Kitchens are the main focal points of many homes as the place where most people can spend hours cooking, eating and entertaining. Therefore it's important that your kitchen reflects your home's personality is a place you enjoy.  In a recent survey, about 28% of homeowners said they would like to remodel their kitchen to help give their recently purchased home a personality. Whether you have a new home or would like to spruce up your kitchen, here are a few ideas that will help you get started.

Declutter
There is something refreshing about a thorough clean out of any space. Because the kitchen is a high traffic area, it can feel busy at all times. The chances are that many items brought in by family and friends might get left behind in kitchens as well. A cluttered kitchen does not communicate calm and can make it difficult for you to appreciate the space and lessen it's functionality. Thirty-two percent of people in a study reported that their kitchens were the least organized rooms in their homes. Before you declutter your kitchen, you should determine your goal. Do you want to cook in a cleaner environment? Do you have a bunch of gadgets and appliances you never use? Take everything out, remove duplicates and any items you have no use for and then rearrange them so that the tools you use most are easiest to access. Go through your pantry and do the same. This process will help you take inventory and make sure that everything has a home. Clearing the clutter will also make your kitchen easier to clean.

Update The Lighting
Light fixtures are a great way to modernize your kitchen and a good lighting system in your kitchen is something you should prioritize to give it a personality. It is important to create a well-lit and functional environment that helps you to see clearly. It is also very helpful in spotting dirt which will motivate you to keep it clean. Plus the perfect lighting system will make your kitchen feel welcoming and make those photographic moments even more beautiful. You might want to look into general lighting options like a pendant and recessed lights, which normally are the centerpiece of your kitchen's lighting system that can be hung over the dining table or kitchen island. If you want to make a visual statement, you should consider accent lighting. Those are perfect for highlighting details and can be installed over shelves or cabinets.

Create A Display
If you have cabinets or shelves that you don't typically use, you can turn them into a display station and fun activity for the family. You can check out antique shops and thrift stores for unique décor pieces to use in your display. Your refrigerator is probably the most used appliance in your kitchen. But they aren't there just to store food.  You can also turn the outside into a mini gallery. You can decorate the doors with custom photo magnets from your photo collection. It's a great way to personalize your kitchen with meaningful mementos. If you have the time, you can even decorate your refrigerator in themes every month for the whole year.

Update Your Appliances
You should update your kitchen essentials and appliances regularly. However, it can be quite costly to do all at once. But you will save money with energy efficient replacements. Another thing to keep in mind is that replacing older models also increases the value of your home should you consider selling it at some point. As your appliances get older, they might develop issues and not work as well. You must weigh your options to see if purchasing a new one is worth it. Sometimes it could be a minor issue that can be corrected and with repairs. Whatever you do, be sure to invest in high quality appliances that last you a long time or seek professional help for those that need repair.

Change Your Countertops
If you've lived in your home for a long time or have just moved into a new home, you are likely to be unsatisfied with your kitchen countertops. The right countertops for your kitchen will depend on the overall style, your existing cabinetry and your budget. When replacing them, you should select durable materials that match your cleaning and maintenance habits. For a more unique and eclectic look, you can choose to mix material options for your counters and island.

Your kitchen should be both functional and beautiful. It is a place where you prepare food to eat and share with friends and family. It is also an extension of your home's personality so don't be afraid to express it.

Love these tips. I declutter my kitchen often to keep everything organized and if there I do get something with pretty packaging I like to display them.
