Dine Out : Cafe Gitane

Cafe Gitane Review,Cafe Gitane New York, Café Gitane

Café Gitane in Nolita used to be quite the scene where the "cool" people hung out but I always had a soft spot for it because of the food. It had been at least a year since my last visit prior to having dinner with Lena there over the summer. I'll chalk that one up to new spots constantly popping up in NYC that I want to try.  This cozy bistro which has both indoor and outdoor seating has a distinctly European feel both in the decor and atmosphere. The menu features a range of French Moroccan fare with a number of solid options.

We ordered a few of their signature dishes to share including the Moroccan couscous which is one of their most popular and well known. It is as beautifully presented as it is delicious. The bright flavors of the eggplant, red peppers, potatoes, hummus and pine nuts work well together. I don't even mind the raisins in the dish and I usually think that raisins ruin everything. We also got the organic chicken satay with peanut sauce, carrot salad and jasmine rice and the smoked trout salad with black lentils, walnuts, dried cranberries, arugula, avocado, goat cheese and cherry tomatoes. Everything was enjoyable and our meal was filling without being heavy which is something I really like about their food. Most of the dishes are sharable. The service was affable and courteous. I shall try not wait another year before dining here again. If you stop by, be sure to try the couscous!

I agree, raisins ruin every dish indeed. Great to hear that this one was that good that not even that mattered.
