Defining Luxury

What Luxury Means To Me, What Luxury Means, The Meaning Of Luxury, Defining Luxury

Luxury can mean different things to different people and I would agree that it's not about buying expensive things. That one may have grown out of a misconception that luxurious is synonymous with expensive which is not the case. While there can be a material side to luxury, these days the definition has evolved to broader terms. Oscar de la Renta is onto something in defining luxury as living in a way where you appreciate things. In these terms, luxury is accessible to everyone and it becomes tied into a sense of gratitude which is important when it comes to happiness.

I consider most things that make my life easier and more comfortable a luxury. Yes having a Dyson vacuum is a luxury but the luxury lies not in the price tag but in being able to quickly to pick it up and vacuum whenever I need to instead of having to put it together and plug it in which just a huge chore in itself.  Another luxury for me is having a husband who is not a picky or demanding eater. He makes requests every so often but meal planning decisions are mainly mine. It doesn't always work out when I try new dishes and there are times when I over/under season something but he always eats whatever I put in from of him without any complaints. This is why I don't mind cooking for him aside from the fact that he never acts like he expects me to and is always up for dish washing duty. This is a luxury and as well as a blessing. I also consider being able to cook a luxury since it means that I don't have to rely eating on processed foods which I try to avoid and if I'm craving something I can usually make it for myself. And while it's a luxury for some people to live in a big house, it's never been a dream of mine. Luxury is for me living in the city where everything is easily accessible and I can get to places without having to ride the train for hours. Because I grew up without much, being comfortable financially and living debt free is also a luxury. And being able to own my time is a luxury. I know it sounds odd since I'm a blogger but I don't feel obligated to share every aspect of my life on social media because I don't believe that you can truly enjoy your life if you're constantly on your phone. And since time is ephemeral, it might actually be the ultimate luxury.

So while we all define luxury differently, anything that makes it easier to enjoy one's life can be a luxury. Luxury doesn't necessarily have a price point and in some cases is truly priceless. How do you define luxury and what is a luxury to you?

Well stated, I do not post on social media everyday. I cut down to once a week and since I had done that, I had been able to focus on work and enjoy me time to me that is luxury. I also blog once a week but is due to work I have a crazy hectic schedule. Luxury things I enjoy cooking and taking spa bath, even drinking a glass a wine and enjoy my view in the country. Have a lovely weekend.

That quote made me ponder for a while. It's really right. Sometimes I just wish I have the courage to be able to do that.

As someone who grew up with not a lot of money, a lot of the things I have now I consider luxury...from being able to eat out (even just in a fast food) to having my own house (albeit really small). Luxury is definitely such a subjective topic. A lot of stuff people take for granted, I consider a luxury. Being able to drive, to travel (even once in a blue moon)...I can go on.:)
Great post, chingu:)

I absolutely agree to the quote and your words, dear Rowena! For my luxery is having time and room around me and food in high quality as well as qualitative clothing that matches with the weather. And to decide free is real luxery for me!

I love what you said about time being the ultimate luxury. It really is. I love the luxury that I have that allows me to explore new things and places. I love the luxury that being open-minded gives me. But on the other hand, I also love the luxury of being able to travel. It changes perspectives.

I agree that time is the ultimate luxury. For me cooking and eating (especially im good company) is luxury too, something I enjoy doing. Being able to cook means staying away from processed foods and that's always good. Having access to food and drink is a luxury in itself. So many people don't have access to fresh water and regular meals. One I saw a woman in an ad for Mary's meals saying her dream is to be free from hunger and it made me cry. We all have so much to be grateful for, but we often forget it. We can use technology to educate ourselves and learn new skills. So muck knowledge is available to us, that's a great blessing in itself. For me the greatest privilage is having time for myself and also time to spend with loved ones.

For me the luxury is so many things because I live in a country and a society with so many contrasts and I can see how the simple fact of using something as simple as a computer is a luxury that others can not even dream.

I agree with you. Luxury sometimes are things that are cheap but make our lives easier like my coffee machine :)

I agree - luxury is not a price tag, it's the feeling you get from things. like a few pieces of chocolate after a long day with the kids, when they are all sound asleep in their bed, that's a luxury for sure!

Hope that you have a great weekend! :)

I agree Rowena, Luxury isn't always defined by a price tag. Some of the simplest things in life can be so luxurious and meaningful. Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

I think that the idea of luxury definitely changes from person to person. My idea of luxury is being swathed in soft moisteriser, in a country where the sun is almost always shining, with some fresh fruit. That's all, haha.

Have a great weekend :)

Luxury to me is priceless.

It's the steam rising from a hot cuppa held in cold hands.
It's a nurturing warm bath.
It's a pause amidst a busy day.
It's being present with family and friends.

My laptop is finally up and running again so I am back trying to catch up! What a beautifully written and thought-provoking post, Rowena. Luxury to me is little blessings in life, it's priceless and a healthy, happy family and with an amazing small circle of friends are pretty much my luxuries in life.

I couldn't agree more about this. When I was younger I certainly defined luxury as in expensive and designer but these days it is so much more broader. Travel for one is such a luxury. Just to be able to go somewhere and see and experience a different culture and landscape. Having a roof over your head and a car to drive (recently had an accident and lost my car because of it). Simple things that people take for granted are what I call luxury these days.

That's true Luxury is much more than material goods -but surrounded by commercial we often forget about it. Luxury is time that you can spend with your friends, cup of tea and time with great book, time that we can offer the second person.

I think, the luxury life may be related to how well you live your life. it's not about spending a lot of money, it's about enjoying the little things and creating quality time for yourself.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. Sometimes even self care or doing something for yourself, like getting a facial or even getting Botox and filler to make yourself feel better about your appearance can be a luxury. Do you think so?
