Song Hye Kyo, The Epitome Of Grace And Character

“You can be beautiful but it’s difficult to be graceful, and it’s even harder to have both grace and character. You have to have a strong belief and always be honest with yourself and to the world.
Be kind, be bold, be graceful, be virtuous. That’s my interpretation of grace and character.”

SONG HYE KYO

Everyone who reads here regularly knows that I was a fan of the Song Song couple and I mentioned their divorce in my last post on marriage.  I'm going to fully address it because there are some falsehoods out there that need to be cleared up. News came out last week that the couple's marriage of one year and eight months officially ended with both sides agreeing on a divorce without alimony or division of property.  This settlement came about a month after the news of the couple's divorce was announced in the media. I'm pretty sure that the original intention was to keep this news quiet and not make any announcement until the divorce was finalized but Song Joong Ki decided he would file for divorce and then announce it to the media on his own without informing Song Hye Kyo and while she was out of the country for work. This was after she asked him for a divorce and he didn't agree to it. He also issued some vague passive aggressive statement that painted a picture like she was in the wrong somehow, talking about he had to end the pain but they were going try to keep things amicable. Shots fired, he then went to go watch a musical.

Now in South Korea there is this perception that whoever petitions for the divorce is a wronged party in some way which is sometimes the case but not always. So Hye Kyo's ex effectively threw her under the bus which I'm sure is quite intentional because he also started orchestrating leaks from his legal team and his family to create sympathy for himself and save his own image while trying to destroy hers. Hye Kyo remained silent with the exception of a statement from her agency confirming the divorce proceedings and that it was due to differences in personality. I'm her fan first and foremost. She has always been a target of the media. I'm not sure why.  Is it because she had the nerve to admit to dating a few of her costars? She's certainly not the only one but somehow she gets all the hate. So of course thanks to her ex's PR machinations, people jumped to conclusions and assumed she must've cheated on poor him. They even went as far as to accuse Park Bo Gum of being the third party just because he happened to be the costar in her last drama Encounter. It got so bad that Bo Gum's agency had to issue a statement threatening legal action if people didn't stop. Meanwhile her ex who is supposed to be good friends with Bo Gum never stepped up to clear his name because that would mean clearing hers as well. And then Hye Kyo was hit with harsh criticism again when she attended events for her brand ambassadorships with Sulwhasoo and Chaumet where she was stunning as ever (just look at these photos of her in Monaco!) at both events and people were outraged that she had the nerve to smile and look happy. She's getting divorced and moving on which is not a crime.  Go get a life. Like was she supposed to cry and look miserable because I'm sure the event organizers would've loved that. This is called being professional, honoring your responsibilities and maintaining an image in public.  By the way her ex isn't getting any of the same backlash because of misogynistic double standards.

Living in a close minded, sexist, conservative, and traditional country like South Korea while being a highly scrutinized, public figure and a child of divorced parents, Hye Kyo is very courageous in choosing not stay in a bad marriage just for the sake of appearances. If she were from a Western society, her actions would be applauded but that's not how Asian societies work. Anyway this is what real female empowerment looks like. It has absolutely nothing to do with posing half naked in photos or wearing revealing clothing. This will only make her life more difficult because of how divorce is seen as a taboo there. It's kind of ironic considering she portrayed the stigma of being divorcée in her last drama. Throughout all of this, she has not complained about her life being hard or maligned her ex in any way, a huge contrast from his nasty and vindictive actions. This silence speaks volumes to her strength, class and dignity and makes her all the more admirable. Her agency just announced that they will start taking legal action against baseless rumors and hate comments. I don't know the full details but I heard that some were downright vicious and malicious not harmless things like her clothes don't fit properly or she spends too much money. It's good they are taking action because groundless gossip can ruin lives and careers.  I always say that I don't stan anyone but if I did it would be Song Hye Kyo. This doesn't mean that I lose my sense of critical thinking and will love or think that everything she does is right but I will believe in her character when I hear anything bad about her. I honestly had my doubts about him at first because he was known to be shrewd and calculating but he seemed so earnest and determined to protect her that I shipped them for her sake. His true colors surfaced with the shady way he handled their divorce proceedings. It's a relief that it ended quickly and she is no longer with him. He is definitely not the good person he pretended to be.

