In the accompanying interview, Hye Kyo fondly discusses her character Min Ja in the upcoming Netflix drama Slowly and Intensely which marks her third time working with acclaimed writer Noh Hee Kyung. She describes Min Ja as ambitious and ruthless: “She values success over love and spares no effort to achieve it. Watching her journey from the bottom to the top is tumultuous. Sometimes I feel sorry for her as a human. Even at home, thinking about Min Ja brings tears to my eyes.”
Hye Kyo also addresses her short hair transformation for the role, explaining, “I believe a character begins to take shape the moment you start thinking about their style. The writer mentioned that the Min Ja she imagined would have short hair and suggested the cut. She was worried about how short it would be for an actress. While it was a drastic change, I had no fear if it suited Min Ja.” It certainly doesn't hurt that this hairstyle looks amazing on her and she wears it so well. When she first cut her hair into a longer boy bob style last year, many people were inspired to to follow suit. Not surprising considering her massive influence within and beyond Korean entertainment. I have to admit I actually did get my hair cut like that and love the style so much that I'm still wearing it. I don't tend to find many celebrities to be aspirational in any way but she definitely is for me.
While there has been no official announcement on the release date of Slowly and Intensely, it is highly anticipated as Netflix Korea’s most ambitious project of this year, with a budget of 70 billion won (47 million USD. Hye Kyo has proven her drawing power with the global success of the revenge thriller The Glory, The powerhouse cast also includes Gong Yoo, Cha Seong Won and Lee Ha Nee. Set in the entertainment world of the 1960s–80s, the series explores ambition, trauma, and the price of fame. It will surely become a major moment for Korean drama in 2026.
In the meantime, I'm so excited that one of my favorite dramas Encounter will be coming to Netflix this week. I've watched it probably 3 times and am so due for a rewatch. It's easily one of my top 5 dramas for the characters, actors, artistic quality, cinematography, and music. It is really such a beautifully nuanced love story about two people who meet, fall in love, and overcome social norms to be together. This drama made me so happy the first time I watched it and I was so obsessed with the style of Song Hye Kyo's character Cha Soo Hyun's style that I got my hair cut like her and wore midi dresses and skirts with knee high boots that winter. Maybe I'll do that again ha. Do check out Encounter if you get a chance. It's a sublime drama I always recommend because it's watching it is like a comforting hug. And right now, we need all the comfort we can get.
