Caring For Your Skin Is Something You Should Do Everyday!

My daily skincare routine is something that I strive never to neglect. Sometimes I'll be running late or life will intervene with some obstacles, but it's something I always get round to. I love to try out new skin care treatments, so if they're a bargain buy thanks to Kohl's coupons I'll buy them for future use. Sometime I might just open a drawer and see all the skincare products I still haven't managed to use yet!

Sticking to a regular skincare routine is one of the best ways to avoid common skin issues and also delay the natural aging process which is something that all of us care about, even if we claim that we don't. We may not all have time for intensive skincare rituals, so here are a few things you can do everyday day to keep your skin looking healthy and avoid those wrinkles for as long as possible.

The sun is not your friend
As much as you might think you are a sun goddess who can spend hours being worshipped by golden sunlight, the unfortunate truth is that those pesky little UV rays do more harm than good. Not only can a lifetime spent in the sun cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems - it also increases the risk of skin cancer.

So pull out that broad spectrum sunscreen, and get your sun armour on. A lot of sunscreens are quite greasy so rather use combination moisturizers, primers, foundations and other facial products that offer protection from the sun as well. No matter the season, the weather or if you spend all day in doors - you need sunscreen, especially for your face!

This Karyng Complete Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a current favorite of mine because it combines moisturizer and sunscreen in a lightweight and long wearing formula along with noticeable skincare benefits. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, consider investing in a wide brimmed sun hat, and stick to the shade as much as possible. Check out these important sun safety facts that everyone should be aware of.

Care for your skin type
Although lumped under the broad headings of oily, dry or combination skin, every single person has a completely different type of skin. What works for one person's oily skin might not be as effective for yours and the daily skincare routine that I use for my combination skin might cause breakouts for someone else.

Different skin types have different needs and each come with their own set of problems that you'll need to learn to deal with. So identify the type of skin you have, and then look for products that are designed to help deal with its unique problems without causing others that you'll need even more products to address. Consider double cleansing which is something that benefits all skin types.

Again, the thing to remember is that what works for one person might not work for you, so even if someone swears by a certain product or homemade beauty product recipe - you will need to try it out for yourself. So before spending all your money on an expensive product that doesn't work, see if you can get samples to try out.

Exfoliation is the first step
Did you know that dust is mostly made up dead skin cells (yech!)? So no matter what type of skin you have, or how often you wash your face, or even how amazing your moisturizer is, over time you'll find a very thin layer of dead skin cells building up on your skin. And this leads to clogged pored which leads to the well known and universally hated carbuncle!

Just cleansing and moisturizing on a daily basis isn't quite enough, every now and then you'll need to give your face (and the rest of your body) a proper scrub to ensure that all those icky dead skin cells are removed. Some people will only need to do this once a week, others (like those with oily skin) will need to do it more often.

Homemade face scrubs (lemon and coconut oil, or honey and oatmeal are great options) but if you prefer ready made beauty products then look for those made with natural, organic ingredients and don't contain any harsh chemicals that will damage your skin in the long run. Facial masks are also a great way to supplement your skin with nourishment after exfoliating.

Rehydrate that thirsty skin
Your skin is made up of three layers and each have their own purpose. The outer layer(epidermis) is your waterproof barrier and creates your skin tone, the second is your dermis and has a water content of over 60%. Well actually, that's what your water content should be. But time in the sun, the season and a multitude of other factors can dry your skin out.

And the dryer your skin is, the more likely it is that those wrinkles you're dreading will appear sooner (or get worse than they already are).So no matter your skin type, you should be rehydrating your skin with a moisturizer every day. In fact, any beauty products you use should have some moisturizing component.

And don't think that because you have oily or combination skin that moisturizer is unnecessary, because that oil is not the same as hydration. Actually the more skin is dehydrated the more oil it will produce. Oily skin needs to be moisturized since it balances oil production  Just look for lightweight options like gel based serums.

