When it comes to skincare, serums have emerged as a game-changer by offering targeted solutions for a myriad of skin concerns. Whether you're battling fine lines, uneven texture, or dullness, incorporating a serum into your routine can make a significant difference. If you’re looking to level up your skincare game and address specific concerns effectively, a serum can be the answer. Let's take a look at why serums are essential and how they can transform your skincare routine.
What Are SerumsSerums are lightweight, concentrated liquid treatments packed with high concentrations of active ingredients. Unlike moisturizers, which primarily hydrate the skin, serums are designed to deliver potent nutrients directly into the deeper layers of the skin. This makes them more effective at addressing specific issues such as aging, pigmentation, and dehydration.
The Science Behind Serums
The power of serums lies in their formulations. Serums are typically water-based or oil-based to deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients that penetrate the surface skin of the skin to work at a cellular level. This makes them ideal for layering under other skincare products which also enhances their efficacy.

Key Benefits Of Serums In Skincare
● Provides A Targeted Treatment
● Provides A Targeted Treatment
One of the most compelling reasons to use serums is their ability to target specific skin concerns. Whether you're dealing with acne, hyperpigmentation, or wrinkles, there's a serum formulated to address your unique needs. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and retinol are commonly found in serums, each offering distinct benefits.
● Higher Concentration Of Active Ingredients
● Higher Concentration Of Active Ingredients
Serums generally contain a higher concentration of active ingredients compared to other skincare products. This means you get more bang for your buck, as these potent formulations can deliver visible results faster. For instance, a vitamin C serum can brighten your complexion and reduce dark spots more effectively than a regular moisturizer.
● Enhanced Absorption
● Enhanced Absorption
Due to their lightweight nature, serums are easily absorbed by the skin. This ensures that the active ingredients penetrate deeply, maximizing their efficacy. When applied after cleansing and before moisturizing, serums can work their magic without being hindered by other products.
● Improves Skin Texture
Regular use of serums can lead to noticeable improvements in skin texture. Ingredients like peptides and antioxidants help to smooth out rough patches, reduce the appearance of pores, and enhance overall skin tone. The result is a more radiant and youthful complexion.
Popular Types Of Serums
● Hydrating Serums: These are ideal for dry skin and contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid to boost moisture levels and plump the skin.

How Serums Fit Into Your Skincare Routine
Serums have a definitive role in any skincare regimen. Here's a quick breakdown.
Serums have a definitive role in any skincare regimen. Here's a quick breakdown.
1. Cleanse And Tone Your Skin
Start with a gentle cleanser to remove any impurities and prepare your skin for the serum. Clean skin ensures better absorption and effectiveness of the serum.
2. Apply Serum
Apply a few drops of serum to your face and neck. Gently pat it into your skin, allowing it to absorb fully. Remember, a little goes a long way.
3. Top With Moisturizer
Once the serum is absorbed, follow up with your favorite moisturizer to lock in hydration and create a protective barrier. This step is crucial to prevent moisture loss and keep your skin plump and healthy.
As with all skincare products, you will need to use any new serums consistently over several weeks to achieve optimal results. You also need to layer wisely as certain active ingredients used in combination could cause irritation or diminish efficacy. For example, you should not use retinoids and vitamin C in the same routine to prevent irritation. While niacinamide and hyaluronic acid work nicely in combination to promote a brighter, plumper complexion.
Serums are a powerful addition to any skincare routine by providing targeted solutions and visible results. By incorporating a serum tailored to your skin's needs, you can achieve a radiant, youthful complexion that glows. I always have a serum or two in my skincare routine at any time to address my skin issues which are dullness and dryness. I've recently added the ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum to my skincare routine and the ANUA Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum became a part of my husband's skincare regimen.
$27 (30 mL / 1.01 fl. oz.)

This nourishing serum has a watery texture that applies smoothly, instantly absorbing and imparting a dose of moisture. I've been able to incorporate it into my morning and evening skincare routine with no issues. I pair it with my vitamin C serum for day and retinol at night. The moisturizing properties are excellent and long lasting. I've noticed that it definitely enhances the level of moisture in my skin. My face is well hydrated and refreshed with a dewy glow when I use it. I like the softness and long lasting hydration it provides and how it plays well with other products that I layer it with. It's a very nice serum at a great price point and I love that it has no added fragrance like the rest of their products.
$22 (30 mL / 1.01 fl. oz.)
Formulated with a blend of skin-soothing and hydrating ingredients, this serum is an ideal solution for sensitive and irritated skin since it helps to calm redness while deeply moisturizing for a balanced, healthy complexion. Azelaic Acid which is is clinically proven to soothe irritated skin due to dryness can also improve a number of skin concerns including acne, redness (rosacea) and hyperpigmentation. 3 types of Hyaluronic Acid provide moisture. The serum’s benefits are enhanced by ANUA’s Gentle Calming Complex consisting of Blue Tansy Oil, Ubiquinone, Green Tea Leaf Water, Aloe Leaf Juice and 7 types of Cica to soothe irritation. This also gives the serum its natural green color. This nourishing serum is specifically designed to strengthen the skin’s barrier and boost hydration making it perfect to use every day and pair with any actives in your skincare routine.
I thought this serum would suit my husband who has mild rosacea better so we slotted it into his daily routine. He likes the lightweight feel and how quickly it absorbs without any heaviness or stickiness because he doesn't like to have to wait to apply his other skincare. We've been paring it with his Niacinamide & Zinc serum without any issues. It layers well with that and under moisturizer and sun protection. It works gently and effectively without any irritation and does indeed soothe and calm skin as claimed. He likes it enough that this serum might replace another one in his routine.
If you're looking to try a new serum, I would highly recommend either of these depending on your skin type and concerns. They're both lovely serums that are gentle yet effective, hydrating, work without any irritation and layer well with other products.
These two serums can be purchased from Ulta Beauty, YesStyle and Amazon. ANUA skincare products are highly popular because of their uniquely effective formulations that are also affordably priced. A number of ANUA products are currently on sale during Amazon's Spring Sale including both of these serums. I would recommend their rice water collection (Read my review), their highly popular redness-reducing toner, pore-shrinking cleanser and this bestselling transformational brightening serum (Read my review). ANUA products are fragrance-free, cruelty-free and dermatologically tested to be suitable for all skin types.

Since I started using serum in my skincare routine, I've definitely noticed a change. I've seen this brand but haven't had the chance to try it yet. I'll make a note of it for when it's time to renew my routine, the packaging looks pretty and the natural ingredients of your formula sound interesting, thanks for share.

I have been seeing Anua serum online, thought it was over hyped, however, your review makes me want to try it, especially the azelaic acid + hyaluron serum.

I use Anua Peach and Tranzemic Niacinamide!
I don't use any serums right now but I used a couple of serums over the years, two really nice ones that were gifted to me last year (over the course of that year). They were all by local brands and they were so lovely. But I haven't seen them in stores.
Anyway, these serums look fantastic!
I believe in serums, funnily enough my mum used to use French serums growing up and I didn't really need or use them. Now, all I use are serums in my routine alongside my favourite moisturisers. Hope all is goign well this week for you Rowena, dear. Happy Spring! x /Madison
