Happy Holidays

December 23, 2013

I'm signing off for the holidays but before I go, I just wanted to take a moment to wish you al the happiest of holidays. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope this will be a time of warmth and wonder with your loved ones. Be safe and happy my friends! This year seriously feels like it's flown by and I'm so grateful for the time you've spent with me here. Let's connect again in the new year.

Christmas At Home

December 20, 2013

Living in New York City is great but one thing you don't really have in a 1BR Manhattan apartment is a ton of space. So while it would be cool to go all out on Christmas decorating, I keep it simple and easily storable instead. We have a cute 2.5 foot high pink tinsel tree that sits on our dining table. We don't usually eat on there but that's a story for another day. Hubster is awesome for letting me have a pink Christmas tree cause he knows how happy it makes me. Our stockings get hung on either end of our bookcase. Do you decorate for the holidays? How do you add your festive touches?

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to read and comment on the post about my health the other day. I know it's not what I usually blog about but it's a reality I needed to acknowledge. I tend to be the sort who internalizes things especially when I'm unwell and it's not the healthiest thing to do. Opening up about my condition was actually quite cathartic and I truly appreciate all your kind words and support.

Gift Guide : For The Host or Hostess

December 19, 2013

Today's holiday gift guide has picks for the host or hostess. I think edible presents are always fun and appropriate as are home or entertaining related items. Is there something you usually like to give as host/hostess gifts?

Congratulations to Mandy at Lavenderlilac Dream for being the lucky winner of the Blue Nile necklace!

All I Want For Christmas...

December 18, 2013

I don't really talk about it much but the truth is I've probably had very few days where I've been completely healthy in about 2 years now. This has been something that has been tough to come to terms with cause it feels like I'm acknowledging that my body has been broken. I eat well and and I take care of myself so this struggle has been both frustrating and a real wake up call.

I was recovering from a wrist injury when I first started this blog. Those of you who've been with me for awhile will remember my bout with vertigo and tinnitus in the spring of 2012. That was a particularly low point since the condition left me bedridden and feeling like a shell of myself for the better part of a month. I still shudder to think at how sick to my stomach the mere sound of running water would make me for awhile and it really bites when laying down makes you even dizzier than standing up. After 6 months of Chinese herbal medicine treatments, I was able to recover from most of my symptoms though I did feel like a relapse might hit me early this past Spring. I was able to fend it off but I'd be lying if I told you that I don't live in perpetual fear of it coming back at any time. Since no doctor was able to diagnose me, I self-diagnosed myself and my ailments sounded like they could be due to a magnesium deficiency. I've been taking magnesium supplements twice daily along with epsom baths twice a week and it's been working so I'm sticking with it. Hydrating liberally and sleeping adequately helps as well. I've also continued to limit the time I spend on the computer since I found that prolonged exposure does trigger dizziness in me. That's not really an ideal scenario when you blog but it's necessary in my case. I don't know if I'll ever be able to completely kick this but I'm sure going to keep trying.

At the same time, I was also slowly developing a condition called adhesive capsulitis, better known as frozen shoulder. If I wasn't constantly dizzy and throwing up, I may have had a better realization of what was happening but the fact that I had something else wrong with me was just too much to process so I shielded myself with denial instead. By the time I was finally ready to deal with it, I couldn't even lift my left arm up halfway or reach around my back and the simple act of getting dressed had become excruciatingly painful. My doctor told me that it was bad but I could recover with physical therapy. It took 10 months of physical therapy and home exercise to regain my range of motion and become pain-free, well sort of anyway. There's still an ongoing presence of pain in my left shoulder and in my arm at times that reminds me that this condition can be recurrent. To prevent this, I still do maintenance exercises daily. I've been told the pain will go away eventually and I'm quite ready for that.

Of course it would be my luck that I re-injured my wrist towards the end of rehabbing my shoulder and ended up with a torn tendon. I wore a brace for 6 weeks while it healed before 8 weeks of physical therapy sessions. It still feels a tad prone to injury so I'm extremely careful and try not lift anything too heavy with my left hand. I also wear a brace on it when I sleep most nights to prevent it from turning and to keep myself from rolling or sleeping on it. Yes that has happened and it's no fun.

