Dine Out : Nobu

Nobu New York, Nobu Review, Nobu Downtown, Nobu Tribeca

After many years at their original Tribeca flagship, Nobu made a move further downtown into the heart of the Financial District. Located in the landmarked building that once housed the AT&T headquarters, Nobu Downtown is an expansive bi-level restaurant that spans the ground and sub-level floors. A wooden ash brushstroke sculpture is the sweeping centerpiece of the upstairs space that features a bar and more casual lounge area akin to the former Nobu Next Door. Bold limestone columns, original details of the former lobby corner off the bar area. Taking inspiration from Japanese origami, blonde wood slatted ceilings oversee the spacious dining room downstairs. The decor overall evokes the Japanese countryside with a generous use of natural textures, birch trees and a wall made of river stones. A dramatic ceramic mural provides a scenic backdrop for the plush banquettes.

The last time I dined at Nobu was actually at Nobu 57 last fall. We actually used to go to the Tribeca location Nobu more regularly but it kind of fell out favor for us as there are always new eateries to try in the city. We decided to have lunch there during Restaurant Week because why not. I was happy to see that their menu still offers many of their celebrated dishes. My obsession with Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna was born at Nobu so of course we had to get that. I love their presentation with the lollipop style crispy rice cubes that you dip into ponzu and then spoon the spicy tuna onto. It was delicious! We got the tuna sashimi salad, and the chefs selection sushi for our appetizers. The lightly seared tuna was fresh and tender. The salad dressing had a nice tang but it was also too salty. The sushi at Nobu has never been a real standout but it's good.

Our entrées were the black cod with miso and seared arctic char with jalapeño dressing. Both were perfectly seasoned and prepared. The black cod miso is such an iconic dish. It's always been one of my favorite dishes at Nobu and it still is. I love it so much that I actually learned to make a version of it at home years ago. For dessert we chose the black sesame sweet cream panna cotta topped with berries and the chocolate and matcha financiers. Both were light in texture as well as sweetness. A nice way to end the meal. The service from as soon as we entered to the end of our meal was impeccable which is what one would expect from this type of establishment. We appreciated that they actually brought over a machine to process our credit card payment tableside so that our card never left our sight. I expect that to be the way of the future.

Nobu has been around since 1994 and back then the innovative concept of chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s fusion of traditional Japanese techniques with Peruvian flavors made it an instant sensation. It has since gone on to great success with 39 restaurants around the globe. There is a certain level of quality we've come to expect and our experience at the new downtown location did not disappoint. I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the area. Just know that it's not inexpensive. The Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna alone is $27. They do have some great lunch prix fixe options outside of RW.

Have you eaten at a Nobu?

Fun fact: I attended the Jill Stuart AW 2017 Presentation in this very same space just months before it was transformed into the restaurant.  I loved that show!

Oh man....the food looks awesome, Rowena! $27 for the crispy rice does sound a tad expensive but if it's those once-in-awhile experience and it's freaking good, it's actually ok.:) I wish a Nobu would open here!

The infamous Nobu! I'm not in New York often enough to ever get a chance to eat there. Maybe one day I'll try to go for the experience.

I've never ate at Nobu, haven't ever been to NY but I'm happy to hear you had a nice experience dinning there again. That crispy rice sounds promising, it's always great when we can order a meal we already tried and liked. The other dishes sound just as delicious.

I like the presentation of the dishes....they are very visually appealing, wonderful colours and food arrangements- looks like a work of art.

Does the credit card usually leave the table in the US? In Germany the machine is usually brought to the table or you get up and walk over to the machine, you don´t hand your credit card over.

I've always wanted to eat at Nobu. Even though I don't eat seafood (I'd still find something to eat hahaha!) still, I've heard so many great reviews on not just the food but the ambience and interiors. It's like a complete "experience" dining there
