Sleep Guide: Five Tips For Better Sleep

Greg Hsu Elle Taiwan, Greg Han Kuanghan Hsu

How many times do you find yourself saying ‘Oh I’m so tired right now’? If that sounds like you on a daily basis, then it might just be that you’re not getting enough sleep. On average, you should be aiming for around seven hours of sleep each night. Ideally, getting eight or even nine hours of sleep will ensure you’re well-rested and ready to start the day anew as well as promote better overall health. However, that’s not always possible and many will end up falling short when it comes to quality sleep. With that in mind, here are five tips for better sleep.

Dress For The Bedroom
When it comes to getting ready for bed, it’s essential that you’re comfortable. If you’re not comfortable, then you’re not going to be rested once you get into bed. From tight clothing to clothing that isn't right for the temperature of the room, consider options that work best for you. At the same time, you should be dressing for the bedroom and not for lounging on the couch. That means out with joggers and in with the sleepshirts for women. Try to avoid anything that doesn't fit well or isn’t suitable for the bed. Consider the seasons and the time of year you’re in to dress appropriately.

Invest In A Good Mattress
A good mattress is always important when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. The average mattress should last you around eight years but a high quality, well made mattress will stand the test of time especially if  you make sure to flip it regularly. You shouldn’t shy away from splurging and consider this an investment in your health. Yes, it can be costly but when you’re sleeping on it every day, it should be a good one.

Consider Tog Levels For Your Duvet
Tog levels are something to consider when it comes to the temperature of the room. For a more restful sleep, it’s worth going for a tog level that reflects how warm or how cold the room is. The higher the tog, the thicker and more heat will be retained in the duvet. There’s nothing worse than waking up in hot sweats because the duvet is just too warm. Ideally, it’s worthwhile having a duvet for summer and a duvet for winter. You can also get all-year-round options if you’re not that fussed when it comes to togs.

Black Out The Room
To help with sleep, a good method of falling asleep faster is by blacking out the room. This is a useful way to help block out any street lights or any type of light that might shine through the window or bedroom door. When you’re in a busy household or one that catches a lot of light, blacking out the room with blackout curtains or blinds is a worthwhile investment.

Drown Out Outside Activity With White Noise
Finally, to help combat the audible sounds that come from in and around the room, it may be worthwhile to drown this out with white noise especially if you're a light sleeper. White noise is also great for those who struggle with sleep and/or perhaps have noisy neighbors or live on a noisy street.

With these tips, hopefully, you’ll be able to get a better night’s sleep from now on.
