Dine Out : Cherche Midi

Cherche Midi Review, Cherche Midi NYC, Cherche Midi restaurant, Black Label Burger

Cherche Midi is an upscale eatery located on the corner of Houston and the Bowery that serves up a range of classic French fare. The bistro styled bar and dining room is decorated with an array of globe lights, subway tiles, red leather banquettes and antique mirrors that create a warm lived in and cozy ambiance. We decided to go during Restaurant Week when we saw that their famous Black Label Burger was on the menu. This burger which is supposed to one of the very best in NYC has been on our hit list for awhile.

We started out with the salmon tartare and burrata with heirloom tomatoes. Both dishes were light and well balanced in flavor. The Black Label Burger is made from a special Pat LaFrieda blend of high quality dry aged ribeye, short rib, skirt steak, and brisket. It is simply topped with caramelized onions and served on a lightly toasted brioche bun accompanied with butter lettuce, tomato, pickles and a generous pile of crispy pommes frites on the side. This burger was juicy, succulent and loaded with rich meaty flavor. It was good enough on it's own that my husband and I both felt that the sweetness of the caramelized onions dialed down some of it's delicious umami. I don't see us paying $32 for a burger on the regular but it's definitely worth trying once if you're a fan of burgers at all. And to be included in a $42 three course prix fixe made it more worthwhile. I don't even know how we managed to fit in dessert after that burger but I did manage a few bites of the yogurt panna cotta which was very tangy and refreshing. Panna cotta is one of the few desserts I have a weakness for. The crȇpes suzette were also good. Even though there was a lag between our dinner and dessert courses, the service was extremely accommodating and attentive overall. This is a great date restaurant and the whole experience reminded me alot of the bistros in Le Marais that we were quite fond of the last time we visited Paris.

Are you a fan of French food? How about burgers?

salmon tartare sounds like something I would enjoy. I love eating fish- and raw fish always appealed to my taste. This seems like a great place to dine. I'm not a fan of burgers, but if one is, I do understand why one would love to try out a gastro burger ( I think they're sometimes called that, those that are served in restaurants). I don't like elitism in food, I always feel we shouldn't worry about definitions. Food preparation is what is important and if the burger is prepared in the right way, it can be a sensational meal. It all depends on the skill of the chef, doesn't it? and on ingredients naturally. Sure one won't feel like eating a 30 dollars burger every day, but once in a while, why not?

I love panna cotta! It's the perfect desert.

The Black Label burger sounds like it lived up to its name....nomnom...$32 is a tad pricey but what a deal that it came with the $42 prix fixe meal! And the rest of your meal looked so freaking good, Rowena! I'd stuff myself with these...hehe....

PS Forgot to tell you I saw The Wailing over the weekend! Thanks for the rec:) That's a mind bender...that one....

The bistro-styled bar and dining room sounds ever so appealing and idea for a romantic setting, as you've suggested. As far as cuisine goes, this truly looks like something I'd enjoy. Should I ever find myself in the area, I'd most definitely give this place a try! :) Brilliant review, Rowena.

I'm not the biggest fan of French cuisine or I was not a fan of my ex-bf who was French and his cooking. He also took me out to dine at French restaurants before but maybe I was young and had no idea how to appreciate different cuisine, I wasn't too thrilled about the restaurants too. That said, I am the biggest fan of burgers! I would eat one everyday if it wasn't for the massive amount of weight that I would gain. Haha!

This seems like a good upscale place in the city for burger-lovers. I recently had a truffle (mushroom/veggie) burger that was phenomenal. I do enjoy French food. You can find some bistros and restaurants in France that actually are affordable, at least when we visit we always seem to find them, and splurge on one or two fine dining places. Often, I have noticed in locations like the US and some parts of the UK French food can get pricier for normal dishes. But, I'd try this place if I could. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week, Rowena! :)

It has been years since I had French food, or at least as close as Indianapolis came to it in the 80's :) But a burger I will take every time and especially those beautiful desserts as well :) xoxo

This is going on my list too! I do love a good burger once in a while. Panna cotta sounds like a great end to the meal - refreshing with just a little sweetness!

That black label burger sounds like something the hubs would love -- meat, meat and more meat. The dessert looks yummy to me.

It's great for every now and then! I also love the ambiance of the restaurant. BUT, I bet you wouldn't give up your IN N OUT burgers!?!? Oh gosh! When you show them on your instagram feed I DROOL!

I am definitely a fan of gourmet burgers, and this one looks so delicious, Rowena! I actually like sweet onion, so more of it wouldn't be a problem for me. I usually feel so full after eating a burger, but good for you to have managed the dessert as well. The burger is a bit pricey, usually here they cost around $10-$15. Nice post, Rowena!
