Personal Update

Reading...
I shifted away from fast fashion some years ago because I wanted to build a more sustainable wardrobe and if I hadn't already, this book would certainly make me think twice. The author talks about the correlation of overconsumption and the climate crisis which is nothing new but she also discusses how the fashion  industry is rooted in colonialism and racism as well as how these factors play into how fast fashion is produced in sweat shop conditions where workers aren’t earning living wages. It's an eye opening read that reminds us that we can all do better.

Watching...
A immortal man is on a quest for revenge to end a 600 year curse and reclaim his soul.  This drama which blends fantasy horror elements with curses, fate, karma and monsters got off to a really promising start but has started to lag and meander since passing the half way mark. This really could have been 12 episodes instead of 16 to correct that. The cinematography and production is incredible. The acting of the leads Lee Jin Wook and Kwon Na Ra has been disappointing with too many blank expressions in situations that call for emotion. Thankfully Lee Joon and Gong Seung Yeon have been quite compelling in their roles. It ends this week and I hope it won't be a total letdown.

Watched...
One Ordinary Day is the second remake of the British drama Criminal Justice, following the American version The Night Of. We were interested in this since we had watched the original as well as the remake. The gripping crime drama tells the story of a college student who finds himself the prime suspect in the murder of a young woman following a drunken night of fun. No one believes in his innocence except for one lawyer. Kim Soo Hyun is exceptional as the college student but Cha Seung Won who plays his lawyer is the one who really shines in this drama which casts a disturbing look at the imperfections of the criminal justice system. The Night Of is still the best version for us but this was well made and worth a watch especially if you like any of the actors.

Listening to...
This podcast is about fashion, but it’s also about ethics, history, science, and economics. It demystifies the fashion industry and helps the listener to understand how to be an educated consumer. The subject of sustainability is tackled in a really compelling way as well.

Snacking on...
Started eating pistachios to switch it up from fruit. They taste good and are one of the most nutrient dense nuts with a high content of protein, fiber, antioxidants and healthy fat. They also have health benefits like improving heart health and cholesterol levels as well as blood sugar balance.

Trying Out ...
I've remained dedicated to regularly working out and have been looking for ways to change up and integrate more types of workouts into my routine. I just started trialing this app and I'm still trying to become familiar with it. I do like that it offers a wide range of workouts at different levels that includes yoga, HIIT, strength training, cardio, walking running, cycling, stretching and mediation. The guided programs are good and it also tracks your progress which is really helpful.

Loving
I love my large foam roller and use it daily in my exercise but I wanted a small one to use for targeting specific areas and picked this up on sale last month. It's great for decompressing my joints and relieving tension and pain in hard to reach places. And the small size makes it travel friendly. My husband has been using it too. I think I might buy another one as a backup.

Wearing...
I'm in love with this swingy and feminine midi dress. My favorite detail is the tiered, ruffled skirt. I can't believe the gorgeous floral-printed silk fabric is actually leftover from previous seasons but that makes it sustainable. This is the type of dress I can see myself wearing for many years to come which is a one of the criteria I use when I purchase new clothing.

That dress is beautiful! :) I'm trying to be more critical with my purchases too - after watching the True Cost documentary and seeing how few things I've actually hit 30 wears on I'm shopping less so I can rewear more and it's interesting seeing how my shopping has been slowing over the years!

Glad you are enjoying consumed too! It's on my hold list at the library but it hasn't become available for me yet.

Hope that you had a fun weekend :) We had a good one, last one of the summer school holidays!

Yes, fast fashion and colonialism are interconnected. I'd love to read the book that explores that. The podcast also sounds like a good way to learn about the down sides of fashion fashion and the importance of sustainable clothes.
That fitness program sounds lovely. I'm currently following Lazy Dancer work outs on YouTube by Alessia. I'm also trying to work out regularly as prevention and help against chronic pain.

'Consumed' sounds interesting, although colonialism and racism in the fashion industry is nothing new, I used to work in it many years on both sides of business and glamorous part and it was anything but the latter. I've loved my Peleton for a few years, but only have used the app for a couple of years or so. it has a good mix of workouts. I'm sure you will like it. We might get a rowing machine, at least entertaining the thought of one for the moment to rotate in our routines. Hope you have a lovely week, Rowena. Will check out that podcast! <3
