Walk too quickly down west Eighth Street and you might just hit Sixth avenue before realizing that you walked right past Neta. The unassuming sushi bar from Masa alums Nik Kim and Jimmy Lau is known for their quality sushi and modern Japanese small plates sits behind the block of light grey curtains and nondescript black facade. The narrow minimalist space is sparsely decorated with wood and granite. Tables are set up in the front and on the side wall but the centerpiece of the dining room is this the long maple topped bar which also happens to where the best seats are since one can observe the entire space as well as artful food preparations in the bustling open kitchen.
We ended up dining there at lunch during Restaurant Week and yes if you're wondering, their RW menu does include dishes that are on their regular menu. We commenced our meal with the sushi and a spicy tuna roll. Both were delicately prepared and presented and delicious. The sake ikura donburi and bigeye akami tuna poke bowl were enjoyably fresh and flavorful. The dropoff was at dessert which we probably wouldn't have bothered with if they weren't included. The monaka ice cream sandwich which was supposed to be a play on peanut butter and jelly was weird and the green tea panna cotta was cloyingly sweet with an odd grainy texture. Despite that, it was still a satisfying dining experience with personable and attentive service and it was fun to watch the chefs at work with deft precision. We would return to try their omakase but definitely pass on dessert.

I know you don't have much of a sweet tooth, but dessert is so important to me, that would be a maior disappointment. But to be honest, I have always been disappointed with dessert at sushi restaurants I visited, maybe they are just not what I am used to and I should stop trying.

I never order dessert at sushi restaurants...
The presentation of food is really elegant and it looks delicious!

Yummy, you made me want sushi while is breakfast time lol! Despite the dessert, is truly a lovely place where going. Kisses! xo
I love sushi so this place its calling my name thanks for sharing.
Totally drooling over these pics, Rowena. Yes....even the dessert:D Living in NYC and being a foodie must be heaven, chingu! You guys literally have EVERYTHING! #jealous
Hope you have a fab day:)
I am not a panna cotta fan but I do enjoy sushi at least once a week. This sounds like a pretty decent place since I typically never order dessert out and make it at home. Being able to see the chefs do their magic is always fun to see at sushi restaurants. Thanks for sharing, Rowena!
Love dining out! The salmon roes caught my attention, dear!

Some of these proud Japanese restaurants are like they don't want to be found or something. Isn't our favorite Takahachi like that, too? They don't really have a big sign up and sometimes I pass by not noticing then go back up on the street. LOL.
I love ikura and that bowl dish looks really pretty. I assume ikura is treated with sake? Would love to try out this place soon. :)
I think I'm the only person I know who hasn't tried sushi lol. The presentation of the food looks perfect!
I love the minimalist look of it, it`s a style I try to incorporate and good service is always important, I think it sets the tone as well.

NYC really does seems like a food haven, Rowena. Is dining out a very expensive affair in NYC? I wish the small town I live in has a huge variety of restaurants to dine in, my husband and I love trying different places to eat but alas, we have very limited options here which is why I cook a lot.
This sounds like a nice experience - beside the dessert, that is! I have to admit, I have a (massive) sweet tooth and so this would be a deal-breaker for me, haha :) I can imagine it must be nice to be seated watching the food being prepared!

I love New York and I also love sushi so Neta looks like the perfect place for me. You inspired me to order dessert next time I get sushi.
I remember from your previous posts that dessert is not that important to you, so I imagine that it wasn't a big disappointment having a dessert you could easily pass on. Delicious tuna and sushi rolls must have more than made up for it:). It seems you had a lovely dinning experience. It is good to hear they had the same selection of dishes during RW as they usually do. It is always fun trying out some new place...and RW seems like a great time to do it.
Hi sweetheart, that seems a nice place! Everything look so delicious :)
Kisses

If sushi did not exist, I would be dead. LOL
Sounds like the kind of place to stay away from the desserts. I almost never do dessert, only place i do dessert is Frankie's for their Creme Brûlée
