Eat Beautiful: Nourish Your Skin From The Inside Out

"I'm a big believer in nurturing not only the outer skin, but also what lies beneath - our organs and intestines. What's happening in our outer skin - the skin we can see - is often a reflection of the health of our insides; our organs are hugely hardworking and important in their own right. If you don't service the car, it's not going to work well. Skincare is important, of course, but eating a range of good quality, skin friendly foods - seasonal and organically produced when possible - will provide the best foundation. This will ensure your skin has a healthy glow."
Wendy Rowe

The saying "you are what you eat" is one of those that I really believe and that's why this book appealed to me. Despite my undeniable love for pizza, I generally try to follow a balanced diet because what you put into your body contributes as much to your overall appearance and wellbeing as well as what you put onto it.

Eat Beautiful is written by international beauty expert and Burberry Beauty artistic consultant Wendy Rowe who has over  20 years of experience as a makeup artist and beauty consultant. Part cookbook, part beauty guide she takes a simple and holistic approach in laying out the foundation for a healthy skin diet that feeds your body and skin from the inside out. With a forward by actress Sienna Miller, the book dives right into a general discussion about beauty and food and how it all comes together through mindful eating, moving around and cutting down on stress. Notable stress busters include sleep, exercise and regular tech detoxes.

Eat Beautiful is organized by season with a chapter for Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter that covers seasonal foods with a discussion their benefits and a detailed breakdown of their skin feeding vitamins and nutrients. And then there are recipes that have been designed to highlight those ingredients. She talks about eating the rainbow and it comes as no surprise that this includes a good number of vegetables and fruits since they're natural antioxidant powerhouses with nutrients that reduce inflammation and aid in repair while helping skin to detoxify and defend against free radical damage. She is an advocate of my daily lemon water habit and also starts her days with this drink!

The book contains over 70 recipes for radiant skin and they're definitely not all salads. These are recipes that incorporate whole foods and include an range of appetizers, entrees, desserts and treats. The recipes are easy to to follow and include ingredients that everyone should be able to easily access.  It is notable that the recipes keep the focus on showcasing foods with benefits rather than a on a bunch of exclusions. There is no talk of cutting out this or that but rather a talk about mindful eating and moderation. She doesn't tell you not to drink but to keep to a limit of a glass or two and have at least three dry days a week. Good fats are encouraged. In fact the only thing that she recommends against is sugar. Overconsumption of sugar speeds up the aging process since it damages collagen and elastin making it more prone to wrinkles and dullness.

The recipes are varied from soups to noodles to stir fries. While fish is the predominant protein, some do include chicken and meat. Rowe says that there is nothing wrong with eating meat because sometimes the body does require the iron, protein and B vitamins it provides. She does advise sticking with organic grass-fed options since they are antibiotic and hormone free. I pretty much buy organic meat/chicken and I can say there is a difference in both the quality and taste. There's even a recipe for pizza - Herby Leek and Pancetta Pizza to be exact which I really must try!

Wendy Rowe also draws upon her beauty background with a chapter dedicated to Beauty Tips in which she shares her personal non-negotiable daily skincare routine and dispenses self-help advice on skin issues with specifics on care as well as the foods to choose or avoid to alleviate those problems. And there are recipes for homemade masks, scrubs, mists, cleansers and toners to pamper and feed your skin from the outside. She always puts the spotlight on suncare and the importance of proper sun protection. Here are some important sun protection facts you should know.

This book is as  informative as it is beautifully presented. While I can't say that it has necessarily sparked a major change in my lifestyle since I already try to adhere to healthy food choices and skin care habits. I do feel as if the knowledge I gained through reading it will better inform my decisions going forward and I have gained a new perspective on using food to target or alleviate certain conditions. And this makes me feel even better about my obsessions with garlic, avocados, seaweed and miso now! This book will not be going into my bookshelf but instead I will be keeping it handy as a reference guide and I look forward to exploring using herbs and spices for healing and trying out some of the recipes.

What do you think about the concept of eat beautiful? How do you maintain healthy eating habits? I gave up sugar, don't drink and I'm a part-time vegetarian.

