Eye Candy : Kim Sun Ah, Lee Dong Wook, et al for High Cut

December 27, 2011
Hope everyone who celebrated had a most magical Christmas. Mine was just great and I'm not quite ready for the good times to end so I'm extending the holiday through this week and enjoying it all just a little while longer. In the meantime, entertainment artists from Korea's King Kong management agency recently got together to shoot this festive pictorial for High Cut magazine. That's some pretty people in elegant party wear. Enjoy your last week of 2011 and I will try to catch up with you all soon!

Happy Holidays

December 23, 2011

Thank you so much for your kindness and the time you've spent here with me!
May the happiness and cheer of the holiday season be yours through the new year!

Eye Candy : Su Ae with Dolce & Gabbana for Vogue

December 22, 2011
Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana recently opened a flagship shop in the Cheongdam province of South Korea. They also made time to shoot a Vogue pictorial with actress Su Ae who is currently appearing in the Korean drama, A Thousand Days' Promise. The contrast of the glamourous clothes and makeup against the deconstructed newsprint covered backdrops is pretty cool.

Style Crush : Sandra Bullock

December 21, 2011

Sandra Bullock looked smokin' hot rocking a body conscious Alexander McQueen black satin suit cinched with a sculpted belt at the New York premiere of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. A nude lace top kept the plunging neckline decent while a sparkly clutch and chunky rings completed the look. Her makeup consisted of smoky eyes and a berry lip and her sleek locks coordinated with the sleekness of her outfit. She plays it safe sometimes but it's nice to see her totally working this edgier yet sophisticated look.

Through My Lens : Rena

December 20, 2011
"Be pretty if you can, be witty if you must, but be gracious if it kills you."
~ Elsie de Wolfe

I just love this quote! More about Rena, my doll and photography muse pictured here in a future post. Let's just say that I like to live out my fantasies of laying around in pretty clothes while eating macarons through her. And those are mini Pierre Hermé macarons by the way.

Eye Candy : Louis Vuitton Spring 2012

December 19, 2011

Louis Vuitton's 2012 Spring Campaign is sweet like candy. Photographer Steven Meisel captures Daria Strokous and Kati Nescher adorned in frothy pastel outfits paired with confectionery like accessories enjoying sundaes at a luxurious pink ice cream parlor. These ultra girly whimsical images are fitting given the pretty and lacey spring collection that LV trotted out on the runway complete with a dreamy carousel centerpiece. I'm finding myself needing a dose of spring since the frigid chill of winter seems to have officially arrived in New York this past weekend.

Eye Candy : Chen Kun, Kwai Lun Mei and Mavis Fan for Esquire

December 16, 2011
I have to admit I love it whenever Chen Kun has a new film coming coming out cause it pretty much guarantees there will be a stream of pictorials tied to his promotional activities. I mean, more photos of Chen Kun is never really a bad thing. He is joined by two of his co-stars from The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, Kwai Lun Mei and Mavis Fan for this Esquire China editorial. Unlike his edgier Men's Uno cover/pictorial, these photos are more languidly urbane. l'm quite liking the monochrome and the trio's sculpted coiffures. Kwai Lun Mei is totally rocking those shaved sides.

Food & Drink : Macaron

December 15, 2011

From Wikipedia: A macaron is a sweet confectionery made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring. The macaron is commonly filled with buttercream or jam filling sandwiched between two cookies. It's name is derived from an Italian word "maccarone" or maccherone". This word is itself derived from ammacare, meaning crush or beat, used here in reference to the almond past which is the principal ingredient. It is meringue-based: made from a mixture of egg whites, almond flour. The confectionery is characterized by it's smooth domed top, ruffled circumference (referred to as the "foot"), and flat base. It is mildly sweet and easily melts in the mouth.

Style Crush : Diane Kruger

December 14, 2011

I've always felt that Diane Kruger has a real knack for channeling old Hollywood glamour. Here she kicks the little black dress up a notch in a Miu Miu silk crepe midi length dress beautifully detailed with three quarter floral embroidered sleeves, a keyhole back and ribbon belted waist.  She accessorizes with an oversized Miu Miu clutch in brown suede and black strappy Jimmy Choo Louisa sandals. Her softly waved hair and flawless makeup completes this picture of knockout retro-ladylike elegance.

Shoe Crush : Miu Miu

December 13, 2011
These sparkly Miu Miu Mary Janes are seriously fabulous! I want!

Eye Candy : Song Hye Kyo for Vogue

December 12, 2011
Paris seems to be quite the popular destination for pictorial shoots lately. Not that I really mind. Like Lee Dong Wook and Han Ga In, Song Hye Kyo also lights up the city of lights with this stunning editorial for Vogue. The image taken on the iconic staircase of 31 Rue Cambon, the apartment belonging to the legendary Coco Chanel is probably my favorite. What sets it apart is how this editorial series dramatically highlights the beauty of Paris by night. The cobblestone streets and one of the famous fountains at the Place de la Concorde are getting quite the glamorous lift. It's likely this shoot took place back in October when the actress/model attended the Chanel Couture show at the personal invitation of Karl Lagerfeld himself.

