If your skin concerns include minimizing fine lines, lightening hyperpigmentation and fighting acne breakouts, you should be looking at retinol. A multi-tasking wonder, retinol is one of the most effective ingredients that tackles all of these issues to create more even toned and smooth complexions. While that is all well and good, retinol does have some drawbacks including cases of sensitivity, inflammation or redness as well as dryness. This is where natural, plant-derived, or vegan retinol comes in. These offer all the benefits of traditional retinol but without the skin sensitivity effects.

My initial experience with a retinol alternative was with the Oskia Super 16 Advanced Nutri-Active Collagen Serum which I first tried last year. This advanced formulation contains the ground-breaking  retinol alternative ingredient bakuchiol (pronounced bah-koo-chee-all) derived from Indian Babchi seeds which is traditionally used to heal cuts. Bakuchiol has been hailed as a natural and more stable alternative to retinol with all the benefits like boosting the production of collagen and elastin, as well as reversing signs of aging, preventing future damage and reducing symptoms of problem skin all without irritation and with the added benefits of anti-inflammatory properties. This gentle and lightweight serum works to improve skin elasticity and also repairs and soothes sun damaged and irritated skin. I actually meant to review this sooner but no time like the present now that I'm on my second bottle. This review is done in tandem with my last one because these are the two products that make up my current nighttime skincare routine.

My Experience
Oskia Super 16 Serum is milky in appearance with  a silky, fluid texture and a barely discernible fragrance. The elegant formulation which is a little tacky upon application absorbs into the skin instantly with a lightweight feel and it gives my skin a hydrating and plumping boost. I've been using it nightly as my primary serum and the only product I apply over it is the Sulwhasoo Radiant Energy Mask which I just reviewed here. Because this product contains a multitude of active ingredients with so many benefits, I don't really need to use anything else. I first tried this product last year after it was gifted to me by Oskia and it made such a difference in my skin, that I have since repurchased it and this my second bottle. That in itself should tell you how I feel about this lovely serum. It delivers similar results to retinol in terms of firmness, smoothness, clarity and softness. When using it, my skin is supple, clear and luminous and feels revitalized and I have never experienced any sensitivity, irritation or dryness.

Oskia is one of my favorite brands and I'm not at all surprised that they're at the forefront of this technology and deliver another winner with this product. It works and I'm pretty sure I will be going back to Oskia Super 16 again in the future. Oskia Super 16 Serum can be purchased at NetAPorterNordstrom, Space NK, and Oskia. Be sure to check out my other Oskia reviews.

I use prescription Tretinoin at the moment, it is best for my acne. Oskia is a great brand, I have tried many of their products and loved them.

The package is so gorgeous! This serum sounds like it would work well for my skin! I think I have a few products that are retinol based. Have a great week!

I have mixed feelings about retinol. I have read long term use can thin the skin and I have thin skin to begin with lol. Though this serum sounds decent but a bit pricey.

I have this serum in my wishlist for years but I can't justify the crazy high price. :-( I am definitely on a skincare diet too, these days I use very minimal products in my routine, 4 - 5 at most in comparison to 8-10 in the past and my skin is definitely better.
