Alchemy and essential oils were central to Jill Stuart's inspiration for Fall 2017 which translated into a collection that fuses a combination of various textures, prints and lengths along with a play on layers. A sumptuously dark color palette of mostly black punctuated by metallics and occasional pops of red, blue and purple serves as the backdrop for the languid silhouettes. The collection melds retro 70's boho with Victorian details like high necklines, puffed sleeves, velvet bodices, tiered skirts, underlays and ruffles. Overall the outfits exuded a sense of diaphanous glamour and wearable edge. Standout looks for me included all the metallic Swiss dot embellished pieces as as well as the exquisitely tailored coats and jackets. The styling also provided ideas for creative ways of layering as velvet was juxtaposed with tulle, printed pussy bow blouses and knit turtlenecks were shown under dresses and corset belts worn over outerwear.
A darkly romantic beauty story complemented the fashions. Using Jill Stuart Beauty products, makeup artist Aaron de Mey came up with two distinct looks on a matte skin base. One featured a warm toned smokey cat eye paired with muted natural lips and the other, lightly defined glossy lids paired with a lustrous deep burgundy lip color. The effortlessly undone hairstyles by Didier Malige which paid homage to the New Romantics era were created by highlighting the natural texture of each model's hair by adding volume or enhancing curls or sleekness.
The collection preview held in a Financial District Skylight space was presented in two acts with the models rotating on three sets of elevated platforms. This format allowed attendees up close views of all the looks which is a reason why I tend to prefer presentations to runway shows. I also find presentations are almost always easier to photograph as well. In many cases I found myself wanting to zoom in on the makeup and the details on the outfits because they were just beautiful especially all the embroidery.
I only attended a few shows this NYFW season as I don't really care to go out much in this weather. This one was a must because my admiration for Jill Stuart's modern and feminine aesthetic goes back to when I used to frequent her shop on Greene Street. They held the best sales and some of her pieces remain wardrobe favorites that I still often wear. The New York based designer's clothing and beauty line is also quite popular in Asia, particularly in Japan and South Korea.

Morning Rowena! Im so AMAZED by all the collection, totally love it! The patterns, the textures, the fabrics, the makeup, the hairstyle, everything is totally perfect, so sweet and romantic! Looking at the looks, makes me feel very inspired. Have a food week dear! xo
I dont have much fashion sense, but I do like the makeup you pictured. Bronzey glossy lids, yes please. The clothing, yes, I like that too. But I think I will have to reevalute my taste come fall, right now I am craving spring clothes and summer.

Oh man! I can totally understand why you picked to go to her show, Rowena. Really love this collection. Although I tend to go more for the "casualness" of Alexander Wang and the likes, I can see myself wanting to try most of the pieces here. I love the sleeve details on most of the pieces, and the coats are TDF. I also love how Aaron and Didier styled the models....two thumbs up.:D Thanks for sharing, chingu, and here's to a great week ahead.
What a great looking show! Everyone looks fashionable and trendy! I'm loving the makeup looks as well! Happy Monday!
I like the metallic Swiss dots and gold accents in all the pieces.

Thanks for sharing this! What a marvelous set of photos! I didn't pay much attention to the fashion week (I just thought there were more models walking around on the street than usual), so this is an unexpected treat. Loving all those different textures of fabrics and the smokiness of the makeup looks!
What an incredible collection - possibly my favourite so far! It's delicate and yet entirely edgy; perfection! Thanks so much for sharing these images Rowena, talk about inspiring...

I honestly love all the different textures but I will be frank that the designs are not really my cup of tea. There are only a couple of pieces that I could see myself wearing but then again, I am a jeans and tee person so maybe that's why I don't get it.

Oh I had no idea you were attending FW, we should have hooked up. A few other bloggers and I were trying to get together for drinks during FW but we were all so crazy busy. But there may be some of us meeting on the 10th if you are interested.
And on my I can see why you came out for this show. Just GORGEOUS. I LOVE all of these looks and would wear almost anything int this collection. And presentations are great for photos too, you did a great job here. And thanks of the heads up on the great sales at the Greene Street store! :)

I appreciate this collection and I'd certainly wear some of these pieces without hesitation. Some people think that black is lifeless or spiritless but clearly the Jill Stuart team knows how to bring volume and vitality to dark silhouettes--the gold and red accents are my favourite + the smoky eyes. Thanks for sharing, Rowena!
OMG so beautiful collection
