How To Help After Hurricane Harvey

Even though I live on the other side of the country, it's been hard this week to not be affected by the heartbreaking images of Hurricane Harvey tearing through Texas, flooding and displacing the lives and homes of so many. We lived through Hurricane Sandy in New York and were very fortunate to lose nothing more than our electricity and hot water for a week. The destruction in Texas has been devastating and while relief efforts are underway, just based on history there will be a long road back. While the US is fractured in so many ways right now, people always seem to come together when disaster strikes and for those who want to help, the best way to do that is to give money. The amount doesn't matter, whatever works for you. Just make sure to do your research and vet any potential charitable organization before you donate. The NY Times has a really helpful article on donating and how to avoid scams. Here is a list of established charities who are accepting Harvey-specific donations.

The Red Cross
Visit their website or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation

The United Way of Greater Houston
Visit their website or text the word UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund

The Salvation Army
Visit their website or text the word STORM to 51555 or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY to donate to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund

Global Giving
Visit their website or text the word HARVEY to 80100 to donate $10 to Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund

Save the Children
Visit their website or text the word HURRICANE to 20222 to donate $25 to the Hurricane Harvey Children’s Relief Fund.

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund
Established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation to accept tax deductible donations. Visit the GHCF website to make a donation.

Charity Navigator has a list of local Hurricane Harvey specific organizations that are providing support to those in affected areas.

GoFundMe has set up a dedicated Hurricane Harvey page with hundreds of charities working on and off the ground in Texas to help with the aftermath.

Red Cross and Salvation Army are our two go-to charities too because we know they are legit. Good to know about the others, Rowena. xx

It is so important to check if the charity you donate to is legit, too many people take advantage of people willing to help and try to rip them off. This list is very helpful.

So glad you put this list together Rowena! There are so many scammers out there. It's heartbreaking to see the devastation. Having gone through Katrina, I understand. Now, I'm watching IRMA! She's a Cat 5 and I do not like the projected path at all.
