10 Things You Should Know About Microblading

Microblading, 10 Things You Should Know About Microblading, Things To Know About Microblading, Microblading Facts

Eyebrows are an important feature because they frame the face. The shape and definition of your eyebrows can actually soften as well as enhance your appearance. While some people are lucky to have naturally full brows, those who are less fortunate have to create the look with makeup. This is probably why microblading has become so popular. The fairly low maintenance, semi-permanent process can be the answer to those looking to achieve the perfectly shaped and fuller eyebrows of their dreams with little to no effort. I had my brows microbladed over the summer and I will detail my experience in a separate post but first I wanted to share some knowledge I picked up to help you figure out if microblading is right for you.

1. What Is Microblading?
Microblading is a process in which cosmetic tattoo pigments are applied on the skin with incredibly fine sterile needles that resemble blades. Individual hair strokes are drawn onto the brow to fill in sparse or missing eyebrow hair with the appearance of simulated hair. Unlike a traditional tattoo which uses a pulsating  machine to push color into the skin, microblading is a completely manual process which creates a greater sense of control for a more natural look.

2. How Long Does It Take
Microblading is a two part process. The initial appointment generally lasts around two to two and a half hours from start to finish. You and your artist will discuss your expectations and desired brow look. Your artist will create a template and make adjustments until you are satisfied. The microblading process itself takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Following the first appointment, you will return for a follow-up six to eight weeks later after the skin is healed. Your artist will then make any adjustments as needed to the color, density or shape. This will take about an hour to an hour and a half.

3. How Long Does It Last
Microblading only penetrates the top layer of skin making it a semi-permanent procedure that lasts for up to 18 months as the pigments are designed to break down and fade over time. An annual touch up treatment is recommended for maintenance purposes.

4. Who Is Microblading Suitable For?
Microblading is safe for all complexions and skin types, however it isn't suitable for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing are not good candidates and it is not recommended for anyone who is undergoing chemotherapy or on blood thinning medications. If you've had botox injections to lift your brow area, make sure it's done at least 2 weeks before your microblading appointment as it will affect the placement of shape and design.

5. Your Skin Type Matters
While it can be done on all skin types, dry skin is better suited for microblading since it takes and retains pigment and the crispness of the strokes better. since oily skin tends to inhibit the fine detail of the thin line of pigment. While the "hair strokes" may initially appear crisp and defined, as the skin heals the oils pull the pigment which results heals in a softer, blurry look  after the end of the exfoliation stage. The pigment also fades faster over long term on oily skin. The powder or ombré brow technique is better for oily skin.

6. Does Microblading Hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied onto the brow area prior to the procedure to temporarily numb the area and relieve any pain so there will be very little to no discomfort. There may be some redness and mild swelling following but it’s generally mild enough that it won't bother you.

7. Microblading Doesn't Stop Natural Hair Growth
The belief that microblading will impact your natural hair growth is a myth. When done correctly, microblading shouldn’t have no effect on your natural hair growth. In some cases it might actually stimulate hair growth.

8. Choosing The Right Microblading Artist Is Key
When deciding on an artist or facility, you need to do your research. There are several factors to keep in mind. Safety is all important so make sure that all instruments used are properly sanitized and that the facility is clean and comfortable. In addition to their credentials and reputation, consider the aesthetic style of the artist you choose. Every artist's work is different, which means your brows can look different depending on the artist who works on them. Look at their work to assess and make sure that their style can match the type of results you're looking to achieve. If possible, have a consultation by phone or in person. Communication is an important part of the process. You need to be able to clearly explain exactly what you want and the artist needs to manage your expectations realistically as well as effectively explain the process and how to take care of your brows afterwards. Making sure that you and your artist are on the same page will help to eliminate unsatisfactory results.

9. Microblading Is An Investment
It’s no secret that microblading is an expensive procedure. The prices can vary based on location and demographics and generally range between $500 to $1,000. Of course you want to choose someone within your budget but do not base your decision based solely on the price. You're better off waiting if it comes down to a cost issue. This is something that needs to be done correctly by an artist that suits your style since this is a major feature on your face and something you will have to live with

10.  What Happens Afterwards
Immediately following your treatment, your brows will be noticeably bolder, darker and sharper. You will be provided with an aftercare treatment that should be applied to your brows two to three times daily and you will need to follow the aftercare instructions for best result. This includes not getting your brows wet, avoiding any activity that will cause excessive sweating and no makeup on the brow area for the first week to keep the pigment from bleeding or running. Keep the area clean by gently wiping around it. There may be some mild flaking or scabbing during the exfoliation process and it's important not to pick at them since that can pull out the pigment and lead to a loss of color in those spots. You will also need to make certain lifestyle changes like keeping your brows out of direct sunlight, using SPF and avoiding using any products designed to exfoliate, speed up our cell turnover or lighten like retinol, AHAs and vitamin C on the brow area to keep your brows from fading prematurely.

Now that you know some of the facts, you can make an informed decision on whether microblading is right for you.

Special thanks to Kendra at Better Brows & Beauty (who did my brows) for her help with this feature!

I only have one small hole in my brow, otherwise I am pretty happy with how they look, so Microblading isnt for me. It is amazing for people that are less fortunate though, really might save some time when getting ready.

This is such a great info "sheet" for microblading, chingu! I didn't even know it only lasts for 18 months and that you have to touch up yearly. I know some people who really want this done but hesitate because they think it's super painful. Good to know it's really not:)
Hope you had an awesome vacay in Hawaii:)