And then there's the ankle that I sprained on the way to my last therapy session for my shoulder. The irony of that is not lost on me. I was trying to avoid someone biking on the sidewalk and ended up spraining multiple ligaments and tearing tendons in my ankle. I had treatment and quite a few setbacks with this one. It was probably my own fault for walking too much on it before I should've and just kept re-aggravating the condition. I am unfortunately back in the brace and trying again to heal the torn tendons. The doctor has told me that if it doesn't heal this time, it will have to be surgically repaired and I'm trying my best to avoid that. This means laying off walking on it as much as possible for now. It's a good thing it's winter so I won't want to be out and it really hurts too much at the moment anyway.

If only good health came in a box that's really all I'd want this Christmas and many more to come. I realize it's not that easy and this will be another Christmas that I'm not completely well. While I'm accepting that for now, I'm also making a promise to myself to continue to dedicate myself to getting back to 100% or as close as possible. It's not always easy to stay positive when you're unwell and there are days when I just feel utterly defeated. I have to just keep reminding myself I could have worse things wrong with me and I'm lucky for that. I was once a real baby when it came to pain but since becoming a chronic pain sufferer, I'm so used to it that I hardly notice it anymore. If you've actually read this far, I didn't mean for this post to be a downer by any means. I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible gift that good health truly is. If you're lucky enough to enjoy it, make sure you hold onto to it.

Eye Candy : Share Happiness with Elle Korea

December 16, 2013

Elle Korea's signature charity project "Share Happiness" brings together 50 celebrities and 48 brands this year to help raise funds to aid women and children in need. The photos from the campaign which feature a range of concepts appear in this month's issue of the magazine. These are some of my favorite images from the pictorial. The first photo of Han Chae Young otherwise known as Korea's Barbie doll has such a fantastic spirt of fun and glamour. The gorgeous actress gave birth to her first child in August and is currently appearing in the drama Pretty Man alongside Jang Geun Suk and IU.

Shoe Crush : Skipperdee Flats

December 13, 2013

These Skipperdee flats from Anthropologie look like they could be the perfect holiday party shoe for those of us who can't wear heels. The chic silhouette has a slightly retro-glamorous feel and the festive array of colors and textures they come in means there's something for everyone. I'm quite partial to the red glitter pair and now that they're on sale for $59.95, I think I may need to grab them. Which pair would you pick?

Blue Nile Gift Guide And Necklace Giveaway

December 6, 2013
Blue Nile Review, Blue Nile Jewelry

If I had any type of preference when it comes to jewelry, I'd say it'd be an inclination towards necklaces. They're the item of jewelry I wear and own the most of. I usually prefer pendant styles though I have recently discovered a penchant for statement necklaces as well. The newest addition to my collection is this pretty sterling silver branch necklace which was gifted to me by Blue Nile. It's become a fast favorite since the modern chic aesthetic of this delicate style makes it such a versatile piece that works well with both casual and dressy outfits.

Style Crush : Keira Knightley

December 5, 2013

Keira Knightley proves just how cool and down to earth she is when she wore this Chanel Haute Couture dress for the third time to the SeriousFun Children's Network Gala in London earlier this week. She paired the petal pink ballet inspired tulle dress with a delicately embellished sheer long sleeved top and strappy gold Jimmy Choo sandals. This dress made it's debut at a pre-BAFTA party in 2008 and she wore it again when she married James Righton this past May. When you have a dress this fabulous, why not wear it again and again especially if you can style it differently each time. The third time is a charm as this latest iteration looks so chic and romantically elegant. Which look is your favorite?

There's still time to enter our  iPad mini giveaway and make sure you stop by tomorrow for a fun new giveaway!

Recent Loves

November 25, 2013

Bourjois Rouge Edition Brun Cosmopolitan : I tend to think that a darker lip is appropriate even for daytime during the cooler months. This sophisticated chocolate brown shade wears as a lustrous burgundy on my lips. I'm a big fan of this lipstick's rich pigmentation, creamy texture and moisturizing long wear as well as it's inexpensive price. I'm wearing it here.

Demalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque : This moisturizing mask which contains concentrated vitamins and antioxidants is a real skin saver whenever my complexion feels dull or dehydrated. It's soothing to my sensitive skin and leaves it feeling incredibly replenished, smooth and radiant. I sometimes use this before a night out or an event.

Target Mossimo Solid Beanie : I'm definitely a hat person all year round and when it's cold, I'm all about beanies. I picked up this slouchy beanie during a trip to Target last month and it's been a favorite of late. It's cozy and warm and I love the soft burgundy color and textured metallic flecks.

These are my recent loves. What do you think and do tell me about yours.

Eye Candy : 11 of 16 Muses for Harper's Bazaar

November 22, 2013

These stunning portraits featuring a number of notable Korean actresses was part of an editorial entitled 16 Muses that appeared in the August 2012 issue of Harper's Bazaar Korea. So much prettiness and luminous skin here.

