Chinese Celebrities at the Met Gala 2015

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala 2015 on May 4, celebrated the opening of China: Through The Looking Glass so it was only fitting that a number of notable Chinese celebrities were in attendance. Esteemed actress Gong Li who was one of the co-chairs of the event was resplendent in a sumptuous burgundy velvet Roberto Cavalli gown adorned with lace sleeves. The cheongsam/qipao inspired silhouette and ornate fan embroidered back paid tribute to the theme of the night in an elegant way and also proves that you don't have to bare skin to look sexy. Zhang Ziyi who was dressed by Carolina Herrera also captured the theme tastefully in her white mandarin collared gown that featured Chinese style knotted buttons and delicate floral embellishments. In my opinion there were really no missteps from any of these stars and thankfully none of them looked like they forgot to put their clothes on. If you're going to opt out of interpreting the theme, classy is the way to go.  Ni Ni was like a ray of sunshine in her yellow Ralph Lauren gown, Tang Wei looked exquisite in her shimmery crystal bedecked Burberry dress and Zhou Xun was ethereal in Chanel. I also have to mention how handsome Chen Kun was in his Burberry tuxedo. He cut his hair and it looks phenomenal again! Yes I know Fan Bingbing is missing and it was deliberate as I don't tend to feature people I don't care for.

The exhibition which is a collaboration between the Costume Institute and Department of Asian Art takes a look at the impact of the Chinese influence on Western fashion. It will be on view from May 7 through August 16 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The artistic director of the show is influential filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and I'm very much looking forward to seeing his creative vision come alive.

What do you think of these looks? Is there one that stands out to you?

Zhang Ziyi in Carolina Herrera
Ni Ni in Ralph Lauren
Gao Yuanyuan in Michael Kors
Zhao Wei in Michael Kors
Li Bingbing in Dior

I really liked the yellow and pale blue Michael Kors dresses. At least these girls kept it low-key and didn't go way to OTT like some other people.

I think everyone looked so so so gorgeous, and honestly, I think they brought such class to the event. Hated most of the outfits worn that night by celebs like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. Ugh.

Oh wow, Carina Lau looks the same as 10 years ago, she never seems to age?! Is she still married to Tony Leung? And Gong Li is always classy and sophisticated looking, like Carina Lau, she too never seems to age. Gorgeous!

Wow, all of these celebrities look so glamorous! I agree it's absolutely not necessary to bare skin in order to look sexy! I like the look of Gong Li, as well as Zhang Ziyi's dress! It's so beautiful, especially the up part of it! Or maybe it is her smile? Anyway, great looking people! Have a nice day, Rowena! xo

I really do like all the dresses except for the Burberry one (worn by Thang Wei). That dress seems very dull to me and I don't really see the connection with the theme. The Burberry suit on the other hand looks very elegant, but some accessory to connect it with the theme would be nice.

btw Neither of the M. Kors dress is exactly my cup of tea but at least they're interesting so I won't say that I don't like them.

Thank you for your comment...The illustration is actually a sketch of the necklace I'm planning to make so you were right on with the comment:)

That sounds like an interesting exhibit. I was really excited to see both Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi as I've enjoyed their movies. Gong Li's dress is beautiful.

I wasn't impressed in general with the dresses I saw, but these Chinese celebrities are definitely amongst the best dressed. My two favorites are Tang Wei in Burberry and Zhou Xun in Chanel. Both dresses are gorgeous on them!

oh my, Rowena! These looks that our Asian beauties are rocking are super gorgeous!

haha, yes I totally agree with you, you don't need to bare LOTS of skin to look sexy (look at them at the MET recently...I almost fainted, haha)

Personally, I don't quite like velvet the material, the one Gong Li is in, but she looks stunning! She is one of my favorite movie actress and she will always be that classic oriental beauty that I adore.

Tang Wei's dress really stood out to me the most. Those little details and pattern with a twist of that little cap tail. I also love Zhang Ziti's for its details on the bottom half and that little details on the collar. Nini's yellow is super refreshing.

Li Bingbing and Zhao Wei ones are really gorgeous too! Gao Yuanyuan one comes across as crumbled *_^ and Zhou Xun looks a little dated to me, I feel it makes her look older than she is.

Haha yes! I still love a man with a short hair cut, like Chen Kun here.

Overall, they definitely dressed way better than the celebs at the MET!! Thanks for sharing. Such great post. I really hope to read about your experience at the Museum as I love Wong Kar Wai's work *_^

I am super curious why you don't like Fan Bingbing, hahaha (for the record, she's not my fav either).

Have a great week Rowena!

Love,
Jeann

Love the velvet dress at the top .. stunning! and Michael K. is a classic:) The details on some of these dressing is incredible and really does compliment these gorgeous women. The petite bone structure and perfect skin tone brings out the colors and textures. I ........on the other hand, need to keep my dresses very simple. The details and pretty fluff just don't work on me :(

So pretty Rowena. Thanks for sharing! xxleslie

I pretty much love all the gowns as well for different reasons. Ooh and the winner is Gong Li - does the woman age and she is still so hot!
I'm curious about Fan Bing Bing - why is she not cool in your book (I don't know much about her)?
