Happiness is a Journey, not a Destination

May 28, 2018
Happiness, Happiness Everyday

The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things. "
Henry Ward Beecher

Happiness is one of life's great goals but too often we actually make it a pursuit when in fact  happiness should not be dependent on the outcome of certain events. While this type of focus helps us strive for more, it can also lead to a belief that happiness can only be attained  through completing accomplishments or acquiring certain things. This can lead to a preoccupation with wanting more so that we are no longer satisfied with what we already have which takes our attention away from the beauty of present moments and everyday joy.

The little things which we might take for granted at times are often the biggest things and the ones which truly make life worth living. Here’s to appreciating the little things. This is my list of 21 things that make me happy…

 •  Watching the sunset or the sunrise

 •  Finding a rainbow after the rain

 •  When something makes me laugh so hard that my stomach hurts

 •  Waking up to the sight of my husband next to me and that feeling of winning the husband jackpot

 •  Daily snuggles with my husband

 •  Conversations with my husband about everything and nothing

 •  Random phone calls or texts from my husband just to say I love you

 •  My husband's dancing

 •  The feel of fresh sheets against my skin

 •  When my apartment is totally clean

 •  Coming up with a new dish with whatever is hanging around in my refrigerator and it's amazing

 •  When the song that I was just thinking of pops up on my iTunes

 •  When a photo turns out exactly as I had visualized it

 •  Finding money or something I forgot about

 •  Getting everything done on my to-do list

 •  Receiving a random act of kindness and paying it forward

 •  A good hair day

 •  When my husband rubs my feet

 •  When the bus/train pulls in just as I get to the station

 •  When the Yankees win

 •  Walks down by the river

What are some little things that make you happy?

  6. What a great post to read on a Monday morning, chingu:) Thank you. It's so easy to forget that it is, indeed, the journey that we should treasure and not always the outcome. Now, as I get older, I find I'm just grateful for being able to wake up and see my husband and the kiddos.
    Happy Monday, my friend.:)

  8. These are great, one thing that makes me happy is when I get up in the morning and I see the stray cat I feed sleeping in the bed I left outside for him.

  16. What a lovely post! I read somewhere that people who enjoy the little things are the happiest. I do believe that it is so important to take the time to enjoy the little things. Your list is adorable! It's so romantic that so many things that make you happy has to do with your husband, I think that proves you're a happy couple. I love waking up next to my husband as well. A cup of tea or coffee also makes me happy. Sea view or river/lake view is something that makes me feel calmer (and hence happier) as well. I love watching mountains (I'm really fortunate in that in all of the cities I've lived in my love I was always surrounded my mountains!) Teaching also makes me happy, especially teaching kids, it's so rewarding.

  19. This is such a lovely post and reading your list of what makes you happy made me smile too. I've learned that it's not the material goods but often these small moments and experiences in life that bring me true joy. Like right now, I'm sitting in bed with my cat snuggling up against me and I'm just thinking "I could sit here all day and be perfectly content"!
