Eye Candy : Ji Chang Wook for Ad Hoc

September 29, 2014
Ji Chang Wook, Ji Chang Wook Ad Hoc, Ji Chang Wook Healer, The Healer, 지창욱

Ji Chang Wook is both dapper and debonair modeling the latest looks for Ad Hoc's Fall 2014 catalog. This comely 27 year old actor's star has definitely been on an upward trajectory this year and it seems he hasn't stopped working following a successful run playing a young emperor in Empress Ki. He makes a return to the stage in the musical The Days and will also be starring in the upcoming drama The Healer alongside Yoo Ji Tae and Park Min Young which has been described as a romantic comedy thriller centering around a group of reporters and a longstanding secret. He made an appearance on Running Man recently as well. It was awesome that they teamed him with his Bachelor's Vegetable Store co-star Lee Kwang Soo and he was kind of adorably helpless when they were made to get on some pretty terrifying rides at the amusement park as part of the week's games. I really like the polished yet casual feel of these outfits especially the first and 7th ones. Totally the type of style I like on my husband.

Club Monaco Fall 2014 Look Book

September 26, 2014

I've been back on the Club Monaco bandwagon since their impressively stylish Spring 2014 Look Book and their Fall 2014 Look Book is equally amazing as I find some of these wearable minimalist chic looks calling to me. I would actually want to wear most of these outfits just as they're styled here. This first one is so me. Are you looking to forward to fall weather? What will you be wearing?

Thanks for all your sweet comments regarding my vacation! We had a really incredible and relaxing time in Turks and Caicos with more than a few perfect moments. I'm in the process of editing my photos and will share the experience with you all next week. Here is a little preview. Have a marvelous weekend!

Quote about life

I think I was able to become a much happier person once I realized this. That's all...

I haven't been around this week (I pre-scheduled a few posts) because I'm currently on vacation in Turks and Caicos.
We'll be heading home tonight and I hope to catch up with you all soon.

Style Crush : Alexa Chung

September 22, 2014
Alexa Chung, Alexa Chung Style, Alexa Chung Fashion, Alexa Chung Look For Less

Alexa Chung had one of my favorite outfits at this past NYFW. The fashionable It Girl traded in her signature tomboy style for a decidedly more ladylike look for the front row of the Marc by Marc Jacobs SS15 show. She paired a polka dot Prada silk blouse with a pale pink Marc by Marc Jacobs vinyl pencil skirt and added a touch of edge with a black leather choker and openwork lace up Tabitha Simmons ankle boots. This outfit looks fantastic on her (really what doesn't?) and I love the modern polished vibe. I think it could also work well on those of us who don't have a sylph like figure. However it's not exactly affordable as Alexa's skirt alone is $656 but I was able to recreate the entire look for less than $200 with an H&M blouse that has hearts in place of dots, faux leather River Island skirt, ASOS choker and a pair of Modern Vice suede heels. What do you think of this look? Are you a fan of Alexa Chung's style?

Eye Candy : Ni Ni For Cosmo Bride

September 19, 2014
NiNi, NiNi Cosmpolitan

Ni Ni is absolutely ravishing in the October issue of Cosmo Bride China which is also the magazine's 7th anniversary edition. The makeup and styling is a stunning play of contrasts throughout this pictorial and each image evokes a uniquely beautiful tone. I'm only familiar with Ni Ni's work as an actress in Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War alongside Christian Bale but she is like a breath of fresh air every time I see her in an editorial. It comes as no surprise that she has appeared on over 16 covers this year alone. She recently teamed up with Angelababy for a Chinese remake of the 2009 comedy film Bride Wars starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson. The two play best friends who become bitter rivals when their weddings are accidentally booked on the same day. I wonder who plays which role. The Chinese version will hit theaters next year. Did you watch the original? I seem to recall the two friends doing some pretty awful things to each other.

Don't miss out on this fab NYFW themed beauty box giveaway!

Backstage Beauty at Cynthia Rowley Spring 2015

September 15, 2014
Daniel Martin at Cynthia Rowley Spring 2015, John Barrett at Cynthia Rowley Spring 2015

Following up on my coverage of Cynthia Rowley's groovy Spring 2015 presentation, here is a peek at the backstage beauty. Makeup artist Daniel Martin's said his muse was iconic British singer Marianne Faithfull with a downtown twist and he termed the look "broken" as if the models had slept in it the night before. The striking eye look was created using Cynthia Rowley Beauty's stunning new color-blocked Game Face Eyeshadow Palette (available only at Birchbox on October 8). He defined the top lash line with the Mini Eye Liner Pencil in Black and went over it using the deep charcoal shade called Knockout. To build the "chunky lashes", Daniel and his team used individual false lashes followed by several coats of mascara. He muted the lips with W3LL People Narcissist Stick Foundation before applying Cynthia Rowley Beauty's Creamy Lipstain in Sugar for a subtle nude pink pout. The brows were kept natural and a shimmery vanilla shade called MVP was used to create soft highlights on the brow bones and cheeks. John Barrett of the John Barrett Salon created modern and textured hair looks to complement the modernity of the collection. The futuristic looking styles called for a good deal of twirling and teasing using John Barrett's Be Healed Styling Mask and Shu Uemura's Essence Absolue Cream in Oil for volume, shine and control. There was also plenty of hairspray going around. Color Club was on hand to provide glossy neutral colored manicures matched to the models' individual skin tones to keep the focus on the clothes.

The hair might be a little difficult to pull off but I find this makeup look to be very pretty and wearable. What do you think?

