Why Scalp Care Is The Key To Great Hair

Why Scalp Care Is The Key To Great Hair, Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp

Healthy, shiny, bouncy hair is a hair goal for many. But what some people may not realize is that this all starts with a healthy scalp. The all important scalp is the underlying skin area beneath our hair which contains a multitude of blood vessels that sustain and transport all the nutrients our hair needs for growth, volume and shine. Therefore the condition of your hair directly correlates with the health of your scalp. Think of caring for your scalp as a skincare routine for your hair. If your scalp is in good condition, your tresses will in turn be smooth and silky. However when your scalp is unhealthy, you’ll experience issues like excessive oiliness, hair loss, and dryness as well as irritation like itching and peeling.

Briogeo's Scalp Revival range is a clinically-proven collection of products dedicated to the brand's  hair philosophy which is rooted in scalp care. This "skincare" regimen for your hair transforms the scalp with ingredients like binchotan charcoal, biotin, tea tree oil and witch hazel which work to calm irritation, itchiness, flakes and dry scalp. Like all Briogeo products, this entire collection is cruelty-free, ethically sourced and formulated without any sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, DEA or artificial dyes.

It’s important to exfoliate your scalp just as you would your skin and this shampoo is specifically formulated to treat dry, irritated, and flaky scalp and/or product buildup. Binchotan charcoal draws out impurities from the scalp and hair follicle while vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators remove dead skin cells and product buildup. A cooling blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness and tea tree oil reduces scalp irritation and inflammation while coconut oil moisturizes to prevent dryness and flakiness. This is a low lathering shampoo that leaves my scalp and hair feeling refreshed, revitalized and deeply cleansed. I don't have a dry scalp but I like to use this weekly to remove buildup. It has worked even better for my husband who does have a dry scalp.

Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment
$32 (30 ml/ 1 fl.oz)
This unique, charcoal-infused scalp treatment that detoxifies, soothes, and balances the scalp for optimal scalp health can be used on both wet or dry hair. The water based treatment can be used as a daily serum for a quick refresh/detox or a scalp care mask. I didn't try this but I did have my husband use it as a pre-shampoo treatment to treat his scalp which sometimes get irritated during the winter from wearing hats. He found it be soothing and relieving and it helped to reduce itching. His hair looked bouncier too.

Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo
$24 (50 ml/ 1.7 oz)
Made with a complex of charcoal, clay, tapioca and rice starches, this refreshing dry shampoo that detoxifies, cleanses and absorbs excess oil to balance the scalp for optimal scalp health. I rely on dry shampoo since I don't wash my hair too often. This one is nice and light with a clean scent and it really works to revive and freshen my hair giving it new life and volume. It's been a real hair saver since I've gone back to heavier bangs again.

Taking care of your scalp and using the right products is definitely important for scalp and hair health but it is also important to have good habits. Here are some other things you can do.

1. Watch How You Wash
Contrary to popular belief washing your hair too often can actually exacerbate oil production and make your hair oilier. Dandruff, itching and persistent flaking can also be caused by excessive washing as these are symptoms of a dry scalp. When washing don't use too much shampoo and make sure to rinse well. Avoid hot water which can damage the scalp causing irritation and scaliness.

2. Be Gentle
Go easy on the heat. Excessive heat styling can result in serious hair damage to the outer cuticle leading to split ends, dullness, brittleness, flyaways, and an increased susceptibility to breakage. Use thermal protective products and try letting your hair air dry a little before styling. Skipping heat altogether once in awhile helps too. Also remember to be gentle when brushing or combing.

3. Massage
Massaging your scalp on a regular basis stimulates circulation to the scalp to help hair become stronger and more resilient. You can use your fingertips to apply gentle pressure. This will help the area to feel more relaxed and supple. This technique can also be used while shampooing or applying  treatment or styling products. A tool like the Briogeo Scalp Revival Stimulating Therapy Massager can be wonderful to encourage regular scalp. I love how how it feels soothing and invigorating at the same time as it helps to release tension.

4. Use The Right Products
Aways carefully choose products that are appropriate for your hair type as well as the goal you are trying to achieve. Try avoiding products with dyes, salts, and detergents will because these can damage your skin in a gradual way. And don't use too much product. No matter your hair type, most everyone can benefit from a clarifying or scalp cleansing product from time to time.

5. Eat A Healthy Diet
Your diet has a direct effect on your overall wellbeing as well as the health of your skin and hair. Consuming foods rich in omega 3, vitamins A & C, and certain minerals will help your hair to be shiny and full. These include oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines, nuts, flaxseeds, yogurt, and dark leafy vegetables like spinach, Swiss Chard and broccoli.

The Briogeo Scalp Revival range can be purchased at Sephora, Nordstrom, NetAPorter, Space NK and Briogeo. The Briogeo Scalp Revival Scalp Soothing Travel Kit offers an easy way to try all of these products.

What do you do to take care of your scalp?

I've always liked charcoal as a gentle detoxifier and bought a few different facial masks that have this as the main ingredient. Charcoal-infused detoxifying shampoo sounds very effective and I am intrigued! I think Vitabrid offers a purifying shampoo shot with charcoal as well. I wonder how they would compare.

Ah this so true, one of my half brothers is a tricologist. I want to get one of those scalp massagers. And I was using a charcoal shampoo for a while. And indeed much of what you said on my latest post is too true. Many people are acting like nothing is going on. I went for a walk the other and I thought maybe there would be more people walking around as this is the only thing you should be doing, but I didn't really what I saw was A TON of cars driving around it was like any other Saturday. I saw no difference. This why Macron and other leaders in Europe had to take more drastic measures, no one was abiding. People are going to bring martial law on to themselves through their own selfish stupidity. If you are going to act like an entitled spoiled brat, then you are going to be treated like an an entitled spoiled brat that is being shipped off reform school...

I love the exfoliating shampoo and uses it once a fortnight. I don't do much with my hair but I avoid sulphates in my shampoos and washes my hair alternate days.
