The Beekman Art Collection

The Beekman, The Beekman Art Collection, Hotel Art

For as long as I've lived in downtown Manhattan, I've been fascinated by the building known as Temple Court located at 5 Beekman Street. The iconic building which was constructed in 1881 during the height of New York’s early Gilded Age was one of the city's first skyscrapers. Beyond the impressive exterior is a magnificent nine-story Victorian atrium topped by a stunning pyramidal skylight. It was exciting news when it was announced that the landmark structure would be converted into a luxury hotel after being vacant for a number of years. The Beekman made it's illustrious debut last fall. I paid a visit last week with my friend Lena for the launch of the Beekman Art Collection.

The Beekman

We were treated to a special pop-up exhibition, curated by Katherine Gass that included pieces that would be featured in luxury suites and guest rooms as well as works already installed around the hotel. These include three newly commissioned site specific art works from artists Jane Hammond, Patrick Jacobs and Cathy Cone. The entirety of the Beekman Art Collection is comprised of over 60 original paintings, photographs, prints, works on paper, and sculptures by nearly twenty known and emerging international and American artists, many from the Manhattan’s downtown area. The collection also pays tribute to the rich history of the Beekman hotel as well as it's surroundings. My favorite piece was Dandelion Field with Clover and English Daisies by Patrick Jacobs, a fascinating scenic nature diorama that has the feeling of extending into infinity,  located on the wall adjacent to the front desk.

We took the opportunity to explore the hotel a little after viewing the exhibition. If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen it on my IG Stories. They did an incredible job preserving the original details of the space and creating a balance between classic and the contemporary in the decor. The Beekman hotel is a welcome addition to lower Manhattan which is fast becoming one of the most exciting areas of the city. It brings back a touch of the gilded age while adding to the vibrant landscape of the neighborhood. When we first moved downtown, there wasn't much around except for businesses. It's been thrilling to see how the area has transformed over the years and is thriving now. I always joke that soon I won't ever have to venture uptown again.

I'm fortunate for this opportunity to take a closer look at the historic building! It was such a fun evening. Thanks again, Rowena! <3<3 The inside was as beautiful as the outside and there were so many interesting nooks and crannies. I am sure I will visit again and try the bar and restaurant soon. ^-^

It is so nice to hear of classic historical buildings getting repurposed, especially in the age of Trumpland. And what a fitting way to launch with at art collection. I will have to check this out one of these days. Thanks for the info and history lesson.

I'm glad that the building has finally been converted into a luxury hotel while preserving its original details. I always find it to be a huge shame whenever a historical landmark is left vacant.

The lower Manhattan location sounds lovely and for some reason feels as though it's from a film!? Lovely! Jane Hammond's All Souls is very special, such beautiful construction and colours.