Try to stay happy and healthy
The simplest way to take care of your skin is to eat healthy more often than succumbing to the guilty pleasure of junk food and sweets. Foods that are high in beta carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin A are ideal but a diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins are the best way to look and feel your best.

Smoking damages collagen and elastin which is what gives your skin strength and elasticity, plus it also makes you look older. So don't smoke, and try quit if you already do! If you can't survive without nicotine then try to cut down or switch to e-cigarettes. You should also exercise regularly or at least make sure you're fit.

There are days when it will seem an impossible task, but try to avoid stress as much as you can. Not only does it make you frown which leads to wrinkles, stress wears your body out and prevents restful sleep. And if you don't get enough sleep, your body won't be able to rejuvenate so you'll look and feel worse over time.

Although your skin is constantly rejuvenating itself, sloughing off dead skin cells and making new ones - you cannot replace it when it gets damaged or worn out. The skin you have now is the skin you have for the rest of your life. Not all careless damage and scars can be easily undone. So be gentle with your skin, take care of it every day and if you're still struggling to get it looking healthy, go see a professional dermatologist!

Yes, my morning and evening skincare routines are a must, daily. Even though I have been drinking and smoking, I believe that the time and creams I've invested in, have paid off after all these years.

Such a great post! I agree with your conclusion. I do believe that everyone following your excellent tips will end up with healthy (or healthier) skin but there are also situations when a dermatologist needs to be called in to help. I always think that if we are going through a long lasting skin problem (or one that can be potentially hazardous for our health) we should visit a skin doctor.

Beauticians can help with minor problems, but they can't replace a dermatologist. A few times in my life when I had skin problems, dermatologist had really helped me a lot and I was always glad I went to visit them. It's their job and they really know the best.

Wearing a hat is one wonderful but for some reason often forgotten remedy against the sun. Not only does it help in protecting our face against the sun, it also reduces fatigue that the sun may cause and it makes us more cool...hat is not just a fashion accessory, it is a very useful tool, during all fashion seasons.

Plus, I must add that 'beauty sleep' is an absolutely true phrase. No matter how cautious we are with our skin care, if we get only a few hours of sleep, our skin won't look nice! The lack of sleep always shows.

These are such wonderful tips, Rowena! Thank you for the reminder that skin care is very important. Lately, I've been neglecting the exfoliating part, and my skin has really suffered for it...sigh....And yes about the sun being the enemy! The vampires had it right all along! :D

PS I just saw Man On High Heels and am back to being in love with Cha Seung Won again. I think he's my #1, followed by So Ji Sub:D CSW is really such a great actor, and not too bad on the eyes either...hehe... I'm just watching Blood right now, but gosh, I should really just watch City Hall! If you have any recs for Kmovies, please feel free to throw some titles my way. I'm kinda digging the revenge genre, but any good movies will do:D

I have been telling myself that I need to stop purchasing makeup and start concentrating on skincare as it's the best thing I can do for my skin. Having a great skin is better than any makeup can provide.

Yeah, it would have been great if I read this post 10 years ago when I didn't care about my skin. Now I have scars from acne that will stay on my face for a life time. At least I quit smoking 6 years ago and I don't want to get back to it for any reason. Great tips Rowena! Thank you for sharing them! :)

I loved this post Rowena! Everything you stated is so true! When I first started beauty blogging, I wish the first thing I did was try out skincare. It's the basis for everything else. It wasn't until I found a good skin care regimen (products) that my makeup laid better. Its the first thing one should do.

Totally great skincare tips, Rowena. As much as we strive to look our best with makeup, skincare is way more important than anything else. Good skincare is the best step to a great canvas for just that little enhancement with makeup *_^

I tend to run out of sun blocks and do need to look into this area soonest. My recent quick chat with the educator of Melvita, a beautiful organic French beauty skincare brand could not have come at the right time. He totally emphasises on cleansing, in fact, according to him, that's the most important step in our skincare routine.

I totally agree with double cleansing and rehydrate our skin, even with my combination skin, I am constantly dehydrated. Awesome post! Thanks for sharing.
