Post Hurricane Sandy Update

October 31, 2012

Hey everyone! Just popped by to say that I won't be able to post or comment for abit. If you haven't heard, the Eastern coast of the US has been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. I count myself extremely fortunate in that we did not personally suffer any damage or ill effects even though we did lose our power, water and phone service in Lower Manhattan. While we're waiting for it to be restored, I'm so glad we have a gas stove and many pots filled with water. I've become quite adept at cooking by candlelight and dancing around in the dark to our iPods has been our nightly entertainment. We're also sleeping alot. I haven't been this rested up in awhile. In all seriousness, my thoughts and well wishes go out to those who really suffered and I hope all my East Coast and NYC blogger friends made it through the storm unscathed.

I tagged along with my husband to work today to catch a shower and partake in some power. On the bus, a man asked his female companion where she wanted get off, to which she replied "Where there's power!" Everyone just cracked up. It's nice that we can still laugh.

Eye Candy : Faye Wong for Harper's Bazaar

October 26, 2012

This could be considered a follow-up to last week's eye candy post of that spectacular black + white editorial in Harper's Bazaar China's 26th anniversary issue. The magazine also features a special double cover along with a vibrant pictorial starring iconic singer/actress Faye Wong photographed by Chen Man. I've always been a fan of Faye Wong's individualized style of music and strong character. With an ardent international fan base, she is one of Asia's biggest celebrities despite not bowing to conventions and being intensely private and indifferent to the media. She is also an actress most well known for Wong Kar Wai's 2046 and Chungking Express which happens to be one of my favorite films.

A Blogiversary & A Giveaway

October 22, 2012

10.06.12 marked the official one year anniversary of rolala loves. I'm thrilled to still be blogging and thank you all for reading, following, commenting and reaching out. I especially appreciate everyone who hung in with me through my health issues this year. The positivity and encouragement I received really helped keep me going during that time. I'm still not quite 100% but getting there. It's been an amazing journey and one I hope to continue on and I can't think of a better way to celebrate than with a giveaway.

As this peek at my bookshelf showed, I have a fondness for photography, fashion and design books. A recent addition is 'The Perfectly Imperfect Home' by Deborah Needleman, the former founding editor of Domino magazine (a publication I still miss). It's a terrrific resource that delivers practical decorating advice as well as how to add those finishing touches that imbue character with your personality. What I found refreshing is the emphasis on comfort and function as well as style because as she puts it "Style is a luxury and luxury is simply what makes you happy." The information is presented in a pertinent and witty manner while the charming watercolor illustrations of Virginia Johnson are cheerfully inspiring. The chapter entitled 'Places for Chatting' which includes a guide to basic sofa styles has been particularly relevant as we're in the process of looking to replace ours. An enlightening point is made that one third of our lives are spent in bed with much of the other two thirds spent in seats so therefore sofas and chairs may actually be the most important pieces of furniture in our homes. Goodness should be shared so I'd like to give one lucky reader a chance to add a copy of this book to your collection.

Eye Candy : Une Journée à Paris

October 19, 2012

Harper's Bazaar China celebrates it's 26th anniversary in style with this elegant nostalgic 'Journey to Paris' editorial. A sense of classic sophistication emanates from the vintage ladylike fashions while the retro style images totally harken back to the work of fashion photography greats Richard Avedon and Henry Clarke.

Through My Lens : Recently

October 16, 2012
A glimpse at my life recently in photos. A visit to the doctor usually isn't so bad if I include a stop at Ladurée. I opted for the Les Incroyables box this time around. Aren't the silver clovers charming? Chocolate Santo Domingo and Rose Bubblegum were the new flavors we tried. The Chocolate Santo Domingo is divine especially if you enjoy dark chocolate. I wasn't as crazy about the marshmallow filling or sweetness of the Bubblegum.
The pretty orchids that we've been enjoying on our dining table thanks to hubby's green thumb and TLC.
My favorite club sandwich in NYC is from Mini Express in the Chinatown Arcade.
Yes it is a Chinese restaurant and their club sandwich rocks.

Eye Candy : Chen Kun for Van Cleef & Arpels

October 12, 2012

Van Cleef & Arpels recently introduced a contemporary version of their signature Pierre Arpels watch in a campaign lensed by Chen Man featuring Chinese actor Chen Kun. This iconic timepiece was originally created in 1949 by Pierre Arpels for himself. It was initially only reproduced for select members of his social circle and in 1971 was commercially released as part of the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels Watchmaking collection. I'm going to fangirl for just a moment and mention that I am swooning over how handsome Chen Kun looks in these photos.

Through My Lens : Disney World

October 9, 2012

Here are some photos from our recent Disney World vacation. We first visited there on our honeymoon and thought it would be nice to revisit for our 10 year anniversary. It's one of those places where you can just relax, have fun and feel like a kid again. We got incredibly lucky with the weather. Even though it was rather hot we didn't get hit with any rain. The Magic Kingdom was decorated with a festive fall theme. Highlights included colorful parades and various character meetups including Winnie the Pooh and Tigger who we also got to dance with. Hubby bought me pink sequin Minnie Ears which I wore on our park visits. They're quite fab. The "It's a Small World" ride still makes me smile. We enjoyed the night time fireworks display and the artistic candy creations of Miyuki among other things at Epcot. It was awesome to find Babycakes, one of my NYC faves in Downtown Disney. We also attended Cirque du Soleil La Nouba which was excellent.

Eye Candy : Dévoilée

October 5, 2012

I know I promised to share some vacation photos but I just haven't been able to finish editing them so they'll have to wait. In the meantime, here is a gorgeous editorial that I came across recently. These stunning images are an absolute visual dream. The story is entitled Dévoilée which means unveiled.

October 2, 2012

Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons because they both feel like they're all about transition and renewal. While the almost summer-like temps in NYC this week would suggest otherwise, the Autumn season has arrived and it's great.

Disney World was fun. It was hot in Florida and I didn't feel sick but once. I'm in the process of editing my photos to share. It's good to be back and I look forward to catching up with everyone soon.
