Wish List

So I'm still committed to do better and be a better ally to the Black community. I will continue to educate myself and try to support and feature more Black owned brands as well as those which are are diverse and inclusive. As I've said before socially conscious spending with purpose is an actionable and impactful way to help bridge racial inequity and if enough people do this, it can facilitate meaningful change. This month's wish list features some Black owned brands which make incredible products while also making a difference.

Items acquired from last month's wish list:
The Koop New York Ocean Drive Candle
I have not burned it yet but the coconut, mango and sea salt scent smells divine!

1. lemlem Tikuri Cotton-Gauze Midi Dress
Founded by Ethiopian model Liya Kebede, lemlem partners with artisan studios that use traditional African motifs and techniques to create beautiful, modern designs. Five percent of lemlem’s sales go towards advancing the mission of the lemlem Foundation which helps women artisans in Africa thrive by connecting them to healthcare, education, and pathways to jobs. This light and airy dress handmade from black cotton-gauze that's locally sourced from Ethiopia is pure summer chic.

2. Soko Uzi Delicate Necklace
Soko was co-founded by Kenyan-born Catherine Mahugu, along with Gwendolyn Floyd and Ella Peinovich. SOKO works with artisan entrepreneurs to build their businesses, improve production capacity, and sustainably increase income. Their artisans use locally-sourced and eco-friendly materials whenever possible. Handcrafted by artisans in Kenya using traditional techniques,.this vintage-inspired 24K plated gold necklace with textural details would make a bold style statement while dressing up a variety of outfits.

3. Keds x Jungalow Champion Chorus Sneakers
Keds will donate 100% of net proceeds from sales of the Jungalow x Keds Champion In Chorus Sneaker to GirlTrek, a public health and self-care movement for Black women. The classic Champion sneaker gets a modern twist with original artwork by Jungalow founder, Justina Blakeney who created a watercolor print of a chorus of women that commemorates the legacy of women who have danced to their own tune while wearing the Champion sneaker.

4. Beneath Your Skin Heal Whipped Skin Soufflé
Following a critical bout with lupus, Dana Jackson began creating her own creams to remedy her skin rashes and stretch marks. The first product Heal: Whipped Skin Soufflé went on to become the hero of the range she would eventually create. An Allure 2019 Best of Beauty Winner, this  ultra-luxurious, nourishing, whipped skin soufflé with anti-bacterial, anti-aging and antioxidant properties is formulated to hydrate and strengthen skin, combat the effects of aging, reduce the appearance of stretch marks, maintain skin’s elasticity, reduce inflammation and protect skin cells from damaging free radicals. The brand's handcrafted serums, scrubs and moisturizers are made with potent, non-toxic ingredients so they are safe for the skin to absorb and will not challenge the immune system.

5. Organic Bath Co. PeaceFull Organic Body Butter
Upon discovering that women and particularly women of color are marketed toxic personal care products, this brand made a commitment to creating a straightforward, unisex bath and body line using nothing unnecessary, harmful or synthetic. This body made shea butter, sweet almond oil and argan oil sounds like such a hydrating and lovely treat for the skin.

6. Neck Traction Hammock
I've been using a neck traction pillow to get some relief from my neck/arm pain issues and a friend who had gone through something similar suggested that I try this hammock to stretch and relieve pain and tension. I asked my doctor about this and he said go for it. A little update: I got the results of my x-rays and they showed no nerve or structural damage which was a relief so I don't have to get an MRI. MRI's bring out the worst of my anxiety. I'm cleared to start physical therapy this week.

7. Simplehuman Rechargeable Liquid Soap Dispenser
I've lost count of how much wash my hands nowadays and I'm also constantly cleaning off our soap dispensers with fears over how many germs they have been accumulating because we're always touching them. To make things safer and more hygienic, I've been looking into  investing in no-touch sensor pumps. This sleek rechargeable one fits the bill and it is reasonably priced.

8. Mirth Rio Rainbow Stripe Dress
Made of  100% cotton fabric handloomed in rural India by skilled artisans, this charming sundress is crafted ethically and sustainably. The entire process takes place by hand, without the aid of electricity.

You have chosen such great things Rowena, I especially loved those dresses, the design, and length is perfect. These are looking comfortable too. The skin souffle sounds really great, I'm using a Korean brand's skin souffle that works well on my skin.
Have a great day.

The only thing I have from SimpleHuman is the vanity mirror but I know they have rubbish bins too. I will check for the sensor dispenser. And completely out of topic, are you watching It's Okay Not To Be Okay? It' my first kdrama in more than a decade and the only reason why I started catching snippets of it through YouTube because it popped up in my recommendations. I love that it highlights about mental illness and how it impacts the loves ones, the storyline is refreshingly different.

This is such a great list and it is wonderful you are giving support to marginalized groups. The dress is super pretty and I loved hearing about that skincare brand created by a person who has Lupus and wanted to make products that won't challenge the immune system. That's really inspirational.

That striped dress is beautiful and so perfect for summer! it's good that things are going well and you will be able to get physical therapy to fix your pain :)

I really like the sound of that candle too! What a lovely scent! I've been burning a lot of scented candles while working from home lately!

Hope that your week is going well :) It's a cold and wintery one here!