Through My Lens

December 9, 2011

Just a little update on my Etsy print shop. I've added ten more prints and doubled my inventory this week. Amazingly I don't actually just photograph flowers and my dolls though it may seem that way.  In real life, I photograph people the most and the food that I eat haha. So in the ten days I've been in business, I've made six sales already ~ three through Etsy and three direct sales. I should mention that I can also accept direct orders and custom requests. The 20% off and free shipping on US orders promotion will be running through 12/13. The link to my shop is on my sidebar. Thanks and have a most lovely weekend!

Eye Candy : Chen Kun for Men's Uno

December 8, 2011
Actor Chen Kun covers China's Men's Uno magazine. His latest film The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate will be released in Asia next week. Chen Kun happens to be a favorite of mine so I always look forward to seeing him in anything. He's not only an incredible actor with the most expressive and soulful eyes but also an accomplished singer possessing a most mellifluous voice. On top of all that he's just positively gorgeous in an otherworldly kind of way. Okay I'm done gushing now.

Dine Out : Le Bernardin

December 7, 2011

The hubster and I recently lunched at the famed Le Bernardin restaurant in celebration of his birthday. Everything from the recently renovated sleek yet elegantly appointed dining room to the impeccably attentive and pleasantly informative service was exactly what we expected from the four star fine dining establishment that it is. The options for lunch are a $45 three course City Harvest Menu with $5 from very meal donated to the City Harvest charity, a $70 three course Prix-Fixe and an eight course Chef's Tasting Menu for $190. Eight courses is just too much for us especially at lunch so we both opted for the three course prix-fixe at $70 which gave us a chance to experience a range of flavors as well as textures. The food service was well paced, the presentation artful and the portion sizes were spot on. It's been said that Chef Eric Ripert is peerless at elevating seafood to an art and I can definitely understand why now. All in all, a stellar culinary experience and one which we look forward to repeating some time in the future.

Style Wise : J. Crew Collection Winter Look Book

December 6, 2011
J. Crew can pretty much do no wrong in my book lately and these classically chic and sophisticated looks from their J. Crew Collection 2011-2012 Winter Holiday Look Book have me oohing and aahing. I'm loving the dichotomy of the very Chanel-esque shimmer tweed Cherie jacket paired with slim cropped twills and New Balance sneakers and I can totally picture enjoying afternoon tea in the ladylike medallion jacquard shell and tuxedo pants. This seasonally updated ranged of limited edition pieces features exquisite designs in luxurious fabrics. The rest of the look book is here.

Interiors : Dream Kitchen

Through My Lens

November 30, 2011

Just wanted to share some personal news today. I've opened my photography print shop on Etsy. For the next two weeks I will be offering a 20% discount and free domestic US shipping. Please do stop on over and check it out. And if you like what you see, please spread the word.  I specialize in floral and botanical photos and also vignette images of my dollies and special muses Rena and Ian. Aren't they just darling? They will get their own dedicated post in the coming days. New prints will be added regularly. The shop is linked above and I've also added an Etsy link to my sidebar for easy access. Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Eye Candy : Zhou Xun for Vogue

November 29, 2011
Zhou Xun dons a feathery Emilio Pucci dress for the cover Vogue China and looks lovely in red for the accompanying pictorial. The acclaimed diminutive actress/singer with the husky voice was recently appointed as an ambassador for the Chanel brand. Karl Lagerfeld noted her strong fashion sense and described Zhou as "a synthesis of a young Coco Chanel and Ballet Troupe Zizi Jeanmaier."

Cook : Cacio E Pepe

November 28, 2011

I'm a big fan of simple recipes consisting of a few choice ingredients that are typically in my pantry anyway especially when they taste as good as this elemental Roman pasta dish. Cacio e Pepe is literally "cheese and pepper" pasta. It gets a hit of spiciness from the cracked black pepper toasted in olive oil and it's creaminess & robust flavor from the pecorino romano. You can also mix in some fresh parmesan if you want. I usually follow this recipe and cut it in half for two 4 oz. servings. It's great on it's own or served with a side of roasted veggies.

Eye Candy : Yoo Ji Tae and Kim Hyo Jin for Harper's Bazaar

November 25, 2011
Soon to be married celebrity couple Yoo Ji Tae and Kim Hyo Jin recently posed for a wedding themed pictorial for Harper's Bazaar. The two who have been openly dating for 4 years actually met 9 years ago on an advertising shoot and this is only the first photo shoot they've done together since. Yoo Ji Tae who is best known for his role in Oldboy spoke glowingly about his model turned actress bride-to-be, confessing that he used to look at pictures from their first shoot together for encouragement and sincerely hoped that they would collaborate again on a photo shoot in another 9 years. Their wedding is set for December 2 which also happens to be the couple's dating anniversary. All the best to them!

