Dine Out : Perry St

Perry St New York

Ever since I dined at Perry St a few years ago, I've been meaning to return. I had a chance when I met up with a good friend who was in town for the day recently. This sleek and elegant Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant offers a view of the Hudson River along with it's contemporary French and Asian accented American cuisine. We happened to be there during Summer Restaurant Week where 3 courses can be had for just $25 at lunch but Perry St also has a reasonably priced seasonal tasting menu lunch all year round. For our starters we got the heirloom tomato salad with raspberry, serrano and basil and shaved salmon sashimi with chili tapioca, asian pear and lime. The presentation was artful and the mingling of flavors in each dish was surprising and good. We both opted for the roasted hake with miso yuzu glaze and baby bok choi as our entrée. It was my first time having hake and it's a flaky white fish that's similar to cod. This dish was nice but nothing special. For dessert we tried the molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and blueberry pound cake with corn ice cream. I expected the corn ice cream to have more of a corn flavor but it was just really sweet. The molten chocolate cake was rich and decadent as it should be. I've mentioned here that I don't really eat sweets and neither of these desserts tempted me beyond a few bites. Overall the atmosphere, modern minimalist decor and service are winning. The food was balanced and tasty if not especially impressive but apparently their fried chicken is where it's at so maybe I'd come back to try that.

Yes, I remember that you don't really go in for sweets. I must confess a weakness for sweets but I do my best to be disciplined about them as I believe too much sugar is really bad for the health (I think we talk about this before, I also avoid drinks with sugar).

Anyhow, these images are lovely. Good to know that the service is a winning one....and let us know about fried chicken once you try that too. It seems like a good place to dine...something to keep in mind, even if it is just nice and not very impressive.

Have a great day!

That chocolate dessert looks really good to me, albeit a bit dry, but maybe that's just my imagination.

LOLZ...we're opposites, Rowena. For me, it's always all about the dessert...heehee...
Anyhoo, the place does look pretty nice. We have the same summer event that happens here, and it's always a great time to try new restaurants.

I'm amazed you're not a huge fan of sweet treats, the sound of molten chocolate cake is making me drool over just the sound of it! haha :) The design of this restaurant is wonderfully modern.

The place looks amazing Rowena and the food yummy. Too bad it wasn't special. I know that you hardly eat sugar. That's probably the reason why the desserts were so sweet :) I have stopped my sugar ban cos life's too hard not to eat it but I eat way less than before. Wish you a happy hump day!

I love reading about all these places that you dine in, Rowena and your photography always makes me feel that I am right there with you. I do frown on the portion size though, I mean they look so tiny but maybe it's because I'm a huge eater. LOL! I like that you're not into sweets, I'm not either and people always look at me funny when I say that. Most instantly jump into conclusion because I'm on a diet but truth is I just don't like it. Haha!

Well they certainly have the aesthetic down. I am not big on sweets either especially after a big meal with the exception of the Creme Brulee at Frankie's

I've never taken advantage of restaurant week but I love that you do. I'm not sure I'd like the food but the chocolate cake looks delicious {I eat sugar about once a week so one bite would make me ill - I'd suffer though}. I like the giant lights and the interior a lot.

I love the interiors! It's like a mix of 60's with hipster but done so, so tastefully. Food looks pretty decent too. Is it bad that I'm feeling hungry, even though I just had dinner?

Unfortunately I know many places where the interior is top, but the food is nothing special. Just like this one. The receptionist looks quite strange on that photo above, haha. I am not used to see this here. At least the food is photogenic! :p