Shoe Crush : Sam Edelman Petty Boot

November 20, 2013
Sam Edelman Petty Boot

These Sam Edelman Petty Booties have been on my radar recently. I'm a fan of skinny trousers and jeans paired with ankle boots and the clean sleek silhouette of this stylish pair looks like it can be dressed up or down easily with skirts and dresses as well. The low stacked heels also appear to be comfortable to walk around in. The only thing is I can't decide between the black or the putty. And then I discovered it comes in a host of other colors like burgundy. I really need to think about this. Are you a fan of ankle boots? Which color would you get?

The winner of my blog anniversary giveaway is Jane. Congratulations Jane!

Review : Born Pretty Watch

November 18, 2013

My everyday watch is a Cartier Roadster (with a pink face) and I'd been looking to add a weekend watch to my wardrobe so my interest was piqued when I was contacted by Born Pretty to review one of their women's watches. Their selection of watch styles and astonishingly low prices amazed me. Most of the watches are under $10 with none topping $35. I chose a jelly watch in mint. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that the feel and quality of the watch doesn't reflect the $5.99 price tag. It's lightweight and the oversized face and rose gold tone dials along with the rubbery silicon band give the watch both a classic and sporty vibe. I was concerned it might be too big which is a common problem for me with watches cause despite being 5'6" I have crazy small wrists. It's a little loose on the last hole but it fits. The only gripe I have is that the buckle is silver instead of rose gold but that's something I can live with and no one's going to be looking at the underside of my wrist anyway except the hubster maybe. I've been wearing it on and off for a few weeks and I really like the pretty pop of color it adds to my outfits.

With the holidays around the corner, it got me to thinking that a watch would make a terrific gift or stocking stuffer. Born Pretty carries a range of styles for both ladies and men including fashionable bracelet watches and sporty LED watches.

I should also mention that they offer free worldwide shipping. And if all that isn't enough, Born Pretty is generously extending a special 10% discount to rolala loves readers on top of their already inexpensive prices with the code ROWENALC10

Do you wear a watch? Do you tend to wear different watches with different outfits?

Disclosure: I was sent a watch for the purposes of this review. I was not provided any other compensation and all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Eye Candy : Joo Sang Wook for Allure

November 15, 2013

Joo Sang Wook is an alluring man in this Allure Korea editorial photographed by Kim Young Jun. He just came off a run in the drama The Good Doctor and can currently be seen in the film Punisher in which he plays a man who seeks revenge on the high school bully who he believes ruined his life. Sounds interesting. I was quite impressed by his intense performance in the dark crime drama Special Affairs Team TEN. The handsome actor whose nickname is Chairman always appears so polished and serious on onscreen so it was fun to see how talkative and hilariously goofy he actually is in real life when he was a guest on Running Man recently. I don't know about that cape he's sporting in the fourth pic but this man can seriously rock a suit.

Color Love : Blush

November 13, 2013

Pale pink aka blush is one of the hot colors of this season and I couldn't be more happy because that means it's easy to find now. A spot of this pretty pretty color can really bring a much needed lift to all the darker colors usually worn at this time. I'm quite close to adding the camera bag to my wardrobe. It's so cute and just $22! And I'm seriously thinking about the tulle dress especially after I saw thisDo you wear this color? What do you pair it with? I like how it contrasts with grey and black and it's lovely with beige and burgundy as well.

Your Bijoux Box Review

November 11, 2013

Subscription boxes are quite popular these days and Your Bijoux Box pushes the concept forward delivering 2 -3 pieces of hand curated on trend jewelry straight to your door every month. I received the October Bijoux Box. Read on to see what I thought.

Eye Candy : Kim So Yeon for Grazia

November 8, 2013

Kim So Yeon shows off her alluring side in Grazia Korea. This smoldering black and white editorial also showcases the actress's killer legs. It's such a great contrast from her last pictorial for Elle Korea which was straight up pretty and feminine. I still haven't watched Two Weeks but I heard she put in a representative performance for her role of a righteous prosecutor in the drama.

Style Crush : Kate Beckinsale

November 6, 2013

There were so many beautifully turned out celebrities at the recent LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala but one style standout for me was Kate Beckinsale who looked absolutely resplendent in a shimmery strapless Gucci gown with an embellished waist detail. The pale blue color of the dress which was accented with Swarovski crystals was dazzling. Her accessories included Neil Lane jewelry and a silver clutch and sparkly nude sandals by Jimmy Choo. Her hair and makeup were flawless and enviable as usual. Certain celebrities just know what works on them and Kate is definitely one of them. What do you think of this look?

