10 Things I Need For The Summer

Summer Living, Summer, Summer Essentials, Summer Lifestyle, Things I love about summer

I've been looking forward to summer all winter long but now that it's finally arrived, I'm reminded of what I don't enjoy so much about the season - specifically the sweltering heat and getting sweaty and gross. While I can't really avoid the heat entirely, there are things that I can do keep my cool and make the most of summer.

Sun Protection for My Face
Sun protection is must for all seasons but even more so during the summer when the sun is more intense. KARYNG Complete Broad Spectrum SPF 50 has been my go to sunscreen for the face. This all in one sunscreen, anti-aging moisturizer and makeup primer is formulated with protective Echinacea Purpurea Extract, Coconut Oil, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc and Iron Oxide. This sunscreen glides on smoothly, has an incredibly lightweight texture and can be used on it's own for light coverage which is great when it's sweltering and I don't want to layer a bunch of products on my face. Read my full review of this product.

Sun Protection for My Body & Hair
Of course I can't forget about the rest of me when it comes to sun protection. Supergoop Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C SPF 50 has been a favorite for years. The antioxidant rich formula delivers broad spectrum protection without any white cast or residue. I still rub it into my skin but the 360 degree spray nozzle makes it a breeze to apply.  It can be used on wet or dry skin during sun exposure and is water resistant up to 80 minutes. I always spritz Fekkai Pré-Soleil Hair Radiance and Protection Mist on my hair when I know I'm going to be walking around in the city. Not only does it protect it but it also keeps frizz at and makes my hair smooth and shiny. For added protection, I try to stay in the shade and sometimes use an umbrella.

Self Tanner
The only way to tan is to self-tan. My current favorite product to fake a summery glow with is the James Read Coconut Melting Tanning Balm. It's made with organic coconut oil, smells divine and infuses my skin with rich moisture and a dose of natural looking bronze color. I only have to apply it twice a week to maintain the glow and the balm format is virtually mess free.

Stylish Shades
A collection of chic and stunning glasses is definitely something to flaunt during the warmer months or on vacation. You can't go wrong with a pair of classic Gucci glassses, which will not only look stylish, but they’ll help you see the sights too! Glasses and sunglasses are a fundamental element when it comes to accessorizing our outfits so have some fun putting together a collection.

Cool Clothes
I'm all about lightweight clothing in natural fibers when it's hot and breezy dresses are my favorite thing to wear. I recently picked up this cute J. Crew dress and it couldn't be more perfect for summer. Yes I do purchase off my own wishlists!

Deodorant
Heat means sweat but sweat doesn't have to mean odor. I made the switch from conventional deodorant years ago since studies have linked it to breast cancer tumors. Finding a natural and non-toxic option that works has been a process until I discovered Agent Nateur No3 Deodorant. It has a lovely clean scent and it keeps me smelling fresh through the day. Bonus points for the gorgeous packaging.

Waterproof Mascara
I definitely pare down my beauty routine during the warmer months and mascara remains one of my few must haves to make my eyes look refreshed and awake. I usually make the switch to a waterproof version for the summer. Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara is keeping the running and panda eyes at bay.

Bug Repellent
I don't like bugs. I don't want them near or on me and I don't want them coming into our apartment when I have the terrace door open. I also live with a man who hates bugs even more than I do. We keep them at bay with ultrasonic pest repellents which may sound excessive but it works and makes us feel better. For added measure, we also burn citronella candles and when I go to the park I wear one of these bracelets. I did mention I don't like bugs and I don't like bug bites either.

Lots of Liquids
I'm generally pretty vigilant about my water intake and I make staying hydrated a priority in the summer. I don't wait until I'm thirsty to drink and it may sound a little crazy but I swear by hot drinks to cool down. Ice a is a big no no.

Some Tried and True No Cook/Minimal Cooking Recipes
I cook all year round but I'm less enthusiastic during the warmer months cause who wants a hot kitchen when it's already hot. This cold sesame noodle dish (recipe) and cucumber salad (recipe) are summer staples.  Tacos, quesadillas, kimbap, salads and grain bowls also work well for us. I have plans to attempt some lettuce wraps and summer rolls soon. With the gas situation in our building, I have not turned on our stove/oven this summer and I don't even miss it. The new induction burner is working out really well and it doesn't heat up the kitchen at all.

Deodorant, proper and work appropriate clothing and of course SPF. I should really invest in one for the hair, too, I have been slacking in that department.

I love that J Crew ruffle eyelet dress, Rowena:) So perfect for summer indeed. I think I need it in orange:D For sure, one thing I always need for summer is tons and tons of sunscreen for the whole family. I keep telling the kids that even if the sun is not out all the time, it's always good to wear it. They don't believe me, but I know they'd thank me later:P
Have a great Monday, chingu!

Couldn't agree more about the bugs and the bug bites. That bug bracelet sounds like a cool and stylish idea. Need to get one. Happy new week, Rowena.

Your bug repellent entry made me laugh - how your husbands hates bugs more than you :)
We hate them too but it's almost inevitable that they come into our home although we try our hardest to keep them out. We worked on our yard yesterday and right now we rely on Badger products (although with these you really have to use small amounts and rub in well) and also The Honest Company. It works for me but mosquitos seem to love Yangkyu and they bite him through his clothes. I used to love summer but the summer bug months are a killer here and so now I look forward to a semi cooler fall season.

I have to wear sunscreen especially on my face, it’s so important. Bug repellent is super important also, and lots of water a must.

I'm definitely trying to keep my fluids up this year, I don't think I'm very good at remembering to drink all of the time usually but I know it's so important.

Sun protection is essential. It's also great to hear you've switched from traditional deodorants. I use a great natural deorodrant, I've stopped using antiperspirant deodorants almost 4 years ago now. Have a great week, Rowena.

Spa, spa, shorts and lots of hydration for me. I have seen those bug repellant bracelets but have been under the impression that they are gimmicky, good to know that they actually work.

I tried the Glossier shield and that's worked well for sun protection - even here in Texas!
