A Day at Untermyer Gardens: A Hidden Gem in Yonkers

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the city without venturing too far, Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers is a breathtaking retreat that feels like stepping into another world. With its blend of history, architecture, and lush landscapes, it’s the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left. We took a trip there a few weeks ago and loved it.

A Brief History

Untermyer Gardens was once part of the estate of Samuel Untermyer, a prominent lawyer and philanthropist in the early 20th century. Designed by architect Welles Bosworth, the gardens were inspired by Indo-Persian styles, with intricate mosaics, grand columns, and symmetrical layouts that evoke a sense of timeless elegance.

What to See

● The Walled Garden –  Framed by ornate gates, flowing fountains, and vibrant seasonal blooms this Persian-style garden is the heart of Untermyer
● The Temple of Love – Perched on a rocky outcrop, this whimsical structure offers sweeping views of the Hudson River
● The Vista – This dramatic staircase lined with towering cypress trees, leads your eyes straight to the river’s edge
● The Ruins – Remnants of the old estate that add a touch of mystery and romance to your walk

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early summer bring a symphony of color, while autumn offers golden foliage and crisp air. The gardens are open year-round, and even in winter, the architecture and river views are worth the trip.

How to Get There

Untermyer Park & Gardens is located at 945 N Broadway in Yonkers, New York and is accessible by car or by public transportation. We took the Metro-North from Grand Central to the Yonkers station and then the number 6 Bee line bus to get there to avoid the 20 minute uphill walk from the Greystone Station and that turned out to be a good choice because we did plenty of hiking around the garden.

Tips for Your Visit

Admission is free, but donations help maintain the grounds.
Wear comfortable shoes because there’s a lot to explore, and some of the paths are steep and inclined.
Charge up your phone and/or camera because every corner is photogenic.
Food is not allowed inside the gardens so eat before you go.
Be sure to bring your own drinks and water because there isn't any for sale on site.
You should check the schedule for guided tours or seasonal events.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

Untermyer Gardens isn’t just any ordinary park, it’s a living piece of art that is also an experience. Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who loves a quiet stroll surrounded by beauty, this hidden gem offers a serene escape just 30 minutes from Manhattan. We really enjoyed our visit. The gardens are picturesque and we got a good deal of exercise in as we walked around. We are thinking of visiting again in the fall. I'm really glad we went before the weather heated up so we could avoid bugs.
