it to have two cleaning ladies come and deep clean all my bathrooms. What a luxury to have every surface in all of my bathrooms sparkling clean at the same time! I think I'm going to make that a quarterly thing. My 15 year old son cleans his and my husband cleans the front bath, so I know mine is the only one that gets "really" cleaned well - ugh! #SITSSharefest