It's no surprise that luxury heritage jewelry brand Chaumet chose Hye Kyo for their "Grace and Character” campaign. Her exquisite beauty aside, she certainly understands and personifies those qualities with the elegance, dignity and humility with which she always conducts herself. It's a shame that she gets judged and scorned for being real and living her life on her own terms while there are those who are loved because people don't see how fake and hypocritical they are. Always remember that PR can be bought and there are certain public figures and celebrities who plant stories in the press to make themselves look good and their rivals look bad. So don't follow anyone blindly and don't' believe every story that comes out. Watch out for those from unnamed sources and if something seems off, it probably is. There are many who like to pretend that they're something they're not. Pay attention to people's actions and make sure they don't contradict their words.

I admire Song Hye Kyo because she has endured so much unfounded negative criticism and hate throughout her career and she still stands strong, not afraid to be herself or stay true to her values. She is actually incredibly low key and doesn't seek attention when she's not promoting a project which is so refreshing in this age of thirsty attention seeking and self serving narcissism. She has also never lamented any of the backlash or acted like a victim for sympathy. Those haters should really direct their attention to people who really deserve it like all of those not getting punished for their involvement in the Burning Sun scandal.  Now go on and be happy and live your best life girl! And please write a book sharing all your age defying beauty secrets. My husband was stunned when he found out she is 37.  She is eternally radiant and youthful.

There are always 2 sides to a coin. We will never know what really happened behind those closed doors and we should not want to know. They have since moved on and so should we. That aside, Hye Kyo has truly got to be one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Another great post, chingu:) Hear hear....man, it wasn't until you got me into KDrama and started reading about how brutal the netizens are over there in regards to celebs that I realize that North American actors/actresses almost have it easy. It's so sad that this has happened to Hye Kyo. As you have pointed out, she gets blamed for all her relationships not working out, and I'm like, why? I think it has a lot to do with jealousy coz, frankly, all these leading men she's been with are/were idolized sooooo much by women. So disappointed with Joong Ki for sure. I'm glad you cleared up a lot of what has been out there coz seriously, I wouldn't have known! And yeah....that Burning Sun scandal is straight out out of some Korean crime drama show!!!!! Holy crap!!!!

Wow, this is even worse then here. It may be 2019 but the world at large still has a long way to go. It is crazy how far and fast we have some with technology but still have age old problems of sexism and racism. I hope that South Korea takes hold of the #metoomovement. And I am glad she is standing up for herself and that her agency is suing.

I remember you mentioning the Song Song couple divorce in your last post. His behaviour sounds really messed up, I'm glad she managed to keep her cool. Hye Kyo is truly beautiful and radiant, and especially so in these shots. It seems she is as rich in grace and character as she is in beauty.

I know nothing about this woman or her divorce (well, I guess I do now), but I totally get what you mean about living in a traditional country and being a publicly scrutinized individual. It's not easy dealing with the media and a possibly sexist culture.

I didn't know anything about her before the divorce but I feel sorry for her as divorce is always so messy! At least they were not married long, I am guessing they had no kids, so at least that is a blessing! Divorce is always so hard on kids.

Hope that your week is off to a good start :)

Taking sides in a divorce is always difficult, even more so if it is a public couple that carefully chooses what and what not to reveal to the public. I don´t follow any of these news, but I immediately sympathize with the side that remains silent and doesn´t share dirty secrets...

Song Hye Kyo should be role model for many womens and girls because she choose her own happines and left from bad marriage. She is really gorgeous and I can completely understand why Chaumet choose her for campaign. She and jewlery are perfect combination.

Hi Rowena, I’m also a SHK fan for many years. I did like SJK after watching DOTS. He’s a very good actor. Not sure of his reputation. I didn’t like the way he handled the divorce too. I read some comments by Koreans that SHK had good reasons to be anxious when SJK declared divorce first because it usually meant that the other passive party (SHK in this case) had done something wrong in the union. I had mixed thoughts about their divorce and who’s at fault etc. After reading your blog, I have a different perspective. When you brought Park Bogum into the picture, it does look like SJK had something to hide. It’s only recently that SJK cleared his friend’s name. I’d be very upset if I were PBG if my friend had no guts to step out to help me clear my name. No wonder they are not friends anymore.

When you said “unnamed sources”, what do you mean by that?
