Last week I spoke about committing myself to putting in the work to do better and be a better ally. And one way I will be doing this is by supporting more Black owned brands as well as those which are are diverse and inclusive because I really believe that socially conscious spending is an actionable and impactful way to help bridge racial inequity and if enough people do this, it can facilitate meaningful change. This month's wish list features an array of fabulous products from Black owned brands, some of which I have admired for awhile as well as some new to me that I'd love to try.
Items acquired from last month's wish list:
Ben Sherman Slip-On Sneaker
These are great and my husband is wearing them all the time.
Fromm Explore 5.75'' Shear
We haven't used these yet but have our at home haircuts planned for this coming weekend.
Madison James Flyaway Sticks
These have a lovely relaxing fragrance and are working well to keep the bugs away from our terrace so far.
1. CUSHNIE Women's Pleated Dress
This ready-to-wear label which creates pieces that are a perfect balance of structured and fluid silhouettes tailored to flatter all shapes has been a red carpet darling for years worn most notably by the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o. CEO and Creative Director, Carly Cushnie is now using her position to inspire the next generation of female designers and celebrate diversity. The Cushnie brand is currently available to the masses through a special limited edition collection created for Target. One of my favorites is this bold, color block dress.
2. TOVE Remi Silk-Crepon Straight-Leg Pants
Designers Camille Perry and Holly Wright created TOVE with a goal to design modern, feminine clothing that seamlessly fits into busy lifestyles. The London-based brand produces each style in small batches using the most luxurious fabrics. The pieces can be mixed and matched season after season to create a timeless wardrobe. Cut from the label's signature silk-crepon, these 'Remi' pants have a flattering high-rise silhouette and straight legs lined with georgette to maintain an elegant drape.
3. Mateo 14-Karat Gold, Diamond and Pearl Earrings
Self-taught designer and 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist Matthew Harris draws inspiration from modern art when creating the brand's minimal yet striking fine jewelry pieces with unique and sculptural touches. These elegant and artful, handcrafted earrings are a great investment piece that would look perfect with a variety of looks.
4. Want Les Essentiels Petra Leather Crossbody
I've been a longtime of this brand founded by brothers Byron and Dexter Peart that offers timeless every day basics. Their sustainable and streamlined designs which marry form and function are modern solutions made to last. I got my husband this nylon crossbody a few years ago. It has such a high end feel, goes with everything and still looks new. I'm admiring this chic leather crossbody with multi-colored gussets that can also be worn as belt bag.
5. Brother Vellies Burkina Papaye Stripe Sandals
Designer Aurora James has made it her style mission to bring the label’s playful, eclectic designs into the modern woman’s wardrobe. Her collection of sleek boots, feminine mules and stylish handbags are handmade in a number of African countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, and Morocco. She is also the founder of the 15 Percent Pledge that calls on major retailers to pledge 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. These fun and colorful mules are also consciously made.
6. Oui the People The Single Rose Gold Sensitive Skin Razor
Founder Karen Young founded Oui the People with a goal to create thoughtfully designed, efficacious products that help people feel great in their own skin The Single is fitted with a single blade designed for a close shave free of pulling, razor burn, ingrown hairs and irritation even for those with sensitive skin. It comes with a pack of 10 blades and is a sustainable hair removal solution that will also look great in any bathroom.
7. Hyper Skin Hyper Clear Skin Vitamin C Serum
Desiree Verdejo founded Hyper skin following struggles with acne and dark marks during her pregnancy. The Hyper Clear serum was created as an effective and affordable brightening solution and is the brand's hero product. It contains a 15% vitamin C and vitamin E formulation that work to brighten skin, smooth fine lines and rough texture, and dramatically clear dark spots from hyperpigmentation while fruit enzymes, bearberry, turmeric, and kojic acids target dark spots that can be left behind by breakouts while helping to prevent future breakouts.
8. GOLDE Clean Greens Edible Superfood Facial Mask
This independent Brooklyn born brand founded by a mother and daughter team offers a range superfood-boosted essentials for health and beauty including facial masks and wellness latte blends. Made with 100% pure, edible superfoods including chlorella, spirulina, and mango juice, this mask is like a green smoothie for your skin that works to gently detoxify while delivering key nutrients to promote a clear, glowing complexion.
9. KLUR Symmetry Fluid
KLUR is a botanically-based skincare skincare line founded by practiced esthetician Lesley Thornton around the principles of clean and ethical beauty and encompassed by inclusivity. This Symmetry Fluid is a nutrient-rich concentrate that creates a breathable barrier, fortifying skin and daily exposure to urban pollution, oxidation and environmental stressors.
10. The Koop New York Candles
The Brooklyn-based company founded by Kristen Rose creates affordable, quality scented candles using coconut & soy wax and phthalate-free fragrances. Each candle is hand-poured and the chic and minimal designs which look great can totally repurposed as stylish storage solutions. They are currently sold out and I'm keeping an eye on when they restock. I'm most interested in the After Party, Slow Sunday and Ocean Drive scents but really they all sound incredible and at $17.50 each you can try a bunch without breaking the bank.