That ties right in with our challenge! Now that it is almost finished I have to say I do notice a difference from cutting out sugar, but I was a little concerned about the fact that she did not really make an emphasis on using seasonal fruit. I mean, I love avocados, but in Germany in the winter they are really expensive. And not environmental conscious to eat.

I definitely believe that beauty comes (partially) from within and is affected by what you eat! I think I already eat a healthy and balanced diet (let's just ignore all the chocolate) but I still enjoy reading books like this.

Love this its my model I'm a big believer you get certain benefits that help the skin and your healthy eating right. I also enjoy doing my own scrubs you know what ingredients are in it and that its a plus. Herbs not many people know beside it bring out flavor to food its a medicine that helps with certain issues. Balance diet all in moderation it had work for me.

I've heard so much about this book and have tempted a few times! Funnily enough, I'm starting to pay more attention to what I'm putting 'in' my body and not just 'on' my body, and so I can imagine this would be a brilliant read! Thanks for the fab review, Rowena :)

I absolutely agree with the premise of this book. If our general health is good, the chances of our skin looking well are that much higher. Any sort of infection and inflammation in our organism is bound to show on our skin. Sugar greatly increases risks of inflammation. I always make sure to cut it out completely if I have a bladder infection or anything of the sort. It makes the healing process that much easier. At the moment I'm consuming sugar (today I made a tiramisu) but I try to keep it to a minimum, for I'm definitely aware of its hazardous impact, both on our skin and on our body.

As far as food goes, I eat pretty healthy. I'm fortunate to have grown up in a wonderful food culture where fish and vegetables are the foundation of our diet. Sweets are definitely my weakness but I'm keeping it under control. I do agree with the tips from this book...veggies are so important. People eat too much meat today- and red meat has been linked to cancer in a number or studies.

Another thing that is important for skin is getting plenty of rest and getting away from screens. I totally agree with that. Most of us have work related 'screen time' but making time for a nice walk (fresh air can't hurt) is crucial. I'm a big fan of walks. Time spent outdoors boosts our immune system and with a good sun screen there is nothing to worry about.

Eating clean and healthy is something I try and try but I do slip and go into a mode where all I am craving is soda, iced tea, sugar and processed foods. I am hoping and wishing for more will power this year. I see it with my own dogs at how much healthier they get with a diet change. Certainly can do us a great favor too to eat cleaner and healthier.

I love pizza also. I wish I could eat it every day, but my summer body and pizza don't mix. I love this book, I’ve never heard of it, but I need it. I am a firm believer in putting good into your body so you can get good out. I stuff kale, raw vegetables, olive oil, nut, and lean protein into my mouth every day. Making sure to avoid process foods, fatty foods, and fried foods. I'm also eating carbs, and water, lots and lots of water.

I completely believe it as well and try to plan my family's menus with this type of balance in mind. We've eaten pretty well, though not on vacation! Oh and herby leek and pancetta pizza sounds divine!

I've seen this book around on the blogosphere and it sounds interesting. I try to eat a balanced diet but I must admit I'm not as good at it as I would like to be XD I think the premise of this book sounds promising... on the other hand I am a bit salty about the topic. I've suffered from acne for many years and the amount of times that people have told me to stop eating greasy foods and my acne will magically disappear is annoyingly high. Of course eating healthy is good your skin but there's so many factors out there that also affect it-- hormones, the environment, your skincare routine, genetics, etc. Then again even if my skin didn't improve from a more balanced diet it's not like I'm losing anything (besides maybe the opportunity to eat some yummy yet unhealthy foods XD.) Thanks for your honest thoughts on the book, Rowena!

Thanks for introducing this book to us, Rowena! I keep thinking that I should eat better and cleaner but also find it hard especially on a hectic day. I need some inspiration and more reasonings! ;)

I hope you stay warm and safe in this blizzard. Luckily, I am staying home today and admiring the beauty of it. :)

Sounds like a really good book! :) I probably eat more chocolate/sugar than I should but I do try balance it out with lots of fruit and veggies. It's funny, now that the boys are big enough to copy our eating habits, I'm always at the grocery store buying more orange or apples or bananas. It's good that they love and request fruit over cookies, as that will probably change when they are teens haha!

Hope you have a great weekend :)