Covet : Piaget

November 23, 2011

I'm loving and totally coveting this Piaget Creative Collection Limelight Garden Party ring. The exquisite white gold tourmaline and diamond creation is inspired by a cupcake. Just how delicious is that?

Eye Candy : Shin Min Ah for Rag & Bone

November 22, 2011
Everyone's favourite Gumiho, Shin Min Ah is the first Asian celebrity to join the ongoing D.I.Y. project of fashion label Rag & Bone. The concept of the project has each of it's models interpreting the brand in her own way and is photographed sans hair & make-up, stylist, and professional lighting. Her photos which were taken in Busan came out looking pretty fantastic. I think Cha Dae Woong would approve. Shin becomes the eighth model for the campaign which has previously featured models, including, Lily Aldridge, Karolina Kurkova, Carolyn Murphy, Sasha Pivovarova, and more. The rest of her photos and video from the project can be found on Rag & Bone's D.I.Y. page.

T.O.P and Chuck Bass : Celebrity Lookalikes?

November 21, 2011

Okay so it might just be me but I've long thought that Big Bang rapper T.O.P bears a certain resemblance to Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl aka Ed Westwick. It's probably not so much that they share the same features but something in their overall appearance, character and manner.  It's no wonder that I happen to think that Chuck is the most attractive male character on the fictional Upper East Side. If they ever decide to do an Asian re-make of Gossip Girl, I know who I'd cast as Chuck Bass.

Style Wise : Club Monaco Pre-Spring 2012 Look Book

November 17, 2011
Winter is just nipping at the doorstep and Club Monaco is already prepping their pre-spring 2012 collection to hit the shelves in January. I'm totally fine with skipping past the frost of winter onto the crispness of pre-spring. I haven't been feeling Club Monaco's styles for quite some time but just looking at the muted prints and subtle color palette of these wearable styles is chasing some of the winter chill away already. These are some of the looks I liked in particular. The rest can be viewed here.

Eye Candy : Park Jin Hee for InStyle

November 15, 2011
The theme of this shoot with actress Park Jin Hee is supposed to be a lovely woman on a warm autumn afternoon. She certainly does look lovely though I'm not really feeling the autumn vibe. The lace detail on that blazer is totally fabulous.

Style Wise : Jenny Packham Bridal

November 14, 2011
Since I'm closing in on another wedding anniversary in a few months, it's not like I'll be getting married anytime soon but that doesn't stop me from admiring wedding dresses especially when they're as stunning as these from British designer Jenny Packham's Bridal Fall 2012 collection. Thanks to the vintage inspired styling and ornate embellishments these gowns are so exquisitely feminine and delicate. These are just a few of my favorites. I'm partial to sleeves cause my own dress had lace cap sleeves. The rest is here.

Eye Candy : Kim Sun Ah for W

November 11, 2011
It can be easy to forget how attractive Kim Sun Ah really is since she has had to downplay her looks for more than a few acting roles. Here she epitomizes understated elegance modeling Emporio Armani’s fall/winter watch collection for W.

Style Wise : Rebecca Minkoff

November 9, 2011

I have a tendency to be rather lazy when it comes to switching up my handbags so I generally end up wearing the same one for at least a month before changing it up. Since I'm not carrying my DSLR around as much these days, I've been into cross body styles again and totally rediscovered my love for my Rebecca Minkoff Vixen bag. With all it's pockets, the bag is super functional and it looks great with any outfit or coat. It can also be converted to a shoulder style as well. So I think I just might be sticking with this one for awhile longer...

Eye Candy : Han Ga In for InStyle

November 8, 2011
Actress Han Ga In channels 70's retro glam in this pictorial shot in Paris for InStyle Korea.  There seem to be a number of spreads with a Parisian backdrop lately. Wonder if they ran into Lee Dong Wook. I'm really liking her makeup and big floppy hat.

Covet : Jewelmint Silver Zip Bracelet

November 7, 2011

I'm absolutely loving this Jewelmint Silver Zip Bracelet. I just wish it were sized smaller for my crazy dainty wrists which aren't even 6". I happen to like my bracelets to be somewhat fitted and not that I really want bigger wrists but it would be nice if it was easier to find bracelets that don't totally fall all over my hand. Le sigh...

