It’s a brand new year, and everywhere you look, people are talking about setting goals or working towards new objectives. Around a third of adults don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. There are many reasons why people struggle to sleep, but often, there are simple solutions. One of the easiest ways to improve your chances of high quality sleep is to implement a sleep routine. We tend to think of routines as something we put in place for young children but they are also beneficial for adults. If you go to bed and get up at the same time every day, you should find that your body clock adjusting to a regular bedtime. If you nod off in front of the TV at 1 am one day, and you’re in bed trying to get to sleep at 10 pm the next, you may find it hard to sleep. Set a time to go to bed every night and try to get up at the same time every morning. Experts recommend around 7 - 8 hours of sleep per night. Good sleep hygiene will help you to prepare for bed. Spend your evenings doing activities that help you to relax and unwind. Take a bath, read a book, watch TV or listen to music. Avoid caffeine and make sure your bedroom is a cool, tranquil and calming space.

Pay Attention To Your Lifestyle Habits
The festive season is traditionally a time for indulgence, but if you’ve noticed that you’re still drinking more than usual, or you’re taking prescription medication or recreational drugs as a coping mechanism, it’s essential to understand that help is available. A couple of drinks a day or a higher dose of painkillers than recommended can quickly spiral into a condition that you don’t have control of, so it’s wise to reach out and get help as soon as possible. There are many treatment options and sources of support, including programs run by centers like Sunshine Behavioral Health, nonprofit helplines, medication and help from doctors and therapists. Keep a close eye on your lifestyle habits and the impact they have on your behavior, your mood and your general health and wellbeing. If you have concerns, speak to people you trust and seek expert advice.

Embrace Self-care
Self-care has been a big buzzword for that past few years. It is a popular concept because it involves looking after yourself and being proactive in protecting and nourishing your body and mind. Exercise regularly, eat well and devote time to activities and hobbies you enjoy and being around people you love and want to spend time with. Get a handle on managing stress by taking control of your calendar, ensuring you get enough rest and schedule breaks. Spend more time outdoors and create a positive home environment. Talk to friends and family or see a therapist if you want to get things off your chest, and try to maintain a positive mindset.

Prioritizing your health this year is an excellent new year’s resolution. Consider following these simple steps if you want to boost your happiness and wellbeing in the weeks and months ahead.
