4 Tips For A Better Gift Giving Experience

How To Give A Good Gift, Gifting

There is something so special about the act of gift giving. In some cases it’s better to give than to receive, especially if it is a special celebration and it's going to be a gift that you know they’re going to love. A good gift giving experience will enhance the entire process as well as the actual gift when there is an experience attached to it. Plus, hearing that “thank you” just feels so much more special, doesn’t it? It’s kind of like an unboxing experience which can have the potential to make a greater impact. Here are a few to not only become a better gift giver but also to help you make the experience even better for both parties.

Be Genuine And Make An Effort
Depending on the recipient or the occasion, sometimes it can be a challenge trying to find a gift for a person. One of the best things you can do is to really put some thought into the gift to make sure that it feels heartfelt and is something that the person really wants. All of this counts toward the entire experience and can make a major difference. So be genuine with your gift, whether you’re getting them an experience, a physical item, or even crafting a handmade item. Putting a concerted effort into the gift will speak volumes about you as well as what you think of the receiver of your gift.

Follow Up With The Recipient
If the recipient is a close family member or a good friend, you may want to follow up and check to see if they liked the gift, especially if you didn’t get the chance to give it to them in person or had to send it to them. This isn't necessarily asking for feedback but rather checking to see whether or not the gift made it to them and if they liked it. Just asking “what did you think of it” is going to be more than enough to get their opinion on it. And if they want to talk more about it, you can go from there.

Remember That Not Everyone Has The Same Taste
When giving presents, one of the most important factors to keep in mind is that everyone has different tastes. What may seem like a thoughtful present to one person can seem like an absolute snooze fest to another. That's why it's important that you become familiar with someone's gift preferences to have a better chance at choosing a gift they'll love or at least enjoy. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t always need to give someone a gift. There are people who are zero waste and would much prefer a donation in their name to a charity they support.

Consider The Presentation
Beyond the actual present, you may want to consider the way the gift is presented and the unboxing experience. There is something so magical about the unwrapping experience when it comes to gifts. Whether these are ham gift certificates, something homemade, or extravagant like tickets or a vacation, you may want to consider how you wrap the gift. This can include a cute envelope, a decorative box, wrapping paper, twine, or a big satin ribbon on the top of it. This can have a large impact so it is something that you’re going to want to think about.

Hey Rowena,

Such a lovely and useful blog post! I totally agree with you, sometimes the act of giving a gift could be better than receiving it, but I imagine it could be difficult for many people that do not know how to approach the situation.

For me the most important part is making an effort and do a proper research, seeing what the person really wants... as you well said. I feel that this is the most common mistake, since sometimes people tend to find a gift but not based on themselves.

And creating a good presentation (almost as an experience) is like the cherry on top. It helps us to create a better version of the gift and a more valuable experience right? :)

I always take in consideration what they like want and their hobbys before giving a gift. It's important to put thought into the gift.