Dine Out : Torrisi Italian Specialties

November 3, 2011
It's a good thing I was made aware of how to secure a spot for the dining experience at Torrisi Italian Specialties before actually having dinner there last week. The much vaunted tiny Nolita eatery which operates as a sandwich counter for lunch does not take traditional reservations. Instead they start taking names at the door at 5:30pm for their three nightly dinner seatings at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 and these go quickly. For reference, the line was about nine people deep when I arrived there at 4:45 and there were at least double that number behind me by 5:30. Their $50 pp prix fixe which changes daily consists of five courses of homestyle Italian-American fare with a contemporary nod. The constants from what I understand would be the thick slabs of garlic toast accompanied by warm house made mozzarella that commence the meal and the finale of palate cleansing ices (lemon flavor on my visit) and selection of Italian pastries. The only decision you're tasked with as a diner is your entrée selection. We had a choice between cod and duck. Everything else will be brought to your table. Just be aware that there are no substitutions. The food was both hearty and tasty. My only complaint would be that more than a few dishes were a touch too salty. The mozzarella just might've ruined all other mozzarella for me and the rainbow cookies were delectably moist and bursting with more almond flavor than any other I've had before. Though we enjoyed our meal, I'm not sure I would do it again. However we do want to return for lunch and try their sandwiches which I've heard are superb. I wish I could've taken better pictures but they have a no photography policy so I had to snap quickly and discreetly. The restaurant is currently undergoing renovations and expanding the existing space and it looks like their policies and menus may also be going through some changes when that happens.

Eye Candy : Han Hyo Joo for Harper's Bazaar

November 2, 2011
Han Hyo Joo is one actress whose star has really been on the rise in the past couple of years.  Shedding her usual bright and happy image, she exudes a sense of mature femininity in this shoot for the November issue of Harper's Bazaar Korea. She totally looks like she could be Song Hye Gyo's sister in the last pic.

Lee Seung Gi Tonight

November 1, 2011

Lee Seung Gi's new album Tonight is now available on iTunes.  With everything he does these days, it's sometimes easy to forget that he started out as a singer.  While his music isn't anything groundbreaking, it's easy on the ears and he has a great voice. Oh yeah, he just happens to pretty cute as well.

Style Wise : J. Crew

October 31, 2011
Oh J.Crew, I don't think I can ever quit you, especially when you continue to turn out fabulous looks like this that are totally up my alley. Absolutely loving the silhouettes and colors of these two outfits!

Eye Candy : Li Bing Bing for Cosmopolitan

October 28, 2011
Li Bing Bing seems to be covering just about every magazine in Asia these days but I found her photos for Cosmopolitan China to be by far the most visually compelling especially the black + white images. The actress who appeared in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was recently cast as Ada Wong in the next Resident Evil movie. I'm not sure if I'm more amazed that they're still making those or that they actually cast a Chinese actor to play a Chinese character. Ada Wong was totally badass in the RE games. While I like Li Bing Bing, nothing she's ever done leads me to believe she can pull this off but I sure hope she does.

Cook : Korean Jjajangmyun

October 26, 2011
I first learned about Jjajangmyun after seeing it consumed in a number of Korean dramas and it looked so tasty. Jjajangmyun is actually an adaptation of Chinese Zha Jiang Mian which literally means "fried sauce noodles". While the preparation is similar, the taste is quite different and both are delicious in their own way.  As it usually goes with food that fascinates me, I must try to make it myself and this was quite easy once you get past all the dicing.  I found a recipe online and just adapted it to our household's tastes.

Dine Out : Takashi

October 20, 2011
Takashi, Takashi Yakiniku, Takashi NYC, Takashi Restaurant, Takashi Review
niku-uni appetizer ::  super fresh and tasty

Tucked away in a little corner of the West Village is Takashi, an intimate dining establishment that specializes in the Japanese version of Korean barbecue known as yakiniku.  Beef or rather all manner of cow is the focus here as the restaurant engages in the practice of horumon which lets no part get wasted. This means a selection of various offal meats are offered on the menu alongside more traditional cuts like kalbi short ribs or kobe steak. The appetizers are also imaginatively meaty with one that features sea urchin atop a piece of raw chuck flap steak meant to be enveloped in seaweed and a single shiso leaf, dipped in soy sauce & wasabi and consumed in a single bite. Rice and veggie accompaniments can be ordered as extras but it's really all about the meat here, the quality of which was quite excellent.

Dine Out : Old Homestead

October 11, 2011
Old Homestead New York, Old Homestead Restaurant, Old Homestead Review

Old Homestead in the Meatpacking District offers their version of a recession special called the “Burger Diamond” lunch. Featuring a burger trio of kobe, filet mignon and sirloin, freshly ground to order, each burger is about 3 oz. and comes with different complementary gourmet toppings. They're accompanied by a Caesar salad, homemade tater tots and a secret recipe chipotle ketchup. And if that's not enough, you also get your choice of a glass of California chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon or a beer.  This $22 deal is available on weekdays between 12:00 - 4:00pm and 1:00 - 4:00pm on weekends. I found both the food and service to be very good.
