While getting enough sleep should certainly see us rising with our alarms, that isn’t the case for everyone. In fact, it’s quite possible that hidden health problems mean it takes you an hour or more to finally get out of bed after your alarm. Even then, you might be groggy or sore in a way that looks nothing like the ideal morning rise and shine.
As well as feeling generally unpleasant, these wake-up setbacks could entirely throw the rest of your day. But it doesn’t need to be like that if you consider the following hidden health problems that are causing your morning inertia, and the potential solutions for each.
1. Sleep Setbacks
Our culture puts a lot of weight on the importance of a reliable, reasonable bedtime for ensuring we’re refreshed come morning, but what if you’ve implemented this benefit and still can’t open your eyes with your alarm? Sleep setbacks could be to blame.
Insomnia is perhaps the most common example of this, and could see lying awake for hours, or waking too early, without the ability to drift right back to sleep. Equally, sleep apnea, which results in disruptive pauses to your breathing throughout the night, could see your brain struggling to rest.
In either instance, you’re bound to feel exhausted come morning, and this is true whatever you do. Luckily, sticking to your bedtime routine can help here, as can implementing healthy lifestyle changes like weight loss, alcohol avoidance, and quitting smoking. If you still struggle, there are also treatments available that could see you loving your alarm once again.
2. Aches and Pains
In an ideal world, you would wake from your sleep feeling fresh and ready to rumble, but that’s not the reality for many of us. Aches and pains in your joints or spine can be a lot worse after a long night of sleep, and they can make getting out of bed incredibly hard.
Luckily, there are a range of things you can do if aches keep you lying in bed too long, including engaging in exercise during the day. Seeking preventative wellness care with a chiropractor who can address all of your musculoskeletal niggles can also be an incredibly effective, medication-free way to iron out those morning kinks for the long term.
Issues that continue despite your preventative efforts could also be a sign of a more serious condition, such as fibromyalgia. If aches have led to extra hours in bed for a year or more, then don’t hesitate to contact a health practitioner to discuss the best path forward.
Getting out of bed isn’t easy for everyone, but it could be a lot easier for you if you take steps to address these alarm-halting hidden health problems.
