Fitness or Fashion: Should You Let Trends Dictate Your Health?

Han Hyo Joo Dazed

People are often surprised when they realize how much they are influenced by others. Society has long been built around following norms, and, despite the hard work of a lot of people, it can be difficult to escape this type of mentality, even today. Some people follow the latest fashions, while others aren’t happy unless they have the latest technology available to them, and true need is rarely a factor when it comes to making these decisions. Of course, though, this sort of thing isn’t really a problem until it starts to impact other areas of your life.

It’s very common to find people placing trends ahead of their health. Some will put off getting issues sorted out because they don’t think it’s important, while others will actively go against the recommendations of their doctors just to make sure that they can maintain their style. This is never a good or sustainable idea. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some of the most common medical tools which people will ignore in favor of fashion, providing you with alternatives which will enable you to maintain both your health and trendiness.

Glasses
Some people love wearing glasses, while other people hate them, and there are a lot of people in the world who would be a lot better off if they ignored the style issues which can come with this accessory. It can be hard to find a frame which suits your face and matches your budget, but many people don’t wear their glasses because they simply don’t like the way they feel. Thankfully, there is a simple solution to this problem; contact lenses which have been around for a long time. They have come a long way in recent years, and it’s easy to find options that are both comfortable and effective.

Hearing Aids
Hearing aids aren’t as common as glasses, but this only makes it worse when you’re given one by your doctor. The options which are offered by medical professionals tend to be quite boring devices which lack the design flare that a fashion-lover will want. The best hearing aids will rarely come from a doctor’s office, though, and it can make a lot more sense to look for an option which you can buy for yourself. Modern hearing aids are small, can be found in loads of different colors, and some will even be almost invisible when you’re wearing them.

Braces
Braces are a powerful tool when it comes to aligning your teeth. Often associated with teenagers, though, it can be hard to live with something like this if you are given them in later life. It’s rare to see professionals with something like this, and this will be on the minds of a lot of people when they are first told that they need braces to avoid problems in later life. Products like Invisalign can solve this problem, offering a solution that will not only help your teeth, but will also be almost invisible to those who don’t know what they’re looking for.

Sun Protection
This next area isn’t something which will be prescribed by your doctor, but it’s definitely one which many people ignore in favor of looking good. Keeping yourself protected from the sun is crucial, with harmful UV rays having the power to cause cancer when people spend too much time in the sun throughout their life. Shade provides some good protection and there are plenty of lightweight sunscreen products on the market which can offer the same protection without giving you that odd white cast.

Walking Support
It’s easy to see why many young people would find it hard to use a walking stick since this is an item with a strong association to older people, and it can feel strange to use something like this when people of your own age are able to walk and run without support. Of course, though, age isn’t the only factor to consider when you’re thinking about your health. There aren’t really any alternatives to walking sticks, but you can still choose one which matches your style. For example, a dark cane with a round head will look much more like a style choice than a tool for your health.

Keeping yourself healthy should always be top priority, even if you want to maintain your style at the same time. It’s never worth caring about what other people think when it comes to something that can have a dramatic impact on your life and wellbeing.

I totally get your point and I have thought about it several times. I guess that's how humans are.

I agree, there are so many different solutions right now that you don´t need to risk your condition worsening just for trend reasons.

Is true sometimes some do not realize how influencer could totally control that part of having a product become a big trend.

Haha well they do call us influencers. But yeah taking selfies in dangerous places or damaging beautiful places to a selfie and the like. I always wear SPF except maybe in the height of winter when I am barely outside. Some trends are OK and others not so much.
