How To Be Productive While Working From Home

Work From Home Tips

As current events change our world, I'm looking towards shifting my content to topics that are more relevant with the situation. Rest assured I won't be abandoning my regular content to maintain some sense of normalcy and offer some form of escape. With more people working from home now than ever I thought it would be appropriate to share some WFH tips since I've been fortunate enough to be able to do this for a number of years. Working from home has its pros like sleeping in, not having to commute and not having to dress up but it can also prove to be a challenge if you don’t have some sort of structure set up.

1. Establish A Routine
If you want to be productive, it’s really important to set up a routine for yourself when working from home. When you wake up, get out of bed, go through your usual AM routine and then sit down to work like you usually would. Since you’re eventually expected to be going to go back to work,  maintaining your regular schedule will make it that much easier to readjust.

2. Define Work Hours And Make Lists
This goes hand in hand with establishing a routine as it helps to provide more structure to your work days.  This will also help you manage your goals and tasks as well as help to make sure that you stay accountable and meet deadlines. Take a break for lunch as you usually would and try to "get off work" at your usual time. Also take tiny breaks throughout the day to give your brain a chance to recharge and focus and use these as opportunities to stretch out, move your body around and even better if you can go for a walk outside.

3. Have A Dedicated Workspace
Staying in bed or settling on your couch with your laptop may sound great and be comfortable but you may end up sitting in positions that may end up hurting your posture or back. Keep yourself, alert, productive and professional by setting up a workstation. Bonus points if it's in a quiet corner or next to a light filled window.

4. Get Dressed
Just because you don't have to get dressed up that doesn't mean you should be getting into a bad habit of hanging out all day in your pjs. You don't need to put on a suit and opt for comfy togs but just the simple act of getting yourself dressed in the morning can lift your mood which can help to put you in a positive headspace to be productive. Besides it's kind of unhygienic to wear the same clothes that you sit around and do whatever in all day into bed just like it's gross to not shower before going to sleep. Save the pajamas for bed.

5. Cut Out Distractions
Distractions like social media are good to limit from your life in general and you definitely want to eliminate as many distractions as possible when you're supposed to be at work. This will put you in a much better mindset to be productive and not waste your time.

I knew my husband was good at his job but with him working from home, I have gotten to witness  him in work mode firsthand it has given me a new appreciation for his tireless dedication, diligence and leadership.

Very useful tips, Rowena! I'm actually trying to put in practice all of them and I've been quite good... specially the first week. This second one was bit more tough. But I guess it's normal! I hope next week I'm god at it again ;)
Have a nice day!

It's nice to hear that you have an appreciation for your husband's work ethic, Rowena. I have been able to work from home for many years, even at my last job somewhat, so I definitely agree with these tips and employ them regularly. I hope you have a lovely weekend as best as you can. :) Thanks for sharing!

These are good tips! I don't always get dressed up to work from home as we don't use our webcams when we call each other, but on busy days I used to. Of course I'm in a lot more loungewear now I'm working from home every day instead of going into the office. At least I'm only working 3 days a week - hubby works 5 so I'm entertaining the kids on those 5 days while also trying to teach them and keep them quiet and do my own work. Rough times ahead, but it's better for them to be at home and I understand why the schools have closed.

Hope that you are having a nice weekend :) It's another quiet one at home here.

I'm not currently working from home. Sadly my job doesn't allow for it even though for a very minuscule part I do have to work from home. In the past I have had a job where I did work from home full-time and I definitely found having a routine and bit of structure like to-do lists and planned "break" times were essential for me. Not that I would stray from my tasks but more that I wouldn't stop and just power straight through the day hahaha!

Thank you for these awesome tips:)I really do think that having a dedicated workspace when working at home is the key, chingu! I don't know how people can work on the couch or their bed....I'd just be falling asleep or watching TV! And definitely having set hours helps. My older sis who's now working at home said it's hard for her sometimes to keep track of when to eat and finish work so she's been feeling more tired than usual. Not good:(
Stay safe, my friend, and I hope you feel better soon. XOXO

Getting dressed is a great idea to keep you fit and active. By doing this, we remind ourselves that we are going to work as a professional. I hope you are safe and healthy.

Have a great day honey <3

I agree, workspace is not in the bedroom!
Sounds great when we get dress, too.

Stay well!

As a teacher I get a lot of work done from home as it is, so this is not a huge change for me....but it is definitely harder teaching regular school online.
