Dine Out : Ladybird

Ladybird Review, Ladybird NYC, Ladybird Vegan, Vegan Dining NYC

Since we eat predominantly plant based now, we are also interested in exploring more vegan options when we dine out.  Located in the East Village behind a candy cane striped door, Ladybird is a globally inspired vegetable tapas restaurant that offers an inventive, seasonal menu of small plates meant for sharing. The cozy, dimly lit space features plush green banquettes, intimate seating and an expansive bar area. Upon being seated, our server came over and introduced himself. Explaining the menu concept, he suggested that 3 - 4 dishes would be a good starting point for 2 people and gave us a menu printed on a piece of paper on which we could check off our selections.

Everything sounded good and we eventually settled on the Beet and Avocado Ceviche, Buffalo Maitake Buns, Kale Caesar and Mushroom and Onion Toast. The ceviche was light and refreshing as one would expect ceviche to be. The crispy and tender bao buns were a perfect combination of texture and taste. The tangy buffalo sauce and pickled celery really highlighted both. The salad was nice, if not particularly exciting. The toast which provided an elevated take on mushrooms was hearty and bursting with umami flavor. This may have been my favorite dish.  The taste of everything was on point and the dishes were creatively presented.

All in all we had a lovely experience and really enjoyed our meal. We found 4 dishes to be just right for us. The service was good too. We would be interested in returning as well as visit their sister restaurants Avant Garden, Mother of Pearl and Cienfuegos which are also plant based especially Avant Garden which I've heard is even more inventive. I don't know about everyone else but I like to use dining out to get meal planning inspiration and often try to recreate restaurant dishes at home. I'm definitely going to take a crack at the mushroom and onions soon. Ladybird does take reservations which I would recommend if you go there since it is a relatively small space.

I wish I was able to recreate restaurant dishes at home, but basic cooking is all I can get accomplished.

So cool that you found such an awesome place that serves vegan food! I would love to visit when I go to New York in March, but it doesn't seem to be too kid friendly lol Have a great week!

These four dishes do look delicious. The presentation is beautiful and interesting....as you said yourself- creative. It seems you found a winning vegan restaurant to dine in.

I am the same way, Rowena. One of the main reasons why I love dining out is to get inspiration and try recreating the dishes at home. Doesn't always work but it's always nice and refreshing to cook something new.

I consider myself an epicurious so I will not mind trying out this restaurant. Is so elegant the menu looks delicious, only in NY you find an upper class look vegan restaurant.

I saw the mushroom toast on your IG, my mum used to make mushroom toast and this looks great. Although I am not vegan, or vegetarian anymore, we still eat two or three vegetarian meals weekly. Enjoy the rest of your week, Rowena.
