Eye Candy : Ready To Fall In Love

Liu Wen Elle China, Liu Wen Elle

This themed Elle China editorial seemed like the perfect segue into the lunar new year which is tomorrow. Model Liu Wen is clad in an array standout looks in lucky red while playing with paper lanterns and practicing calligraphy.

This will be the year of the Fire Rooster which is marked by high energy and productivity for those who are willing to work diligently and practice some measure of patience. I would like to wish everyone who is celebrating a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year! Gong Hei Fat Choy! Xin Nian Kuai Le! 新年快樂! 恭禧发财!

Listening... to old school Cantonese music because it takes me to a comforting place. This catchy Candy Lo & Wang Lee Hom duet always gets a singalong. There was a rumor that Candy wrote this song about Shawn Yue after they broke up.

Reading... Eat Beautiful. Beauty expert/makeup artist Wendy Rowe dishes on how to achieve beauty from the inside out with the foods/recipes you should be eating to nourish your skin and body.

Watching... not much at the moment.

Embracing... hygge aka the Danish art of creating a warm atmosphere and making ordinary, every day moments more meaningful and special. It really aligns with the practice of quality over quantity.

Enjoying... our new refrigerator which has way more space than our old one. We will be filling up that freezer with homemade dumplings soon.

Giving up... cold beverages for good. I don't really ever drink anything ice cold but I'm cutting them out entirely.  This is why.  It has also been advised by my TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor and I really think there's something to it.

Loving... the Echo Dot we received for Christmas! We use it to play music, catch up on the news and weather and for quick facts and definitions. You can also apparently do a lot more with it which we really need to explore.

Looking forward to... Chinese New Year. which is this Saturday. My favorite holiday of the year. Of course we will be partaking in some of these lucky foods. And check out this primer on Chinese New Year customs.

Not looking forward to... 4 years of president fart (apparently trump is slang for fart in Britain).  Now more than ever we need to continually stay informed and stand up for what we believe in. #alternativefacts have no basis in reality. If they did, Obama would still be our president. Remember that midterms are just 2 years away.

Obsessed with this video of a cat riding around in a box wearing a hat made from his own fur... yep! It never ceases to give me a chuckle.

What's up with you?

Currently Coveting

Wish List

Somehow my wish list always seems to include a number of beauty products...  K-beauty continues to be my jam and green beauty is also up there.. How cool is it that Nordstrom now has a dedicated natural beauty shop? What are you coveting lately?

1. Herbivore Botanicals Blue Tansy AHA + BHA Resurfacing Clarity Mask
I'm currently in love with the Herbivore Botanicals Brighten Pineapple Enzyme + Gemstone Instant Glow Mask (check out my mini review!) so this mask which is supposed to be like a facial in a jar is next up.

2. CLE Cosmetics Melting Lip Powder
K-beauty never fails to blow me away with their innovations. This product transforms from a powder to a long-wearing lip tint when you put it on! Now that's pretty flipping cool.

3. ZIIP Beauty Nano Current Device
I became interested in beauty devices when I started using a long forgotten home microdermabrasion device regularly with positive results at the end of last year. The ZIIP Beauty Nano Current Device uses gentle electrical wavelengths to firm, brighten and banish fine lines, dark spots and acne. Some lofty claims and I'm definitely intrigued. My husband actually offered to buy this for me for my birthday but I can't justify the cost right now.

4. AMOREPACIFIC Moisture Bound Intensive Serum Masque
This unique two step ampoule mask works to instantly boost hydration, firmness, and radiance while an exclusive blend of 5 Asian botanicals work to restore and improve skin's ability to retain moisture. It sounds like a perfect solution for keeping dry winter skin at bay.

5. Rodin Facial Cleansing Powder
This cleansing powder that combines granular rice bran with moisturizing jojoba, sea algae along with olio lusso's signature Jasmine and Neroli scent allows you to customize your cleansing routine based on your skin's needs and your personal preference. Cleansing powders are such a lovely way to gently cleanse and clarify in the mornings. My husband and I currently share a bottle of Farmacy New Day Gentle Exfoliating Grains (review) which works equally well on our very different skin types and I think this would too.

6. Youth to the People Kale + TriPeptide 37 Vitamin C Age Prevention Firm and Brighten Serum
A high performance, firming and brightening serum loaded with kale and spinach for a healthy looking complexion. There's something really appealing about skincare which combines superfoods and science. I mean if it's good enough to eat, it's certainly good enough to put on your face.

7. KORRES  Greek Yoghurt Smoothie Priming Moisturiser
This double duty moisturizer and primer is packed with with 26 percent Greek yogurt proteins to deeply nourish and smooth skin, while prepping it for flawless makeup application and all-day wear. I'm already a big fan of their Suncare Yoghurt  Nourishing Fluid Veil so I'm thinking I might like this as well.

8. GLOSS Moderne High Gloss Serum
This unisex, luxury serum offers up brilliant shine, heat protection and control in a formula that is clean and cruelty-free.  I'm partial to multifunction hair care products and this sounds like one that my husband and I could share.

