Our Trip To See The Cherry Blossoms In DC

We took a trip to Washington, D.C. on the last week of March to go see the cherry blossoms and considering peak bloom occurred on March 17 this year (second earliest on record), it's a good thing we didn't wait until April. We didn't account for how much it would rain in the Northeast this March which does affect how long the blossoms last so they were looking a little droopy by the time we made our way to the Tidal Basin to see them. We actually had to wait until our second to last day there to go because of the rain. They were still pretty and I managed to capture some nice images for a photo study. D.C. is known for Yoshino cherry blossoms which feature white flowers, single or in clusters of 2 to 5. These trees were gifted to the US by Japan.

As for the trip, we decided that 3 days and 3 nights would be ideal since it worked on so well for us on our Rhode Island trip. We took the Acela business class which got us into Union Station in D.C. in about 3.5 hours. We booked a junior suite at the Thompson in the Navy Yards. This up and coming neighborhood which is home to Nationals ballpark is a little less central but very accessible to everything else by Metro or walking. It was very safe and quiet and we liked being by the scenic waterfront where we would take daily walks. There were also plenty of food options nearby.  We liked Chloe, TaKorean, Any Day Now, and Tatte Bakery.

Unfortunately it rained quite a bit during our visit but we made the best of it. We had planned a number of museums visits so it kind of worked out I guess. We had gone to most of them years ago when we were in DC and they are still free and pretty good. We went to the Renwick GallerySmithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Art, National Building MuseumHirshorn Museum & Sculpture GardenNational Museum of Asian Art. We zipped through the National Museum of Natural History because it was super crowded and skipped the National Air and Space Museum altogether because the lines were way long and we'd already been there before. If you ever visit DC, the museums are worthwhile and they're free.

Seeing the cherry blossoms was an experience and they were pretty and made for a marvelous photography subject but with there being way too many people at the Tidal Basin and many of them being just straight up rude like randomly stopping and hogging up the entire path and shaking the blossoms for their photos, I don't think it's something we'd ever do again. We did love our hotel which was modern and clean and our suite was like a small apartment with a nice view of the river. We actually had dinner on our couch one night as we watched opening day baseball. Our Yankees beat the Houston Astros in a very exciting game.

Have you visited D.C. in the spring or any other time of the year? Are you a fan of cherry blossoms?

Oh wow! These pics are awesome, chingu! There's a park here in TO that is also seeing a big crowd right now because of the cherry blossoms, and in my eldest son's uni downtown, they also have of these trees so it's crazy. And that's so great you got to see so many museums! Haven't been to DC, but maybe someday...:)