Special thanks to Birchbox, the exclusive backstage sponsor of the show for this insider's view.

Cynthia Rowley RTW Spring 2015

September 12, 2014
Cynthia Rowley Spring 2015, CRlandia, NFFW

I had the pleasure of attending the Cynthia Rowley Spring 2015 NYFW presentation as a guest of Birchbox, the exclusive backstage sponsor. The show took place on Tuesday, 09/09/14 at the Swiss Institute in Soho. Incidentally this was also the space that hosted the Chanel Little Black Jacket Exhibition. Cynthia Rowley's design aesthetic has consistently been fresh, feminine and whimsical and this collection was no exception with the addition of a modernized 60's/70's vibe. The models were presented atop pedestals in splashy graphic pastel prints and large scale cutout appliqués and floral lace on swingy trapeze dresses and tunic and flared pants sets. The presentation dubbed #CRlandia also included the designer's activewear line which featured a selection of modern athletic wear that juxtaposed sporty function with pretty details like metallic gold flowers and lettering to scallops on a pair of running shorts. See the entire look book.

Thanks to Birchbox, I also had access to the backstage beauty. Meet me back here on Monday to get the details on the makeup and hair! I totally forgot to snap a pic of my outfit but it did include these Pumas and my Frankenstein ankle brace. Sadly I've started wearing it again but that's a story for another day.

My favorites were the black floral lace top with the racing stripe flares and the periwinkle blue coat. What do you think of this collection? Any of the looks catch your eye?

All photos by me.

Essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit Review

September 8, 2014
Aromatherapy in the Shower

I recently purchased a set of essential oils as I'd been curious about their benefits for general wellness. Numerous studies have shown that the use of essentials oils can improve stress levels and produce calming effects for users. In addition they can provide a positive effect skin tone as well as the immune and circulatory systems. So I was definitely interested when Essio contacted me to try out their Essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit which claims to transform your everyday shower into a personal spa by creating an innovative aromatherapy experience with essential oils.

Floral Friday

Flower Photography, Pink Flower, Floral Friday

Flowers have to make their way through the dirt in order to blossom. Their beauty and energy should help to remind us of the possibilities of life and that when times are hard we need to find the strength to push through to get past it.

Floral Friday is a monthly photography project with different themes each month. This series is about fun and taking time out to smell the flowers. To play along, please email Trishie for next month's theme.

Youtheory Collagen Advanced Review

September 3, 2014
Youtheory Collagen Advanced Review, Collagen Supplement

Though I currently have a multi-step daily skincare regimen that I religiously follow, I am also sensible enough to know that no matter what I apply topically, good skin and well being definitely starts from the inside out which is why I make sure to hydrate adequately and keep to a healthy diet. I try to eat collagen rich foods like dark leafy greens, beans, salmon and avocado. Oxtail stew also happens to be a favorite in our house. Collagen is the key structural protein in our bodies which is integrally involved in the production of strong and healthy hair, nails, tendons, bones, muscle and keeping your skin smooth.

I figured it wouldn't hurt to supplement my diet so I agreed to try out youtheory's Collagen Advanced Formula type 1,2 & 3 with 18 amino acids. I wasn't aware that there were different types of collagen. As it turns out, collagen 1 and 3 are the main collagen types in connective tissue and collagen 2 provides joint support for our cartilage. These supplements contain hydrolyzed collagen which is a highly digestible protein. Oral ingestion of this type of collagen has shown beneficial effects on joint and bone health, skin health, weight management and sports performance.

To be honest, I was actually interested in this product more for the joint and ligament benefits than for my skin, hair or nails. It's been a long haul to a full recovery since injuring my ankle last year and I'm so prone to re-injury now that I would try anything to help prevent that. I've been taking 4 tablets a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. The suggested serving is 6 tablets per day. They're about the size of a multi-vitamin and are easy to swallow.

youtheory Collagen Advanced is a natural formula containing collagen, calcium and magnesium. Each serving is 26 calories and provides 10mg of Sodium, 6g of Protein (as Collagen types 1, 2 & 3), 60mg of Vitamin C (as Calcium Ascorbate). It is free of corn, wheat, yeast, sugar, fat or dairy products.

Since taking it, I don't feel like I've experienced anything miraculous but I also haven't had any ill effects. I will say that my nails definitely do seem stronger and are growing faster and my hair is shinier. I suspect that I may need to take it longer for the joint support benefits that I'm seeking to really kick in though I have noticed that I seem to be recovering quicker after my workouts.

youtheory Collagen Advanced Formula is sold at Amazon, Walgreens,  and other leading retailers. Learn more about youtheory and their other products on the brand's website.

Do you take any supplements? Would you consider taking a beauty supplement?

Eye Candy : Yao Chen for Self

September 1, 2014
Yao Chen, Yao Chen Self

This Self China editorial with Yao Chen is fabulous not only because the photos are lovely but because her exuberant personality really shines through. The award winning actress was ranked 83rd among the world's most influential women by Forbes earlier this year. That may have something to do with her status as the most followed celebrity on Weibo (China's version of Twitter) with over 72 million fans. She uses the platform to update her fans on her work as well as to raise awareness about social issues. Notably she has addressed the topics of media censorship and air pollution in China. I thought she was quite charming in Color Me Love, a romantic comedy that has drawn comparisons to The Devil Wears Prada. And I admire Yao Chen even more for how she's using her considerable influence on social media to try to make a positive impact considering some celebrities only know how to post half naked pics of themselves for attention. And oh yeah her hair is seriously gorgeous too!
