Dine Out : JaJaJa

Jajaja, Jajaja New York, Jajaja Mexican, Jajaja Review

JaJaJa pronounced "hahaha" is a vegan Mexican eatery on the border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. It has received a fair amount of buzz for it's unexpected pairing of these two popular cuisines. It actually makes sense since the history of Mexican food is largely plant based. Occupying a corner space adjacent to the F train, the restaurant exudes an inviting vibe that is both laidback and peppy at the same time with it's original mosaic tiled floors, light wood decor punctuated by mint green seating.  The menu features a variety of Mexican favorites. Of course we had to try the nachos with the guacamole add on.

Jajaja's Nachos are topped with chorizo, turmeric queso fundido, fermented black beans, spicy veggie relish and sour cream. We could've had just these and been happy. They were beautifully presented and bursting with delicious flavor and a slow yet satisfying kick.  And the chorizo made from seitan actually came close to the real thing both in texture and taste. The chayote fish tacos with chipotle almond butter and pickled red onion which intermingled savory, sweet and sour weren't our favorite but the hemp and flaxseed battered chayote squash made for a suitable fish substitute. The pupusas with beans, cashew cotija, serranos, sour cream, shitake bacon and romaine lettuce were tasty and hit the spot. The service was congenial if a little scattered since they don't write down orders so there was a little confusion on our waiter's part about what we ordered at one point. I should mention that they do have a full bar that serves tequila and mezcal cocktails as well as traditional Mexican beers and spirits.  We don't drink and we definitely don't day drink so I can't speak to that. Mexican is one of our favorite cuisines and we try to eat vegetarian as much as possible. JaJaJa legitimizes vegan Mexican fusion and I'm really glad that we live close because I look forward to trying more of their menu. If you come here, be sure to get the nachos.

I feel as though there's SO much I've yet to learn about other cuisines - I didn't even know Mexican food was largely plant-based! Mmm, that mention of nachos has made my stomach rumble...

Ooo the food looks so yummy! I love learning about all these interesting eateries from you, makes me wish I lived in NYC - the only Mexican restaurants we have around here are chain restaurants :(

Honestly Rowena, you find some of the best places to eat! We love a family run Mexican restaurant here but it recently closed down because the couple retired. It's heart breaking really because it was the best in town.