Eye Candy : Ji Chang Wook for Marie Claire

January 20, 2017
Ji Chang Wook, Ji Chang Wook Marie Claire, Ji Chang Wook Lotte Duty Free,, Ji Chang Wook 2017, 지창욱, Ji Chang Wook Fabricated City

I don't think it needs to be said anymore that Ji Chang Wook is a favorite around here. Ahead of the release of his film Fabricated City next month in which he plays an online gamer who goes on the run to clear his name after being framed for a crime, the handsome actor is making an appearance in Marie Claire Korea. The crime thriller marks Chang Wook's big screen debut and may be his last action project at least according to him. All the stunt work has been taking a toll and he wants to challenge himself beyond action. I passed on watching Chang Wook's last two projects but the trailer of Fabricated City looks pretty compelling. The first 3 photos of this editorial are absolutely beautiful especially the one above with that mesmerizing stare but the styling for the rest is a bit dodgy. What's with the long coat and weird boots and what does that teddy bear have to do with anything. Okay I'm just gonna go back to staring at the first photo...

Eye Candy : The Snow Queen

January 13, 2017
Harper's Bazaar UK, The Snow Queen

I'm definitely not one of those people who revels in winter since I absolutely cannot stand being cold but I can still appreciate the unique beauty of the season. This magical Harper's Bazaar UK editorial lensed by Alexandra Sophie that finds a resplendently attired Joséphine Le Tutour cavorting about a seemingly enchanted forest is definitely the stuff of fairytales and the type of winter one can only dream about! So how is winter treating you?

Maybelline Spring 2017

January 9, 2017
Maybelline Review, Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot Express Mascara, Maybelline The 24K Nudes Palette, Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner

I've been asked before why I don't feature drugstore products more and I'm not really sure. I have to admit I don't use a ton of them in my beauty routine but I pretty much always go with drugstore buys for mascara and eyeliner. Since these products have such a short life span, I generally don't feel comfortable splurging on them knowing that they have to tossed in a matter months. Maybelline New York recently sent me a few products from their best-selling Eye Studio collection of performance eye products designed to master the latest runway eye trends. I was excited to see that it included their recently launched Big Shot Mascara and Master Precise Eyeliner as well as their new 24K Nudes Palette. By the way, how cool is it that Manny Gutierrez was just announced as a new face of the brand!

Quality Over Quantity

Choosing Quality Over Quantity, How Quality Over Quantity Can Make You Happier, Less is More

Most people think of quality over quantity in terms of things but it can/should apply to all aspects of life.  The inherent value and sense of this principle is fairly obvious but somehow quantity still seems to be perceived as having more value in our society at large even though having more doesn't always translate into happiness. Sometimes less is more.

Choosing quality over quantity doesn't necessarily mean that you're choosing less over more but rather making better choices that ultimately lead to more satisfaction and fulfillment and a better quality of life. I've applied this several aspects of my life already and it has really opened up a path to a better sense of contentment and wellness overall.

Through My Lens : Recently On Instagram

January 4, 2017

A few highlights of the past month as seen on Instagram which serves as my unofficial food diary and love letter to NYC. I also post quick reviews here and there. The last month of the last year was a busy one and as much as I was looking forward to the year ending, I also didn't want to see it end for a number of reasons but now that 2017, we get a fresh slate of sorts which is always good. For more, click on over to Instagram and do follow if you like what you see...  A few IRL friends recently told me that they've been stalking my feed for food recs and they've actually been dining at the places that I've talked about. That like totally made my day!

  • NYC has no shortage of beautiful Christmas trees during the holidays but one of my favorites is the tree at One Beacon Court which looks even more majestic when fully illuminated at night.
  • Loving this range of Eva NYC hair products which are now available at Old Navy.
  • We finally got around to dining at Sushi of Gari in Tribeca and their Tuna of Gari is TDF! We want to go back and try the omakase next time.
  • Thanks to Allure for sending one of their beauty boxes for the holidays. The Tatcha Indigo Silk Body Butter is amazing!
  • When I'm uptown in December, I always make sure to stop by the Time Warner Center to take in the Holiday Under the Stars light show.
  • Saturday Skin is a new Korean beauty discovery. I showed incredible restraint during their sale and just ordered this Time Freeze Essence to get to know the brand. The packaging is fabulous!
  • This Pizza À La Truffe Noire was one of the things I tried at a fantastic lunch hosted by Bagatelle NYC and yes it did taste as good as it looks.
  • These bath and body treats from Aveda are great because they're as comforting as they're invigorating.
  • New York always seems to at it's most magical just when the sun rises or sets.

When To Toss Your Makeup

January 2, 2017
Makeup Expiration Dates, When To Throw Away Your Makeup

Happy New Year! May 2017 bring you all good health, infinite happiness, lovely surprises and many new & fun adventures! I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. I know I did and it was really great to unplug, unwind and also GSD! With my husband's help, I completed a home project that involved major re-organization and certain upgrades and transitions. This was as much about improving our daily quality of life as much as continuing down a path of wellness and living with intention.

I had downsized my makeup stash quite a bit already but I went all out and finished the process last month. A few items may have initially been harder to part with because the packaging was really pretty or because they were hardly used. I've always been mindful about tossing my mascaras every 3 months or so but as I was cleaning, I started thinking about some of the other products which I've been less vigilant about. All makeup products do in fact have expiration dates and will go bad. In time, products can reformulate and stop working effectively or they can cause irritations and infections due to bacteria buildup. Ewww! So even though it may be a drag to keep track of how old your beauty products are, it is important to do so for both your health and the health of your skin.
