Saromae Quintessential Snail Serum Concentrate

Hanbang which stands herbal treatment is a holistic form of skincare that has been integral to K-beauty for quite some time since it is based on the healing system of traditional herbal medicine which has been in practice for over 2,000 years. Hanbang skincare is all about creating balance with plant and flower based ingredients like ginseng, green tea, lotus root, ginger and licorice. Popular hanbang beauty brands include Sulwhasoo and History of Whoo while a number of other K-beauty brands like Missha and The Face Shop also have dedicated hanbang lines with their product range. I'm personally a big fan of hanbang beauty because you can't really argue with centuries old wisdom and I have found a number of products which have worked for me. The product I'm reviewing today is a hanbang beauty product that combines herbal medicine science with modern science.

Snail mucin/filtrate is scientifically and dermatologically proven to be highly effective and beneficial when it comes to skin cell regeneration and repair so it works to firm, replenish moisture as well as even out skintone by reducing hyperpigmentation and fading scars. The composition of snail mucin is over 90% water and it is rich in nutrients like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, elastin and copper peptides. Saromae Quintessential Snail Serum Concentrate contains 62% pure snail filtrate extract which offers the perfect balance of effectiveness while eliminating the any textural issues of 100% snail secretion. This is notable since the consistency and quality of the snail mucus are key to a good product. While snail secretion filtrate is commonly used in Korean beauty products today, the practice of snail slime in beauty dates back to ancient Greece, where Hippocrates reportedly used crushed snails and sour milk to cure inflammation.

Skincare products with snail mucin have been called into question for the method in which the ingredient is obtained. Saromae Quintessential Snail Serum Concentrate is a cruelty free product and SMD Cosmetics does not support animal cruelty or testing. Their process does not involve extraction of of any kind. The snails are placed onto a bumpy surface which stimulates their mucus production. The mucus is then collected to be processed and filtered multiple times to increase its concentration and ensure its purity. SMD extracts only the essential and effective elements of the mucus for their unique formula.

Saromae Quintessential Snail Serum Concentrate is packaged in a luxurious pearlescent jar. While jars are not my favorite type of packaging, I do appreciate that this one is in such a gorgeous recyclable glass jar and does include a spatula for usage. So the product itself has a viscous, watery texture and a barely perceptible fresh herbal scent. There is none of the tackiness that you would usually find in snail mucin product and it absorbs easily with a cooling and lightweight feel on the skin. This definitely feels lighter than most serums so I had been using it following my essence. It has very nice hydrating and smoothing properties. I usually notice that the overall condition of my skin improves when I have any type of snail product in my regimen and it's no different with this one.  It's a pleasure to use and really like it. I look forward to going back to using this product after I finish up my minimal skincare routine trial.

Saromae Quintessential Snail Serum Concentrate can be purchased directly from SMD Cosmetics and the brand also sells through Amazon.

Have you ever tried any products with snail mucin?

Thanks to everyone who sent their well wishes on my MRI!  I'm happy to report that I received good news with my results and this latest ankle injury is nothing serious. I even resumed working out with caution.

I have not tried any products with snail mucus yet, and with the debate about it is "harvested" I am not too keen to jump onto the bandwagon. Don´t get me wrong, I believe in their cruelty free claims and not talk about that brand in particular. I guess I will just get my glycolic acid fix from the lab.

I'm a big fan of anything with snails, Rowena:D My two fave masks (one from The Face Shop and one from Leaders, I think) both use snail mucus, and I have a sample of a Missha moisturizer that has this too. I just think it really does wonders for the skin, you know? Thanks for the heads up about this brand. Sulwhasoo is readily available here but I have yet to see Saromae!

Have a lovely Monday, chingu:)

Hmm snail mucus. Sounds off putting but I bet it does a good job as long as it is cruelty free it may be worth trying out, love the packaging.

I have never tried anything with snail mucus but have read plenty articles supporting the claims that it's beneficial to the skin. I plan to try lower end brand first, Corsx and see how I enjoy it before investing in a pricier product. Great review, Rowena!

Amazing post. I've never tried this serum but the packaging is so amazing - very classic and elegant. Ginseng, Licorice and Niacinamide? You don't have to tell me more about it, I've already wrote the name down to get it next time :D I've tried some products with snail mucin - I think that benton essence has it and some sheet masks with snail mucin, it's a really nice ingredient :)

I've been seeing more of the snail mucin in many Asian skincare products lately, including sheet masks! I always thought it was strange and never really thought about it much in detail. Great to hear that this serum is smooth and hydrating!

I have some under eye patches with snail as the star ingredient that I enjoy, but they don't have the mucousy feel to them so they're okay. :)

Yikes! Ankle injury? I'm glad you're okay, and I hope you're back to normal soon!
