Ways To Make Your Home Feel More Grown Up

Transitional Living Room, Ways To Make Your Home Feel More Grown Up

As we get older, we begin to realize that there really is no place like home. While it may be lovely to get out and see the world, there is nothing that quite rivals the comfort of our own homes. Getting to a point in your life where you have control of a space that's your own is an accomplishment in itself. And a fantastic way to embrace this is to upgrade your home into a grown up space that feels more like an adult sanctuary than a college dorm.

Look for ways to make your home more eco friendly
One of the most grown up things that anyone can do is to recognize the impact that their lifestyle has on the planet and almost all of us can do so much better. Before you start thinking about how your home will look, think about how it will function and how you can lessen any damage it is causing to the environment. Is it properly insulated, for starters? This not only makes it much more eco-friendly, but also will save you money on energy bills in the long run. Can you look at alternative sources of energy, perhaps solar panels if your home is suitable and if it isn’t, community solar solutions may be available.

Give your rooms a neutral base
Neutral colors have the unfortunate reputation of being a little bit boring. However, if used wisely, they are anything but. However, if used wisely, they are anything but. Neutrals can be a great base when used with other touches like photo prints of landscapes. In fact, color psychology suggests that neutral tones and shades are seen as sophisticated and elegant. Now, of course, if your whole home is painted in one flat neutral color, it could be a little tedious, but by playing about with visually different textures and tonal patterns as well as strategic pops of colors in your furnishings and accessories, you can create an elevated space that is both polished and grown up in a way that also projects a sense of fun and whimsy. It also means that when you are ready for a whole new look, you just have to change the accessories and not the whole room since you have a solid foundation to build upon.

Store your stuff
Clutter is something that most of us hate, but as we age and accumulate more and more things, clutter becomes almost inevitable. Of course, the ideal solution would be to get your Marie Kondo on and get rid of anything that you do not need or that does not bring you joy, but we also know that is not always practical. There are certain things that you can throw away and try to find clever solutions for what you keep. Any big items that you rarely need or use could be put into off-site storage, while pretty baskets and boxes can be used to hide away stuff in your home. Consider furniture with extra storage like beds with drawers or compartments underneath, coffee tables or ottomans with hidden storage, and so on. Periodically, go through and sort it out, but in the meantime, if you can’t see it, it will not be a problem.

We recently did a major de-cluttering of many things in our home, I generally do it twice a year. I hope you are healthy and well dear, Rowena. I am just getting back in the swing of things after a long break.