Thank you to everyone for your sweet comments on my last post! I really have the most awesome blogger friends.

A Blog Anniversary and A Giveaway

November 4, 2013

I'm really quite terrible at remembering my blog's anniversary for some reason. I had it in my mind that it was in November when it was actally October. Anyway, I'm a month late but I still wanted to acknowledge the milestone since it's been two years that I started on this journey. I'm so happy to still be here and incredibly grateful for all the friendships and opportunities that blogging has brought me.

This has been such a fun creative outlet to share things that I love and I hope to continue doing it as long as I enjoy it. What I've learned is that blogging should never be a chore and you shouldn't be afraid to be yourself. The biggest compliment I ever get from people who know me is how my blog writing voice sounds exactly like me. I've really enjoyed getting to know you all through your comments here and your blogs and I find that to be one of the most rewarding aspects. I was seriously overwhelmed and touched by the generous outpouring of encouragement when I was ill last year. It meant the world and really helped me get past a pretty difficult time.

Another thing I've learned is that you just can't fake it when it comes to blogging. That's why to date, I've done exactly one outfit post. They're just not my thing but I will pop up here occasionally. Along the way, I've shown you all my bookshelf, the contents of my purse, the sweaters in my closetand my abnormally large mitten collection amongst other things. I hope to get back to more of these posts soon and I also have a few new features planned. Is there anything you'd like to see more of?

I wanted to celebrate and thank my readers with a little giveaway. Up for grabs is a pair of BaubleBar Chevron Studs in Orange. If you'd like a chance to win these fun little pretties, just hit up the Rafflecopter widget below. This is an international giveaway that everyone is welcome to join. It's sponsored by me and will run through November 18th. Good luck!

Review : Resvology Age Corrective Eye Cream

October 30, 2013
Resvology Age Corrective Eye Cream Review, Eye Cream, Eye Cream Review

One thing I'm always grateful for is the fact that I learned I should be be using eye cream at a young age and the preventative effects have paid off. Now that I'm older I don't really have wrinkles around my eyes though I do get dark circles from time to time which is vexing. Since it's a concern I'm looking to address, I'm always on the lookout for eye care products that can help to minimize them while continuing to keep wrinkles at bay. And I'm hoping that Resvology Age Corrective Eye Cream could be one that makes a difference. After all it is the 2013 winner of the HBA Global New Product Showcase "People's Choice Award" and the HBA Global "The Best of SPLASH Award".

Product Claims: The Age Corrective Eye Cream is a hydrating and rejuvenating anti-aging eye cream infused with active peptides, botanicals and the multi-patented 4-AR Molecule, clinically proven to help fuel healthy gene activity by 330%. Safe for all skin types, this lightweight formula helps minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and crow's feet, improves skin's firmness, deflates puffiness and brightens dark circles.

Key Ingredients: 4-AR Molecule, Targeted Peptides, Vitamins A, E and C Ester, Panthenol, Barley, Sandalwood and Olive extracts. It's also worth noting that this product is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, not tested on animals and free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, triclosan, phthalates and GMOs.

Packaging: A sleek white and silver bottle with a pump. This is actually my preferred type of dispenser for eye cream since it's the most hygienic. It can also be easily opened so no product will be wasted when you get to the end.
$89 for 0.5 fl oz /15 ml

My Impressions: It has a nice lightweight yet emollient texture and is unscented which are qualities I usually look for in an eye cream. The cream absorbs quickly and I didn't have any irritation issues which sometimes occur when trying new eye products since my skin tends to be sensitive. I've been using it for just under two weeks now and I feel like my eye area is well hydrated and smoother as a result. I think I will have to use it for longer to speak of the wrinkle and dark circle reducing effects but I have noticed less puffiness around my eyes when I wake up in the morning so that's promising. It's too soon for me to say if I would purchase this but I would consider it if I continue to see positive results. It's a tad pricey but I only need one pump for each application. Besides I've paid more for eye cream and I'm willing to invest in good skincare as long as it works.

You can learn more about this eye cream as well as the entire line of Resvology anti-aging face and body products on their website and be sure to friend them on Facebook for the latest news and promos.

What are your eye area concerns? Do you use eye cream? Care to share your favorites?

Disclosure: I was sent a sample of this eye cream for the purposes of this review. I was not provided any other compensation and all opinions expressed are 100% my own.
