Though I currently have a multi-step daily skincare regimen that I religiously follow, I am also sensible enough to know that no matter what I apply topically, good skin and well being definitely starts from the inside out which is why I make sure to hydrate adequately and keep to a healthy diet. I try to eat collagen rich foods like dark leafy greens, beans, salmon and avocado. Oxtail stew also happens to be a favorite in our house. Collagen is the key structural protein in our bodies which is integrally involved in the production of strong and healthy hair, nails, tendons, bones, muscle and keeping your skin smooth.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to supplement my diet so I agreed to try out youtheory's Collagen Advanced Formula type 1,2 & 3 with 18 amino acids. I wasn't aware that there were different types of collagen. As it turns out, collagen 1 and 3 are the main collagen types in connective tissue and collagen 2 provides joint support for our cartilage. These supplements contain hydrolyzed collagen which is a highly digestible protein. Oral ingestion of this type of collagen has shown beneficial effects on joint and bone health, skin health, weight management and sports performance.
To be honest, I was actually interested in this product more for the joint and ligament benefits than for my skin, hair or nails. It's been a long haul to a full recovery since injuring my ankle last year and I'm so prone to re-injury now that I would try anything to help prevent that. I've been taking 4 tablets a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. The suggested serving is 6 tablets per day. They're about the size of a multi-vitamin and are easy to swallow.
youtheory Collagen Advanced is a natural formula containing collagen, calcium and magnesium. Each serving is 26 calories and provides 10mg of Sodium, 6g of Protein (as Collagen types 1, 2 & 3), 60mg of Vitamin C (as Calcium Ascorbate). It is free of corn, wheat, yeast, sugar, fat or dairy products.
Since taking it, I don't feel like I've experienced anything miraculous but I also haven't had any ill effects. I will say that my nails definitely do seem stronger and are growing faster and my hair is shinier. I suspect that I may need to take it longer for the joint support benefits that I'm seeking to really kick in though I have noticed that I seem to be recovering quicker after my workouts.
youtheory Collagen Advanced Formula is sold at Amazon, Walgreens, and other leading retailers. Learn more about youtheory and their other products on the brand's website.

Living in Italy, supplements are HUGE! Like, there is a supplement for everything. However, I don't think I've heard of one with Collagen benefits - that's interesting. Might have to check this out when I'm back in the states. I def do think that supplements can help with appearance of skin...
Hi Rowena! Well actually, I never took any beauty supplement but for sure Id love just to see if it could be some good effects on me. In this case, Id take these tablets of collagen especially for my hair as I think it would need. I didnt know there were many types of it :) Happy Wed dear Rowena, hugs! xo
I must admit that I've never really taken any beauty supplements, although I do take L-Glutathione for overall health. This collagen one sounds good, esp. now that I'm getting older...ahem....:)
Very interesting product. Never heard of the supplement but it seems to help the hair and the nails. I've taken hair supplements in the past, and I know they work. Right now I'm just taking my multivitamins. Thanks for sharing about this product, this is a great review.

I've never taken a supplement before for anything like this, but now I am interested, ha :) It sounds quite good. xx
I actually am not very keen on collagen supplements. The raw materials used to make them vary dramatically and, if the sources aren't brilliant or properly purified, then there might be anything from pesticides to mercury... And, of course, the risk of calcium deposits within the body that, in return, can increase risk of developing several health problems. I've tried to find the information on ingredients of this one and the company doesn't really make it clear what's inside those pills, apart from general blah-blah-blah to tempt the public... Which is a NO-NO... So... As a nutritionist, from my work and personal experiences, I believe that it's best to use a balanced diet to achieve better skin and nails (your body can build collagen fibres itself provided there's enough material (nutrients, vitamins and minerals) available... But there are other supplements that can be beneficial and have no side-effects. So be careful and, ideally, stop taking them.
Detail information about the product well done.

I take vitamins for good health, however I've never considered taking supplements, or specifically beauty supplements before now. I think I'll continue to observe the experiences of others before jumping on the bandwagon.. but I'm certainly intrigued! Wonderful photo of the product, by the way! :)

I have never heard of this before! That's wonderful that you have already noticed a difference in your hair and nails.
I definitely agree that we need to nourish from the insides as well!
Supplements are very important to support our beauty routine from the inside!

i currently do not take any oral supplements....i have a hard time remembering to take a vitamin! BUT, since training for a marathon, i am now interested in supplements that aid in quicker recovery after my runs. will look into this. thanks!
i'm always skeptical of these sorts of supplements but i think ingestiion of collagen is probably more beneficial than topica application. nice to know you're seeing some effects though.

The only supplement I am taking right now is Vitamin C, but this sounds interesting if it really does help with joints.
I am with you friend...it is such an inside job as well! I notice when I get sleep which is hit or miss with the beans that my skin looks so much better! I need to drink more water as I have been slacking a bit! I take a daily vitamin but this sounds very interesting!!! Hope that you are having a good week lady! Nicole xoxo
I've tried collagen supplements before from a different brand and although i ddnt see anything drastic, I noticed my nails were stronger and didn't chip/break as easily.

Hi Rowena, just saw your comment. If you like, shoot me an email (address is on the blog) or just leave a comment (I won't release it) and tell me exactly what you'd like to achieve with the use of supplements (i.e. reduce pain, achieve more mobility, heal, etc etc etc) and I'll send you a few suggestion for the supplements you can trust and use without worrying about side-effects. I know a few good US-based companies, so location won't be a problem.x
Interesting! I don't really take supplements as I have been disappointed in the past -I think my expectations were too high!

I have been considering taking collagen supplements orally since turning 30, but have not really wanted to start because I thought it was slightly vain. but since you've pointed out its other benefits beside plumper skin, I am intrigued, I might look into this again. :)
I don't take beauty supplement anymore because I'm just....lazy -.- But I definitely need this kind of supplement again as my hair gets duller each day u,u
Thanks for sharing, Rowena.

Another blogger tried these Rowena and she said she didn't see skin benefits either. Glad you saw nail and hair benefits.
I tried a whole bottle of of this along with Neo cell hyaluronic 100mg, and this brand is HORRIBLE!..I Ran out of my Neo Cell collage pills and figure I try this one. First off, this product claims to have both types of collagen in it.. Type I (1 & 3) & Type II (2) ...You are not suppose to take these at the same time because then they will bind together and you won't get any benefits. I'm in my last semester of nursing school focusing on nutritional nursing and this is where I learned about supplements and a classmate recommended Neo Cell products last year to me. When I did my research I contacted Neo Cell and they gladly respond within a day or 2. With YouTheory I contact them last month twice through email and face book which they deleted my question and comments. I asked them to explain how their formula to include both types of collagen would be able to absorb the "actual" collagen benefits without binding together. From my research I mentioned to them that I have yet to know a formula that would allow the body to process them together as where most brands have just Collagen 1 & 3, and Collagen 2 in seperate bottles, recommended atleast an hours wait apart if you want to take both. This company is a scam and I felt NO benefits at all. I will stick to Neo Cell Callogen type 1 & 3 w/Vitamin C and take that with the hyaluronic pills.
I definitely feel better, my skin glows, my nails are long and so lovely. my joints don't ache as much. Overall i feel youthful.
Im gonna start taking this supplement guys, and other recent review? Ill try it and will let you know too. I bought the big one for 390tabs not sure if i should take it twice or once a day??
